Congratulations Jozy Altidore for a historical 2023 season, becoming (I think) the first player to have their contract bought out twice.

I'm watching the MLS Next Pro match between Seattle and KC right now (yeah yeah, sicko, etc.; it kills time before US-Mexico) and the AppleTV announcer pronouncing KC coach Benny Feilhaber's name as "File-hay-ber" is driving me up the goddamn well.

Dude played for the US in the World Cup ffs.

e: And somehow SKC2's keeper John Pulskamp saved a great opportunity from SKC2's Cam Duke while sitting in Tacoma's box and wearing a Tacoma jersey :cripes:

Rumors going around that Tata Martino will be Miami's new coach but I'd have to think after yesterday's performance FMF is furiously trying to get him to come back to Mexico. And if I were Tata I'd run as fast as possible in the opposite direction of that shitshow.

We know that the Miami coach will be whoever Messi picks, so I guess he got along well enough with Tata to like him for the spot.

It happened to Tyler Miller again! Zlatan did that to him in the first El Trafico.

Is it standard goalie practice to be that farr off the line? If I got chipped like that once, I would never come off my line again

To think I was starting to entertain the thought of Jozy coming in to replace Zardez in the preseason. Good thing the front office didn't read my mind, we'll just bed in our kids instead thank you very much.

Apparently Rooney is encouraging him to play that aggressively which, well, is a choice on both their parts.

I haven't read the article, but I'm assuming the host cities will be the same US ones as the World Cup, as basically a soft launch. Hopefully Seattle can actually play at home for their first (and likely only) game.

Not terribly surprising. I'm sure he'll land somewhere.

Total side note: While this has nothing to do with his coaching chops, I always thought Terry Dunfield was super underrated. Exactly the kind of industrious midfielder we, as hard-working Americans, are supposed to appreciate. He deserved to be on a better team in the early '10s.

At the end of a piece on how fans are complaining about MLS Season Pass, an interesting quote...

quote:

MLS sources confirmed the league is nearing Apple’s required subscription threshold that kick-starts an agreement for the company to share subscription revenue with MLS. The league’s players, per terms of the new CBA, would also receive 12.5% of the increase in media revenue this year if the amount exceeds $100 million of the 2022 media compensation, which was about $65 million when excluding fees paid to the USMNT.

The rest of this article really goes to show how having an OTA broadcast partner helped the Sounders get to where they are. The apple deal is manna from heaven to me because trying to see every Galaxy game was a cobbled mess of nonsense (especially when I was actually living in LA). But, I can see how Seattle fans got used to being able to tune into King or Kong and just being done with it (though, I think that may have been a truly unique scenario compared to the rest of the league).

I totally feel the timeslot thing, though. I'm happy with consistent times but, jesus, they don't have to be *this* consistent.

That said, I'm glad to see that pretty much everything leaking out of the operation seems to be positive. I'm sure it's got more than its fair share of bullshit behind the scenes but, it seems to be successful so far.

Oh yeah, there's an All-Star Game happening somewhat soon and I guess we need some players to actually play in it.

Garber showed amazing constraint in not using one of his two picks on Messi.

how perfectly MLS to be five years late to a trend eh

that said Arsenal have been bringing out various fashion-related non-playing kit the past few years with Adidas, so not surprising MLS may get in on the game as well.

Rumors in Brazilian press are that Suarez is trying in every way possible to join Messi in Miami.
He's been talking about retirement because his knees can't handle the Brazilian season (gremio has already played 34 games this season and has at least another 28 to go, possibly 32), but the suspicion is that its so that he'd get out of his contract, sit out the rest of the year, and join Miami in 2024. Gremio is trying to add a clause to his contract to demand compensation if he retires and then comes back before the end of his Gremio contract, but that is getting push back form Suarez (which seems like pretty good indication that the plan is true).

Huh, I didn't know Daniel Chacon (Costa Rican international, started in their WC win over Japan) was in Rapids 2. They just signed him to a pro contract and loaned him out to Alajuelense. Not bad, but being a CB at only 155 pounds is a bit worrisome, somebody get him a sandwich.

My understanding is that those OTA deals were money losers to the point that it was basically the team paying to be on air. The Apple situation works better for me anyways so I’m good with this.
