So this is neato. Got my hands on my grandfather’s service records and found this in with them

I doubt it’s a real signature but that’s still cool

e: real vs printed is what I mean. The letter is real. My grandfather was in the army and was in/near Japan when the bombs were dropped. I don’t have a lot of details but I have letters he wrote to my grandmother than heavily hint at it

I knew she wrote Jolene and I Will Always Love You in the same day and I knew a lot of her charity work was actually just giving money to people who needed money instead of setting up a non-profit tax haven that didn't actually do anything to help people like most celebrities, didn't know the Elvis story.

OMG. So let me tell you this little story. I went away for a couple of days, no biggie. I have this BedJet, which is a fan thing that blows hot or cool air into a sheet that keeps me from sweating to death at night (I'm a hot sleeper, which isn't helped by my helpful heater that likes to cross the boundary onto my side of the bed). So it's a box under the bed, a hose that runs up the side of the bed that is connected to a nozzle on top of the bed that fits into the bedsheet, right? Still with me? Anyway, I went away and when I got back, he had the BedJet running but it sounded weird. I look down and he had yanked the blankets SO HARD that he ripped the entire hose out of the BedJet box under the bed.

sup hot sleeper buddy. Probably why I don't mind so much that my wife is a bit of a blanket hog.

My favorite Dolly quote is "it costs a lot of money to look this cheap".

They offered her a judge spot on American Idol and she refused. She told Larry King that she understood there were people there in the initial auditions that had no business singing professionally, but she just couldn't be the one to crush a person's dreams.

Horror has been a super popular genre since the invention of moving pictures and violent horror has been popular since you were legally allowed to film it (and probably before). I am a little shocked there's a tenth one coming out because I thought the Chris Rock one that no one really liked was the seventh, so either they put out 2 in between that and now or there were some weird spin offs that weren't counted in the numbering until now. or I just forgot two made before the Chris Rock one.

I'm not actually a horror fan and have only seen a couple Saw films, but they are absolutely different than like a "faces of death" vhs.

I had a girlfriend once who refused to watch any horror films but would obsessively read the plot summaries of them on wikipedia.

I don’t understand this whole Barbie Movie vs Oppenheimer movie thing that’s going on. They couldn’t be more different from each other except that they release on the same day.

It has to be a joint marketing thing by the two studios right?

It's a combination of different demographic appeal and competition for the best screens in theaters because a lot of theatres have big screens for the new attraction and smaller screens for the stuff that came out a couple weeks ago. And if your movie is premiering in certain week, whether you are a director, actor, writer, producer, or anyone else listed in the credits, you probably want it on the biggest screens available

That felt like a lol meme thing, this feels like I concerted effort to get people to go see one vs the other (or both same day) but I guess it makes sense.

My favorite thing about Oppenheimer isn't that it's opening the same weekend as Barbie, but Nolan announcing its release date early enough that Tom Cruise was able to outmaneuver him & get Mission: Impossible -Dead Reckoning Part 1 released the weekend before. That means theaters are stuck debating whether to share IMAX screens for the two movies… and with M:I out first they'll likely be biased towards that film.

I think this is also a relatively new phenomena based on the "IMAX" screens available. Before COVID, especially in the middle of summer, there were lots of head to head releases, and defeintly one after the other. Plus, I don't think the Venn Diagram overlap of seeing Oppenheimer and Barbie opening weekend is as big people think it is.

Also, I never got into the Mission Impossible movies. Like, I have seen most of them but never really thought it was great outside of maybe the first one having a few iconic scenes. I will take Fast and Furious over MI any day, at least that has some self awareness.

Funny enough I'm the opposite. I love the M:I movies and completely bounced off the F&F franchise. When Cruise settled on working with McQuarrie the series became consistently good.

While I'm not the biggest J.J. Abrams fan, Philip Seymour Hoffman made Mission: Impossible 3 amazing. I'll even forgive Mission: Impossible 2 because John Woo directed it.
