I'm often the co-worker who turns in suboptimal work, for several reasons: - I have a tendency to work too fast and miss obvious errors (I am aware of this and work on this a lot) - Our legacy codebase is crap and working on the same thing for a week is exhausting and unfun, see #1 - My coworker is a self-acclaimed perfectionist who refuses to accept that sometimes, people make mistakes. They claim that they never ever make mistakes if they don't want to. (I hate this person)

God I wish that we had anything where I am right now, even useless metrics - Support is a drat mess because it's just a single guy doing whatever the gently caress he wants with no rhyme or reason. Maybe he'll spend 5 hours with someone and ignore a whole day of requests, maybe he'll close everything that day! Who knows! It's so dire that I had to help out a couple of weeks back and I got a few comments about people feeling like support was being done. He's not a bad guy, but we just can't keep a second support hire (used to be me, got a better opportunity internally and took it, and also not his fault that we can't) so it's just been whatever the gently caress for... 6 years? I dunno.

Edge pops up a "please use me" box covering up the download box when you try and get Chrome now, I think MS need hitting with the antitrust hammer again because they seem to have forgotten. Same with all Google properties showing "we work best in Chrome, download Chrome!" when you access them using any other browser. Just gently caress off.

Like, I get why SaaS and the cloud are a thing but I kind of miss when you could go to a shop, buy a product, insert the disk, install the app, and get a reasonably complete product without endless subscriptions, accounts and always-online requirements.

Every little incident of Microsoft actively making the user experience more hostile and/or commercialised on the Pro version of an operating system that I paid for sets off a "maybe I should look at desktop Linux" thought. You can take a clean Windows 11 install and if you use Edge then everything on default settings is almost indistinguishable from your parents' hosed up Windows XP PC - search bar in the taskbar, widgets popping up filled with tabloid news articles and those really cheap adverts about what celebrities look like now, shitloads of shovelware apps installed by default, another search bar in the middle of the desktop, another full page of trash tabloid news when you launch the browser. Genuinely thought MS had finally understood what people want from a PC and then it all started going wrong when the weather widget got pushed into the Windows 10 taskbar.

The Windows 11 thread seems to agree. It's full of people who are sick of Microsoft's poo poo. Personally, it doesn't really bother me and I think at least a few of the things you've mentioned are old, but I hear you. https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3971625

I can chuck a lightweight distro on a 15 year old ThinkPad and have a perfectly acceptable experience. The only place I use Windows by choice is on my gaming PC. My laptop is a second-hand M1 Macbook Pro that I got for a good price. My work laptop runs a heavily customised and optimised Win10 image that, thank god, has most of the horrendous poo poo disabled by force, and that I’m not responsible for maintaining. If Microsoft was like "okay pay us $50/year and we will give you a version that has no tracking or ads or Cortana or onedrive or Xbox or edge and you can disable any built in app permanently" I would absolutely do it

The thing that drives me insane is they were this loving close to turning their image around. WSL; VSCode; Windows Terminal. They were making things that felt great to use and got the gently caress out of your way. Then someone was like "You know what was great? Windows 8. We should do Windows 8 again and call it Windows 11. But we're going to learn from our mistakes - instead of letting everyone stay on the old version like we did with 7, we're going to loving ruin Windows 10 and make it impossible to opt out of our idiocy!"

I remember that at some point, you could upgrade to the newer Windows version, and if you didn't like it you could revert back to the previous one. Both processes were about the same difficulty. But now, one false click and boom, you're on Windows 11 now bitch. Revert? Nah you're stuck now. Here's some clickbait news on the Edge new tab page!

Windows really feels like it’s starting to collapse under the weight of decades with of bloat, half-implemented features and quick fixes. It’s a miracle it’s usable at all.

Windows 10 and 11 felt pretty good out of the box. Everything I hate about the OS is telemetry or search engine related because Microsoft keeps going through these phases where they gotta advertise poo poo to us. If it was just an OS with no other Microsoft software it'd be great.

The worst part about Windows 11 is their refusal to allow you to have text labels on your taskbar icons, or to have separate tabs/icons when you have multiple windows open for the same application. Yes I know its because they redeveloped the taskbar from the ground up blah blah blah, it's not a loving dock and I don't want to have to click an icon to get back to one of my multiple browser windows. Yes I guess it's coming but roll out faster dammit!

Definitely spent longer than I should have trying to understand how Azure route tables worked, was trying to think of it the same as as routers in the real world, where you have to tell each router where to send packets and trying to apply this to peered vnets. Turns out it's a lot simpler than I thought and you just specify the next-hop even if the next-hop is on the other side of a vnet peer, the platform works it all out for you. Should have read the docs 🙃

My boss just dropping huge loving projects into Teams chat then saying nothing, asking nothing directly of any of us, then blowing up about it when it wasnt promptly addressed. Today he just casually dropped a link to some new AWS service that would be a big lift and cost to setup in the morning, then got pissed when no one responded enthusiastically to it. Yeah sorry no one was jumping out of their seats to setup yet another unused halfbaked SIEM here, good loving god. This last big vacation ruined me temporarily. Only 25-30 more years before I can retire I guess.

Blew my mind at first looking at pcaps and seeing 12:34:56:78:9a:bc mac addresses for everything. But yeah, udrs and nsgs are rad and wasn’t too bad of a shift coming from traditional networking. A fun learning curve at least.
