I don't want to complain too much, and like, whatever, it's his IP he can take it where he wants, but Lisa Joyful made me think that maybe the developer didn't recognize what made Painful good. I am very cool on Painful rerelase.

Final Cut fully voices the entire game and it completely elevates every single part of it, and a decent amount of extra content was added as well in subsequent patches. There are political vision quests, a smattering of new events/stuff/items to check out, also a fair amount of bug fixes but I never really had a problem with bugs.

Oh fuuuuuck let's fuckinggoooo that sounds rad.

For a second I got wires crossed and thought people were discussing a fully voiced final cut of Lisa, and I physically recoiled in fear.

I liked Lisa and Everhood. Sorry if you thought it was mass murder propaganda I was having a cool time with psychedelia and beats. OMORI also very good.

The undertale like that I physically recoiled from was Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass. The content warning is probably not descriptive enough for what the game throws at you.

Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass is simultaneously impressive as a solo project and also repellent despite having a pretty simple/insanely predictable overall arc.

Also if you're thinking about LISA at all give it a shot. It doesn't come up as much in discussions about the game because it doesn't make for as good of a dialogue but it has a lot of well done comedy that shifts between goofy absurdy and pitch black gallows humor, in a way that somehow doesn't detract from its overall tone and feel. But if you've read about it online without playing it you'd get the impression that the game was just misery porn and that's simply not the case.

someone awful.

I actually believe you but I don't know if i'm strong enough to get through all the misery, however appropriate to the narrative it is. Not the game's failing at all, it's mine. It fascinates me though, I may ease into it.

What exactly do you mean by repellent? I can read that in all kinds of ways, but personally there's never been a video game ending that has left me more viscerally depressed.

Yeah, Jimmy has one of the most obviously telegraphed endings of any game ever that still somehow manages to hit you like a loving truck.

A remake/remaster with new content will be out end of this month, if you want to hold on. If not, I believe it'll be a content update for current owners.

Kind of the way you experienced it. I guessed the ending exactly correctly maybe an hour into the game and starting with that context just makes 90% of the experience fairly depressing, and combined with the genuinely creepy/gross presentation of the "corrupted" enemies/bosses in a few areas just made it viscerally unpleasant. There's a handful of really funny moments in the game but I have no idea what I was supposed to come away from the game with, where even something as miserably depressing as LISA evoked positive/uplifting feelings at the end and made me reflect.

Don't play those games if you aren't in the headspace for them. Lisa has excellent storytelling and a lot of really funny and interesting moments but it is probably the most pessimistic and cynical game I've ever played. Like it's really intense and unrelenting in showing you just how poo poo people can be in a way no other game really does.

Worth experiencing but make sure your in the headspace for that sort of game. And yeah some of the funny parts are really good. I'm still really partial to the one song that's basically just that one grunt sound effect from Shenmue played over and over again.

HA! HA! NICE! WHAT A TOOL!
For LISA sure the content is dark but theres basically no grinding. There's misery in the plot but the mechanics are really relaxed (outside of easily savescummed permadeaths). So my net experience with the game wasnt this bad time.

I thought I heard stuff about that game punishing save-scumming or just generally making saving a risky preposition even in it's "easier" mode.

That's only a thing on hard mode

Sally

Don't post Small Dash!
there is a normal mode which is standard indie rpg fare and a hard mode where save points explode after one use... and an easy mod was added which is really just five minutes of extra content of the dev mocking people asking for an easy mode in an already relatively easy game. ymmv, but i recall the easy mode being like one room hidden away in LISA The Joyful.

Hearing Slowbeef laugh gives me life.

But yeah I absolutely could not deal with the miserable atmosphere of LISA in the long term, between the world and how it constantly wears you down in the battles. If it pulled you aside more often than it already does with its "dumb potato bitch wife" moments it would begin to sabotage its own mood, but I've tried three times each to play, or even watch a playthrough of it, unsuccessfully, despite how incredible those moments are.
