So '23 had a free weekend that supposedly ended this morning.

I started playing early today and haven't been booted, guess it only checks on startup? Guess I'm never closing the game or turning off my computer again. :v:

The importance of this mission cannot be overemphasized
Going into the final matchday of the Belgian third division with Royal Liege, we have been on an incredible run to end the season 8 wins and 1 draw in our last 9 matches to haul in Jong Red (Antwerp's B-team) at the top of the table. We are one point back but at home to a midtable team with nothing to play for while Jong Red are away to a team battling for the final promotion spot.

We take a 3-0 lead in the first twenty minutes and everything is looking peachy. Go into the half still with a three goal lead, praise the players, we have been in complete control. Jong Red are drawing at half time too, so it's on lads, it's loving on!

Our opponent pulls one back on 58 minutes to make it 3-1. At around 70 minutes I notice several of our players are showing 'nervous' or 'overwhelmed by the occasion' in their status. We haven't had a single highlight since half time. I make some subs, put on some more confident players, try and gee the team up from the touchline. Decide to sit a bit deeper, timewaste, don't play on the counter.

84 minutes they make it 3-2 from an absolute worldie 30 yard screamer. 89 minutes they equalise via a long ball over the top of our (supposedly sitting deep) defence. gently caress it, in for a penny in for a pound, I go all out attack trying to get a winner, maximum Allardyce get it in the loving box lads. 90+3 minutes, we give away a penalty from a push on a free kick taken from the centre circle. We lose 4-3.

gently caress

Good news is Jong Red won anyway in the end so it didn't matter. Also good news is I have isolated three or four absolute bottlers who are getting booted out in the summer despite our highly successful promotion season. Get the gently caress out of my club you wet blouses.

Working my way up the leagues with FGR in FM21 (again.) Just absolutely gubbed the #2 team in the league (Rotherham) 6-0, right after beating them 4-0 in the FA Cup 3rd round.

Might as well disband the club after conceding ten goals to a newly-promoted side without reply in the course of a few days.

I'm in the third season in the top flight of my Celtic Nations Database. We just cannot break through into European places. Last season I was two points outside them. The big problem is money. Despite getting around €7m a year from TV rights it's just not enough to compete with the top Scottish and former English Leagues Welsh sides. The numbers they're pulling through the gates and their sponsorship means we'll always be behind them. On top of that I feel like I can't improve the team. We've hit the cap on the kind of players I can attract and pay. And while a season getting through to Conference League group stages might help the bank balance and repuation a little, I fear it'll tax the squad over the course of a season, so it wouldn't be a year-on-year thing. I've scouted out some good kids, but even then they're not developing right. And I'm not able to get them to the level where they can really slot into the team. I feel like my only real option is a slow grind over multiple seasons of saving cash to do club improvements, improve the training grounds, improve the youth systems, etc. And even that's not a guarantee. It feels like we've "found our level."

I sympathise with you very much. Some teams are just inherently so much more privileged than others, and nothing can be done about it. International football and MLB are the two most unequal sports on the planet, and one thing I appreciate about the NHL/Franchise Hockey Manager games is that everyone has the same salary cap and salary floor. Some teams make more money and can have better facilities, but the most important thing, player pay, is equal for all. Let me tell you about one OotP playthrough that features an expansion franchise in a market of only about 1.25 million. Managed to make the playoffs in the third and fourth seasons, which is excellent for a new team in a small market, and attendance has been basically all sell-outs for several years. Fan interest has been off the charts for several seasons now due to the success. However, there's been no budget increase - in fact, there was a slight cut season before last despite making more money - in several years. Partly it's because these games have virtual owners who decide on a whim how much profit to keep for their own pockets (made 15 million in playoff revenue the last two years, still a slight budget cut), but part of it is just market size. He can consistently put out a competitive team and he will never have the same resources as the Yankees or Dodgers even if the latter are dreadful. The Tampa Bay Rays are having a near-historic season this year while being in literally the strongest 5-team division in baseball history (based on Win%), but most likely they will lose all of their best players within a year or two when they start asking for big money. There's a reason that the Yankees have won so many WS titles over the years and it's not because pinstripes look sexy.

That said, If you think that you can do the slow grind approach, I suggest that you try it. I think that it would be very gratifying if you get to the point where you can compete with the megabastards. Perhaps newer versions of FM are more strict, but if someone can take Wrexham from conference to being a European megabastard, maybe you can too.

Interesting to see that FM25 will shift the game over to Unity (as per Miles' dev update).
Also interesting to see that they shat the bed with the new features for FM23, which is why there were so few big improvements.

The comment he makes about a live service model doesn't really get expanded on, though.

Seems like the big thing, for now anyway, is better graphics. It’ll be nice to get better newgen faces but I think there’s a poo poo ton of other stuff they should be prioritizing. The core of the game is transfers and tactics. Make those things more
dynamic, more lifelike and the game is already better. Right now negotiating a transfer is the most boring, scientific thing ever.

The worst problem with annual sport games is that they are annual. So many would benefit from a year off to refine things, but they have to keep the money spin going with marginal upgrades (that frequently prove to be marginal downgrades).

I subscribe to Apple Arcade to play FM on my phone. I assume they’re seeing very high retention there and that has them thinking they could just cut out the middleman and do the exact same thing on other platforms.

To be honest I’d love if they went one step further and made this one of those cloud games. This is exactly the kind of game that benefits from having a superpowerful cloud computer do all the work. Then everyone can load a bazillion leagues and they could maybe do far more complicated backend stuff that they presumably can’t do now because the game already runs like crap. That’d be worth subscribing to.

Games as a product don't make enough millions. They need people to pay them fees every month for life, kind of like how they are getting rid of actual home ownership in favour of a feudal system where one pays rent to megacorps forever. This is called freedom (somehow)

Zealand floated the GAAS idea a while back, saying how great it would be, and every youtuber/twitch streamer/general creator with an ounce of fortitude pointed out the multitude of reasons it'd be horrific for the customer. So of course they're going to do it. And Zealand will be smug about it.

There's an interview with Eurogamer where Miles says that they looked at GAAS and a bunch of other models but decided not to do anything for now.
He explicitly mentions those players who buy the game every other year in that interview. So I don't think it's a leap to think that SI aren't sure they've quite got the market to justify going live service.

Eric the Mauve

Does SI have the capability to actually prevent people who own older versions from playing them? They can (and do) delist them every year but as far as I know that doesn't prevent people from playing them.

Because if not, whatever is the last version of FM before it goes monthly subscription will be getting regular database updates forever, somewhere where you'll have to torrent them because SI will be aggressively attacking any site that hosts them.

Stotty

They've tried the online thing a couple of times with FM online and FM Live, albeit I think they were MMO types.

The amount of people who pick up the game casually, play it as a second screen game or play it on a laptop whilst travelling probably make GAAS a bit unappealing.

I bought my first copy in 96/97 season and bought every season up to FM 2020. I've started to skip seasons now, a subscription model would absolutely kill any interest in it.

It's incredibly annoying not being able to play your single player game because Auth servers are busy or being Ddos attacked.

For the most part I don't even care about the database updates, last save I started I holidayed 20 years then picked up from there to get rid of the existing players. It was incredibly fun to go in with absolutely no knowledge of the game world.

I don't know if the system has changed, but the fake players thing just used to give them fake names rather than generate new players. It was easy to tell who was who.

Plus with holidaying you get all the weird little quirks of nations becoming powerful or big clubs going in to freefall or something.

I generally always start in the lowest tier in England anyway so it probably doesn't make all that much difference, to be perfectly honest.

However, I want to resign. And there's an international window coming up that I should resign before. But I can't bring myself to load up the game and click the button. This is nothing like the real world, where I'm struggling with actually abandoning a real life team. This is me, simply, saying in a game, I am not having fun and I can't make the team succeed.
