All good sci-fi is more about philosophy than technobabble, and Alpha Centauri is exceptionally good with painting the philosophical differences between the faction leaders and making them actually mechanically relevant to gameplay in ways that hasn't been done since. It's just such good writing and design!

As much as I hate Miriam as a faction leader, her speeches in the later stages of the game really paint a picture of how hosed up the world is getting. The game makes a really compelling case for how the other leaders like Deirdre and Zhakarov are actually pretty sinister when you think about it. Yang sort of obfuscates this, and the game mechanics let him spam colonies a lot, but none of the factions in SMAC are really what you'd want to live in.

SMAC is one of the best games of all time. The writing is superb, and the secret project cinematics can be chilling as hell.

my hot take is that SMAC is fine but it mostly exists because we have 20+ years of hindsight on top of extremely obscure trends at the time. however i hold onto this hot take because: it makes annoying people really mad

It angers me that they haven't just remade that and Master of Magic. Update the graphics and interface and give them a decent AI, and change nothing else.

There have been almost 3 official remakes for MoM in the last few years. They weren't impressive though.
One is basically a balance and AI mod.
One is a widescreen patch with some minor interface changes for the mod.
One is a hex based remake. It lacks soul, just like the Alpha Centauri remake from a few years back.

Civilization: Beyond Earth goes in one of those "This isn't what we wanted" categories like Duke Nukem Forever or Fallout 76.

I wouldn't go that far. Beyond Earth is... fine. It's alright, a decent enough sci-fi spinoff of Civilization V, and the alignment system wasn't that bad. Fun enough to go back to every once in awhile, but not fun enough to take up permanent space on a hard drive. It's just that what people wanted was Alpha Centauri 2.0. It definitely wasn't as bad as Fallout 76 or DNF.

Now with less breakage.

Civ:BE would have been a perfectly fine game in a world where Alpha Centauri didn't exist, agreed. But it's hard to get out of that shadow, even if that's unfair to a game that never claimed to be AC:2.

I thought Civ:BE implied to be AC:2 until release, and then back-pedalled once reviews made unfavourable comparisons.
Kinda like with Stardock's Elemental and MoM.

We haven't had that spirit here since 1969.

For all the Alpha Centauri fans coming out of the woodwork, the blog series Paean to SMAC is a wonderful in-depth discussion of basically every quote in the game. (You'll want to read it in order, but it does the usual blog thing of showing the most recent entry first, so start at the discussion of the intro video and use the link to the next entry at the bottom of each page.)

This is excellent, thanks. Do spot Brian Reynolds giving his own commentary under some of the posts! Apparently he likes Morgan's "chew and eat our fill" quote best and feels he could've still improved the blurb somewhat.

It’s really impressive how responsive those later versions of Mac OS are. Granted, I’m running 9 on a G4 MDD so it’s sort of like putting a Ferrari engine in a Toyota… Either way, I love it.

I'm glad you took it off our hands, big boss is always bringing in some ancient unsellable Apple equipment. You'll get more mileage out of it then we will. Should be fun to mess with, hope you'll share the deets, whatever you do with it. :coffeepal:

Heads up, by the way, that G3 is a tray-loading model and doesn't have the USB mass storage update, so you'll have to burn a cd with it on there if you really want to get cranking on that.

[Edit] Just realized you took the one in the back, not the front. I have no idea which version that one was.

if the existing code does the job well enough, and it's less effort to run an emulator, run the emulator.

IBM was on that plan since like the 60s and it worked well enough for them until they decided to stop actually selling computers.

There's one near me where you can look into the projection booth from the lobby but I can't spot the Palm from pictures online. It's a gigantic wraparound dome screen that mostly shows nature documentaries and concert films though so they're maybe not super in line with more conventional Imax cinema setups (and/or they're so outdated they just predate the Palm entirely, last overhaul I heard about was in 1999).

They do a thing pre-show where they jack up the lights behind the screen so you can see through it to all the speakers and it's a great way to check whether you have just a touch of megalophobia.
