Speaking of dinosaur extinction / the impact I have to come back to this Ramirez. Skios posted:Michael Ramirez I'm trying really hard to piece this one together but I'm just having trouble. Firstly, "national debt" is not a discrete event, it's just like... a thing? A thing that exists and continues to exist and is just something we live with. So why is the comet labeled national debt? This is like drawing an explosion and labelling it "money" But anyway, we know that the comet hit the earth and is widely attributed to the extinction of the dinosaurs. So in this comic, the dinosaurs erroneously think it missed them. So... so they represent stupid liberals who thought the national debt wasn't going to happen, but in fact the national debt did happen and it finished them off? What??? I seem to recall from a book I read recently (The Ends of the Earth) that the current going theory is that the comet impact did a lot of damage on the day yes but the real long term damage was the volcanism on the opposite side of the planet, triggered by the impact, which basically C02ed the gently caress out of the atmosphere over many many years (millenia) So, ignoring the connection and going with the simplification "Actually the volcanoes did it", then: the national debt did 'happen' but wasn't enough to finish everyone off (ok, I can call that semi-accurate but it's not going to cause damage) but default is still in the wings waiting to happen and will finish everyone off of it does (ok I'll allow that too). So where does the debt celling come into this? Does this mean allowing more comets will delay the volcanoes? It better not!! I'll cut you!!!

Oh right! I genuinely thought that was supposed to be a simmering volcano. So the default (which didn't happen) missed them and harmlessly splattered into the ground doing nothing, and national debt is the true threat. That might be even worse.

The neat thing about affirmative action is that there are far more people qualified for any given position than there are applicants, and the idea of an exceptional few who outshine the rest is complete bullshit. So not only is it necessary to correct ingrained biases, it will absolutely not hurt us to do so.

It happens, before he became a cartoonist Scott Adams was pulled aside by multiple bosses and HR directors and told he would never get promoted because he is a white male and the company is racist and sexist and heterophobic, and then they laughed and said telling white men this to their face is the best part of the policy because no one will believe this conversion happened and he will have no evidence if he tries to sue.

Nah, it was because he was publicly making statements of policy without the authorization of the President, and many think he was trying to provoke direct war with China. Harry S. Truman posted:I fired him because he wouldn't respect the authority of the President. I didn't fire him because he was a dumb son of a bitch, although he was, but that's not against the law for generals. If it was, half to three-quarters of them would be in jail.

Pants Donkey posted:Wasn’t MacArthur fired because he wanted to nuke Korea or something similarly unhinged? Sort of, officially MacArthur was "relieved from duty" because the president wanted to and held the authority to do so as commander in chief, with it unofficially being "he's insubordinate, but we can't publicly say that because it's a military charge and he'd demand a court martial that he might have actually won. He also wanted to start a nuclear war with China during the Korean war, yes but that kinda a different issue altogether . From an interview that didn't actually get publicly released until after his death quote:Of all the campaigns of my life, 20 major ones to be exact, [Korea was] the one I felt most sure of was the one I was deprived of waging. I could have won the war in Korea in a maximum of 10 days.... I would have dropped between 30 and 50 atomic bombs on his air bases and other depots strung across the neck of Manchuria.... It was my plan as our amphibious forces moved south to spread behind us—from the Sea of Japan to the Yellow Sea—a belt of radioactive cobalt. It could have been spread from wagons, carts, trucks and planes.... For at least 60 years there could have been no land invasion of Korea from the north. The enemy could not have marched across that radiated belt.

Yeah, it wasn’t until after the war that MacArthur made public his plan to nuke Korea and make parts of it completely uninhabitable. https://warfarehistorynetwork.com/d...%20the%20USSR). MacArthur’s main problem was that he kept expanding the targets he wanted to bomb despite repeated warnings from the White House to cut it out lest he drag the Soviet Union into the war, to which MacArthur tried to say “gently caress you I do what I want” until the President called him home to fire him.
