RyokoTK posted:when will the west learn how to make good games like metroid prime and donkey kong country Western AAA stuff gets really frustrating sometimes. So many games get pulled in like 6 different perverse-incentive directions with demands to be infinitely profitable, hugely time-consuming, as accessible and appealing as possible, and also as self-serious as they can be so they'll be respected enough for a movie or TV adaption into a cross-media empire. And then finally, finally video games will be appreciated as a mature art medium for adults.

I generally don't play them, which people can lol at if they want, is it true that there are games that just constantly overlay your next objective on screen all the time?

I thought Ubisoft is what really started the checklist objective UI vomit. Naughty Dog is actually comparatively restrained there. E. Maybe Skyrim if you go all the way back but at least you only could track one quest at a time IIRC

Yes lol it's so fail. Sometimes you can disable a bunch of that stuff but also the games are designed with that in mind so it won't actually tell you organically how to get somewhere so you have no real choice but to use the compass markers/hud stuff. Thinking of something like a Bethesda game, I really struggle to think if a time an NPC told me to go to Spooky Witch Cave and actually told me where Spooky Witch Cave is ie 'oh it's not far outside Martintown' and then a bunch of ingame road signs can point you to Martintown. It's so loving bad I still play a bunch of western games though. Cucked by big map marker

there are good western games they are simply just indie/mid-budget games, or games made by some company from Sweden or Estonia which entirely takes place on a map screen

Playing games that are proudly Assassin's Creed and/or Farcry mods and then being surprised that they're poo poo is entirely a problem is the customer's own making.

In Skyrim the quest marker points to the entrance of the dungeon but it doesn't actually tell you how to get there. If you just walk in a straight line there could be a mountain in the way and then you have to find a way around and it's a whole adventure. My very first game I got Lydia killed walking from Skyrim to Morthal because we tried to go through a pass and oh whoops there's a dragon lair. Also my horse fell off a cliff
