Basically all the consumer exploitation poo poo got create by PC developers in the 90s. Started as extra add-ons to drive sales, then when you got a dedicated consumer base it turned into a way to squeeze more money out of your paypigs. As always consoles were just playing catch-up to pc gamers.

I would check off locations as I explored them so I didn't revisit unless needed to or for new loot. I still have my earthbound guid although it needs to be rebound.

I think Ocarina of Time was the first strategy guide I got. Definitely the most memorable one for me. The other one would be Xenogears, but only because I would leaf through it at the book store for the pictures of cool robots. Edit: Oh wait, yeah I got the Fallout 2 guide too. The Bladur's Gate 1 didn't make sense to me as a kid because the whole loving thing was written from like a first person perspective as a journal entry? Some hosed up creative writing poo poo.

yeah the guides were good, I think the last one I ever got was maybe for New Vegas, and I mean that was well past when you could find stuff online but having it there in a book was so handy I remember having all the Rusel DiMaria books for NES because you just couldn't beat poo poo without them, like good loving luck figuring out Castlevania 2 or something

Did they keep the whole "Halflings reroll all 1's" thing from tabletop 5e in Baldurs Gate 3? If so its gonna be real hard for me to convince myself not to play a Halfling. Probably a Bard.

In tabletop, my brother literally won't play anything but halflings anymore. He's played since '89 and has lost so many characters to 1's on saves that he's traumatized, lol.
