Still getting into freelancer and the mode seems very straightforward so long as it a) doesn't bug out and b) you don't allow the money objectives to steer you into terrible decisions. I found the first sniper rifle I could afford to buy was the Arctic Druzhina 34. I've taken this as a sign that I should finish Strelok ASAP (by the ultrapro method of knocking out most targets and "sniping" them point-blank). Regardless, getting all challenges is going to be one helluva grind.

Question: how do these DLC weapon sets interact with the freelancer mechanics? They have slots on the wall, so I assume they can be lost and despawned by prestiging...does this mean that if I don't buy the DLC, I'm effectively reducing the number of weapons to collect for each prestige?

FYI - Cat Burglar takes a surprising amount of time to get. It requires that you open 100 safes, but remember that you'll never have more than 1 safe per map, and frequently not even one. It takes a lot of grinding, so try for as many safes as possible if you're going for 100%.

This does not make sense when, again, aggregate indicia also indicate improvements. The belief that things are worse is false. It remains false.

Correct. If you own it, you need it to prestige.

That's...that's goddamn critical. It's a massive time savings on prestiging to not have an extra what, 12? items to grind, 10 times.

Nakar posted:

The best thing about Strelok is finally finishing it and never using a Druzhina again.

That's exactly why I'm starting with it! I'm going to begin with all the worst challenges so that most of the massively overlong freelancer completion marathon is as freeform as possible.

Thanks for the tip; I can tell there's a whole panoply of grind waiting for me in the safehouse. I'm still taking it nice and slow to minimize my frustration and give IoI a chance to patch things. This could take years.

The other ones to pay attention to are the "kill syndicate leader by X method." That's probably more obnoxious, since you only get 4 leaders per campaign. Those will probably be faster to just restart your campaign after the first syndicate however many times, since it's only 2 maps and then an easy showdown.

My only real aims regarding challenges right now are going after the "kill 50 targets in each location" ones. I'm only missing Paris, Berlin (because I often use them for showdowns), Colorado and Mumbai (because of course, lol). I don't think I have the patience for a lot of the remaining ones.

With the fuel canister I found it awkward to drag three people into the puddle and set them all alight. For that Burning Man challenge I just settled for two at a time. That usually works out with syndicates anyway, if you take down the leader without getting noticed and then lure two (sometimes three) suspects with the burner to a private area.

Just remember: the way to ignite a puddle is to shoot at an object in it. Not the burner phone, just drop a pistol and create some sparks.

The two that seem really obnoxious to me are "Kill 25 Leaders with necklaces using the fiberwire" and "Kill 47 Leaders with the katana" - note that the Tanto does not count for the latter. I have a handful of other challenges I'm trying to finish off, but I doubt I'll ever seriously pursue the leader kill ones.

I'm pretty sure that specific challenge counts both members and leaders. Either way, it's much easier than the Strelok challenge since all guard disguises can carry the katana in their hands or on their back without alerting anybody. And since the May patch you can put the blade back in a suitcase again.

The only kill list challenge I have left apart from the giant "kill several thousand people for Diana's amusement" and "kill a hundred dudes Diana swears are up to no good" ones is to kill Syndicate Leaders with natural poisons. The natural poison you can craft at the safehouse doesn't count for some reason, so you have to make sure your showdown is on one of only a few specific maps, plus the leader has to be either a foodie or dehydrated. I think I'm currently on 7/10 due to slowing down on how much Hitman I've been playing.

The worst challenge is killing Leaders by pushing because every other push kill objective lets you KO them first but not that one for some reason? Meaning you need to identify the leader and engineer a situation where you can safely push kill them while conscious.

Good: haven, whittledon, mendoza if using the on map poison maker works which I haven't tested
Fine I guess: ambrose, you can suit only the frog if you're very careful or a little lucky but I don't like it especially for showdowns because it's Better Colombia which means it's bad

Haven's a VERY easy poison kill unless they do their tell in the villa, in which case it's not bad unless you have an incompatible prestige objective; waiter can go everywhere except the villa and villa staff disguise exists

E: I think there's also a frog in actual Colombia but lol nah

I saved that one for when I could pick Dubai or Paris for a showdown, bringing along a fiber-wire for if it went bad. I identified the leader, waited for a meeting and then dealed with the other suspect to get their burner phone. Lured the leader to a specific location: the balcony at the end of maintenance staff corridor in Dubai or the small room of the Sheik's apartment in Paris. Both remote locations where you can deal with assassin bodyguards while they are walking towards it. It's a good idea to find a coin or some other distraction tho, so you can have multiple attempts if the burner placement didn't give you the prompt to push.

I've actually had a bit of luck with that one because it's right by the bridge of the construction yard, and you can get in there pretty easily by scoring the mansion guard outfit from the cutscene murder and shooting the rope to make a log bridge, at which point you basically have direct access to Delgado's mansion as well as the Cocaine fields, or if you're lucky you can head back into town and the leader goes up the stairs to drink from the wine on the balcony. Jam a frog in there and you're good to go, all frog butt sticking out and spindly little legs windmilling like mad as the leader goes to take a drink.

What's the criteria for targets trying to escape on non-alerted, non-showdown missions? I just finished my first successful run and for the majority of my experience playing Freelancer I assumed that you can just rampage on any mission that's not a showdown... until I did that in Dubai and had a target start escaping even though it wasn't alerted or a showdown

Are you sure it wasn't a showdown? I've done some truly egregious poo poo and had targets run away, but they always come back eventually. On a showdown, though, they'll bolt and be gone for good.

I'm completely sure it wasn't a showdown or alerted. It's only happened to me once and it really caught me off guard. I panicked and got killed so I'm not sure 100% exactly what happened, but it was exactly like a showdown escape -- I got a message, the target got surrounded by bodyguards and started leaving the area he was staying in (presumably towards an exit, but I can't guarantee that). I got killed by the target's bodyguards. The target was red on instinct, not purple, so it was definitely not a showdown.

E: it looks like maybe they wouldn't have left the map and would have just fled to a safe location on the map?

There is a specific icon for targets fleeing the map. If you don't see that, they're just being relocated to a safe zone. Most NPCs are incapable of fleeing the map entirely, only a handful of main mission targets and Showdown Suspects. Unless the target just happened to be a character who can escape the map normally, they shouldn't actually leave.

In general, any target that goes into lockdown should be given a very wide berth. Don't even get close to them or you're likely to be telepathically compromised by their guards. They may or may not immediately turn on you, but you'll end up spotted for no good reason. I've been one floor down inside the Caruso mansion and gotten compromised by some bodyguards escorting a target across the back porch area near the kitchen, it's hosed.

Generally I feel like they didn't plan enough rewards for stuff like hardcore mode and the prestige levels. There needed to be special suits and/or weapons that you can unlock by doing that stuff, I really don't think anyone gives a poo poo about trophies.
