Got a lot more done on the traitor guard, just the leader and specialist guns to go. I didn't think these 3 looked very good until I got to the very last step, adding the grime and gore and I think that really tied it together in the end. I want to sell from tabletop distance that these guys are being run ragged following the Emperor's Children around without a break until they can't go on any longer.

So, aside from one off buys like my Imperial Fist contrast paint, I have a starting set of Vallejo Game Color. That shouldn't be...terrible, right? I'm trying to apply the black to white undercoated bolt guns and it's going on like a glaze? I applied some water to the paint, and it's a wet palate, did I maybe just apply way too much water?

It's so thin it looks like a homemade contrast paint over the white. In fact it looks quite a lot like the speeder painter grey I applied on some earlier guns.

VGC (and Vallejo Mecha) are intentionally thinner paints, especially if you're used to VMC or Citadel. They need relatively little thinning for base coats, and are formulated to be easier to use as airbrush paint or glazed.

Also my paint bottles showed up today, I managed to fill 10 with uh... medium mess. I thought they'd come with pippetes and instead came with funnels and some of this paint is thick as poo poo!

That would be VGA (Vallejo Game Air) and Vallejo Model Air! VGC is as normal as any other acrylic hobby paint.

The Air lines are even thinner. Those are aimed at people who want a readymade airbrush paint, and you do still need to dilute Mecha and VGC for an airbrush, just a bit less.

Oh god it's the Clone Saga all over again.
I don't know if it'll be different since they changed them but my bottle of VGC black is pretty noticeably thin yeah, even compared to a lot of the other colours I have; i just thin it waaay less than i would normally. I don't really worry too much about the coverage or anything either cause I go over it with a grey-black anyway.

Strip the primer back off and redo the primer is about the only option. What you use to do that is going to depend on who you ask and what country you live in, americans swear by simple green or LAs totally awesome, neither of which you can easily get where I live, so I swear by metholated spirits/denatured alchohol (or Isopropyl if thats easier to get for you.). Dunk in, wait a while, scrub gently with toothbrush, repeat til clean.

Best advice, I work with my hands and shaking paints was killing any motivation I had to paint, my hands hurt enough as it is gripping brushes and building models. Being able to zip a paint pot to normal in seconds is a godsend.

contrast medium is completely unavailable in the United States. not in any LGS, not on Amazon or eBay for any reasonable price or shipping. there’s a listing for $49.99 on eBay for a pot right now.
is there any other “we have contrast medium at home” type of product I can use to turn contrasts into a glaze that will tint a surface a little better rather than running into cracks? lahmian medium kinda does the opposite of what I want.

Sounds like you want Vallejo glaze medium. It's my go-to thinning medium when I need something more than water. Or you can try their Xpress paint medium, but I can't guarantee that's going to get you the result you want as I haven't tried mixing it with contrast paints.

I drybrush and wash over Agrellan earth crackle paint regularly.

Only caveat I would say is to be gentle with it as the flakes can come right off if you stab at it too hard.

Heya mini thread! As I near middle age I’ve been hearing the call of painting again - have been playing with an airbrush to do gunpla but am super inspired by all your great work and also amazing painters on tiktok who are talented professionals and I will never be that good so should stop torturing myself

Anyway, I’d like to get a set of interesting figures to practise on, some guys with some cool details but not too fiddly and definitely not as expensive as GW stuff. Long shot but does anything stand out as a fun thing to paint without a scary commitment? More interested in the robot / weird bug side of thing than people if that helps.

I had really good luck finding sprues from larger sets on Ebay so that I could try out 5 figures from a range instead of staring down a box of 20-30.

Stargrave has a bunch of sci-fi figures under the "Mercenaries," "Crew" and "Troopers" headings that have options to make humanoid aliens and humanoid robots. I can vouch for the sculpts being easy to paint and very Star Trekish. Assembly consists of slapping arms and a head on a body with some super glue, and the material is soft enough you can easily cut to adjust or make fun alterations. They end up looking far better than the studio paint jobs suggest they would.

Wargames Atlantic is also decent, although the quality isn't as high. Expect softer details and more cluttered minis where the level of detail doesn't really match with what the sculptor was trying to do.

Mantic makes hard plastic figures that are really inconsistent. I started with them because they were cheap but I'm a much happier painter having left them behind. The Enforcers (space marine looking dudes) in particular have lots of soft details that make them particularly hard for new/returning painters to deal with. I can make them look good but oh god do I not want to ever do so again. The dwarves were okay. I painted their fantasy rats and they were a horror show, so I wouldn't recommend their space rats.

You can also get GW figures cheaply on Ebay, particularly the stuff that's old or that comes in starter boxes since people are always trying to ditch the stuff they aren't using. If you're just looking to relearn skills, painting a few push-fit marines may be a lot more pleasant than playing what-is-that-lump-supposed-to-be on a Mantic mini.

I think they are supposed to be tights but I just had to get some ork thighs out. I kept getting drops of other colours on and had to go over it again and again and I think it looks over done now..

On the other hand I think I finally got the hang of watering this paint down with the purple it's nice and smooth.

Should be fine, a layer of Pledge seems to help and I just want have spots of cracked ground as part of my desert bases. I picked up some Vallejo Dark Sand and Pale Sand so I look forward to getting some filler to make dunes and drybrushing that on.

On a whim, I hopped on eBay and grabbed a bottle of this to try it out, and also wound up grabbing some of the Duncan Rhodes Two Thin Coats paints (specifically, the three blues--Elysium, Celestial and Marine, as I want to eventually paint up some Crimson Fists and maybe some Ultramarines and/or one of their successor chapters). I'm looking forward to trying them out when they get here, and if I like these I plan on grabbing some others.

Hey goons,

I'm slowly teaching myself how to paint and in pursuit of that goal I signed up for a "How to speed paint" class at the US Open Tacoma next weekend. I'm wondering what I should do to prepare or what I should bring? Should I bring some of my underpainted, slapchop miniatures in a squad? I'm probably going to bring my whole little hobby tote so I'll have my things (I live local) but I don't really know how to prepare? Excited to do some fun stuff though.

As an aside, I want to plug this hobby tote, I saw one in use at work and figured out they come from Harbor Freight and it's my favorite organization gear for modelling and painting stuff.

I present, the hobby tower toolbox:
https://www.harborfreight.com/tool-storage-organization/parts-storage/organizers/toolbox-organizer-with-4-drawers-68238.html

19.99$ with 4 slide out little tackle boxes with divider inserts and a big storage on the top part. Makes my hobby space stay a little smaller, at least until I take over the kitchen table for a weekend.

Oh neat, I was just starting to think about getting something better than a drawer off to the side of my desk to keep my paints and tools in, I'm gonna grab one of these thanks.

Some hobby progress, got the sniper done for the traitor guard team. Had a lot of fun free handing the camo, this was the model that really got me thinking about one day doing up a traitor guard combat patrol or something to run as regular militarum.

Hey I just wanted to thank everyone who posts in this thread, I’m pretty new to miniature painting and so far I’ve had a blast researching and buying all the gear I could get my hands on, but was having issues starting painting because I have no artistic background, can’t draw or paint for poo poo and had a lot of the resin minis I printed just sitting in a pile because I was worried about having no knowledge of color schemes etc. You guys inspired me to just start throwing some paint on these loving things and seeing where it goes and I’ve had much more fun the past month or so actually finishing some stuff. I’ll post some of the things I’ve finished up so I can get advice on improving, but yeah, this thread is great and just thanks for the inspiration.

Good for you, realizing you can do whatever you want is the most freeing thing you can do when painting minis. If you don't like a particular result, gently caress it, paint it over or strip it and try again, or just move on to the next. You'll improve either way :v:

Utility is seven-eighths Proximity.

Painting miniatures is a bit like paint-by-numbers in that it immediately lets you skip the hurdle of being able to sculpt/paint shapes that actually look like the thing you want, and lets you focus on things like brush control and colour theory. The first comes with practice, and the second one is easy to pick up just by reading a few guides, and looking at existing figures and thinking "hmm why does that look good?"
