Lammasu posted:What the gently caress do they serve in a Russian restaurant? Like what is Russian food? imperial cuisine as usual incorporates good poo poo from former and current holdings - be it caucasian shashlik and khachapuri, siberian pelmeni, belarus potato draniki etc or salads with criminal amount of mayo personally the only 100% russian cuisine I tolerate is various freshwater fish (pike cutlets especially), cold soups and various pickles

Tiny Timbs posted:what the gently caress is up with expats lol So take the Old World Problem, whether it's a legit grievance or some bullshit (or a mix of the two). Now take yourself out of it entirely almost, till it's something gramps and gram deal (dealt) with if that. Now through just hearing it in myth form from older gens, or through other fourth party sources like the internet, and the Old World Problem becomes a saturday morning cartoon, and you act like a nine year old star wars fan about it, instead of a grown rear end adult familiar with something ugly, tragic, and complicated. tldr: distance in both time and space turns something from The Wire to Blue Bloods in certain expat/diaspora heads.

Often the homeland of a diaspora starts to exist in a nostalgic past only. You get this funny cognitive dissonance where you're a proud ______n and your old home country can do no wrong, but you wouldn't move back even if someone paid you. According to local papers she's lived there for 20 years, judging by the name she's married to a German and she doesn't look old enough to have moved out of Russia on her own, so Russia probably exists to her only as the place where Gramma lives. Lammasu posted:What the gently caress do they serve in a Russian restaurant? Like what is Russian food? Meat, potatoes, rye, butter, sour cream, dill, fish. It's pretty good, actually. Our local Russian restaurants were subjected to a lot of harassment after the full-scale invasion started, but it seems to have stopped since the authorities asked people to knock it off.

Russian Cuisine is pretty good actually because it's mostly just slight variations of Eastern European, Caucasus, Central Asian, etc dishes. Dumplings, hearty soups, shashlik, mayo-based salads, smoked fish, lots and lots of sour cream, etc.

On Ukraines Counter attack, it is not the time to fret, in bakhmut the vdv is lacking any strategic reserve, all of Russia's current manpower in combat power is on the front lines. So that means there is no ability for them to reallocate troops from one area to another depending on what Ukraine does. They are literally where they are stuck forever with no possibility of reserve status temporarily to recuperate troops. They are going to sit and die in their trenches as well as the cities that they occupy and. The big thing I talk about with the vdv is the fact that they have no strategic reserve. That is a major major issue for them, as it means there's nobody to allow them to conduct combat operations. So earlier in the week I stated that I thought a vdv surrendering might capitulate the war effort. It seems like that is ever more true as they are unable to leave Bakhmut without orders. And I highly doubt the command structure is going to order them to retreat at this time. Things are really grim at this point for Russia. The ISW just stated that Russia lacks combat ready reserves and is not doing rotations so that's the source on that. So really truthfully they are on their absolute last legs, I mean I don't know that they're going to survive the next 6 months let alone the next year. Even if Ukraine captures 5 km a day we're talking 150 km a month, and that's assuming that Russia doesn't have any mass encirclements that cause large troop failures, because if the units do degradate there is no replacing or filling up those gaps. I'm very worried that the Russian government will now institute general / Mass mobilization as they have literally no other chance to plug these holes other than just abduct people off the streets of Moscow. It feels like with this newest development the calamity is about to occur. Prigohzins efforts were in vain but that doesn't mean the next guy isn't going to be a lot closer to power than he was.
