I am a spectacularly bad poster and everyone in the Schadenfreude thread hates my guts.
I'm sure there are fakes but evidently they're not indistinguishable from the real thing or else the insane market for old figs like this wouldn't exist. I find it weird that apparently it isn't possible or cost-efficient at least to make a little side business this way, but then I know gently caress all about the process and thinking about it for a few seconds I guess it requires a lot of expensive machinery, moulds and specialised knowledge of materials and printing.

The majority of knock-off bootlegs do one of two things right -- they either use original Lego parts, or they print using pad printing processes, but not both. Doing both is the secret to something that looks like an actual Lego product, but the majority of the places who do bootlegs either skimp out and use cheaper Chinese plastic parts (so the figures don't feel quite right, and don't have the same luster under light as Lego bricks) or they'll use actual bricks but then do something like silkscreening onto the bricks and it just doesn't come together right. Pad printing has a HUGE initial start-up cost, so it's absolutely not worth it for anything that isn't to scale, and flooding the market with knock-offs of rare figures is a bad idea in general, so it just doesn't tend to happen.

To my knowledge, there's only two or three groups that are doing actual pad printing onto actual Lego bricks: Citizen Brick out of Chicago does it, and Firestar Toys out of the UK do it, but they use their powers to create in-demand customs rather than bootleg knock-offs. I actually have huge respect for Firestar specifically -- their stuff is more expensive, but if you need a Lego flesh head that isn't a white dude, they're the only ones who actually have a good selection to choose from.

Rakuten has 15% for non-exclusive right now. That plus the 5% VIP is a decent cash back. OTOH, the sets you can do this with will sell for 20% off on the other sites pretty regularly. And that's 20% off, not 20% back later.

Just built the A-frame cabin in almost 1 sitting with my wife. Lots of cute details and clever uses for pieces. I'll definitely have to use the record player/record shelf and swivel chairs when I build the MOC mid-century house I've been kicking around in my head.

Unless they have upgraded in the last year or so Firestar doesn't Pad Print their figures. They UV print, but at a right high quality.

A lot of the more bespoke brands do Pad Print too, like Jaka or Phoenix Customs, but they do limited runs of their figures with an individual one costing about £100. However, the secondary market for them is insane. I sold a couple recently for about £600 a figure.

Joining the reselling chat, locally I use Craigslist & OfferUp, and use I Mercari for shipped items. Mercari is probably as bad as eBay for fees but it has a wide reach and a Lego fan base. I have not had any scams / trouble and sold about 400 items over the past couple years.

Whenever I’m on the garage sale/buying big lots kick the minifig jackpot is always in the back of my mind. I’ve had a few $20 minifigs, the biggest were a couple $75 ones and the Janus misprint (black facial hair) which I sold for over $100.

Oh snap, that is the wrong leia head. I think thats the one from 4504 on the cloud city body. Clearly I need to do a double check before i try to list it.

Edit; my favorite bit of lego trivia is that 10123 cloud city uses old grey and yellow minifigs, and 4504 mellenium falcon has blue-grey and flesh tone figs, but they were explicitly designed to go together; the falcon fits on cloud citys landing pad.

Since most of my collection is Star Wars I have a lot that are worth $20-30 bux but the only ones I’ve seen shoot through the roof are a bunch of figs from the jabba sets (palace, rancor pit, sail barge) from around 2012. Lego has ignored that theme for so long that most of them seem to sell for 50-120 each now, which is crazy to me.

Agreed. I have a pretty extensive Lego SW collection, and the figures are worth substantially more than the sets, weirdly enough. Like this stupid 'car payment for a couple months':

I think it really boils down to if it’s a minifig centric set or if the build is the main draw. I’d say right now Mos Eisley is the safest bet to have some minifigs shoot way up in value once it goes out of production.

E:^ no worries just wanted to make sure no one actually bought that one. there are some fairly solid deals on amazon so far, hopefully there's an awesome big set like last year's surprisingly cool Monkie Kid Team Secret HQ boat.

Lego put a bunch of sets on sale, tons of unsurprising choices like the Hulkbuster that should only be bought to make that one Rebrickable MOC that's 50x better, Real Madrid, Atari, and Table Football. Black Panther is still heavily discounted as well. The phenomenal Lightyear XL-15 is knocked down to $35, which seems like a no-brainer for anyone who likes amazing spaceship builds and hasn't gotten it yet.

https://www.lego.com/en-us/categories/sales-and-deals

E2: Walmart, Best Buy, and Target have some solid deals as well. There are probably other stores too? The best deal that's currently available seems to be:

11021 90 years of play brick box for 50% off, among many other deals.
https://www.walmart.com/ip/LEGO-Classic-90-Years-of-Play-Building-Set-with-15-Mini-Builds-11021/784268754

and Birds of Paradise is $70 through Target

Hulkbuster is 43% off ($312) on Amazon for prime day right now (plus 6% in points back if you got their cc). Basically the price it should have been around at release! I only bought it to build the moc posted before though because jeez the Lego version is ugly.

Ugh 43% off is pretty drat tempting considering how great the Rebrickable MOC looks.

that code is grabbed already, and they will cancel it only after the order is made, so be cautious - after getting this info from customer service I canceled the latest order straight away after getting the cancellation of the free set notification, I found another different code for the same item, and reordered. Zelensky's Zealots
I got my two pieces in the mail from bricklink for the WOBB Ferrari I'm working on. I started back up on it. One page later and I'm down three pieces again. Now I'm starting to get upset.

This was still on step one so I looked through all of the bags on step two one more time just in case they got put in the wrong bag and they weren't there. I decided to take all of the bags back out of the box. There are several bags for steps three through six and only one bag for step seven. I grabbed the last instruction manual and looked through the pieces that were in the step six bags and the step seven bag.

Then I cross reference it to the instructions and realize that the bag marked seven had the pieces I needed for the steps I was on in step one. Including the two pieces that I ordered from BrickLink.

I'm glad these are all here and I don't mind having spent a few bucks because I threw a couple of the pieces I needed in the order, but there were three other non-numbered bags that just had all of the connectors in them. I never would have guessed that bag marked seven would have parts for the steps for bag part one.

So far the instructions are decent, but they don't always indicate when you're supposed to turn the assembly you're working on. Luckily the parts are easy to get apart :-)

I also found it on a coupons aggregator website of sorts (a local italian one so probably it hadn't been grabbed yet, guessing americans use those things a lot more), you had to click to get the code and it gave me a different code from that. It worked, apparently the order is now shipping and includes the free sandwich shop :toot: no harm no foul, just making sure others go find their own code to avoid a nasty surprise :)
