In Switzerland they had ninepin lanes adjacent to some of the older bars. They used this string system. My Dad said it blew, even though it was a lot less dangerous than hand-setting pins. At one point in the late 40's, in Philadelphia, he worked as a pinsetter/pinboy. Said the strings killed the pin action.

The balls were weird, too. They had a thumb-hole, and a curved slot for your fingers. All of your fingers.
