I watched a lot of adult movies and shows as a kid, so I don't remember any particularly scary stuff from cartoons. This, however, still sends shivers down my spine

lmao

when I was a kid i had to read every single sign out loud. I'd slow a whole family walk down so I could fully read a sign. didn't matter how boring that poo poo was. It could say EXIT or Toilets or whatev and I'd have to read it.

if my dad saw a particularly lengthy sign or a lot at once coming up he'd attempt to distract me so I didn't see it and it's a credit to his character that he never killed me in my sleep

lmfao. solid laughing at children today.

Body horror stuff freaked me out as a kid, I remember the face hugger from alien and the cockroaches that went under your skin in X-Files made me very uneasy. Same with some loving bug in Aeon Flux that I think carried a horrible virus but doubled as a spreadable appetizer? I could be getting my weird cartoons mixed up.

The weirdest thing that freaked me out as a kid though was Homer getting the top of his dome cut off and brain ripped out during a Treehouse of Horror ep. I didn't listen to Marge's warning!

For some reason Scary Movie 3 commits very hard to strange visual gags and those end up being the best part of the movie:

the scarabs at the beginning of the Brendan Fraser Mummy fell into that category too

also Vincent Donofrio in Men In Black.

Me too! There are a bunch of things from the Treehouses of Horror that didn't outright freak me out but unnerved me as a kid. It's fun to go back to them now with the lens of an adult and see that most of them were just silly, if slightly edgier, jokes.

True, but he did Scary Movie 4 and just ended up recycling most of the jokes from 3 in it. Maybe that was his last squirt of creativity before his soul was consumed by a demon or something?

Something I saw from the Simpsons was what gave me my first nightmare and made me scared of the dark for the next 10 years and I’m not even sure it was actually a thing from the Simpsons itself.

Homer went to get a beer from the fridge and it turned out to be some kind of chemical mix that turned him into an evil Krusty monster and then he started to chase Bart and Lisa through the Simpson house.

And then I woke up, not sure how my 3yo brain cobbled that one together

I had a kid at school last year who would stare vacantly into the distance and ask about things he'd seen on YouTube about black holes eating our planet or the sun exploding or an asteroid hitting the Earth and wiping us out and I had to just gently explain how unlikely those things were to happen. he was really worried

I was afraid of Jupiter. Just because it is so big and ominous looking. I'd walk into the bathroom and visualize it floating there as a giant death orb with the red spot looking at me and then I'd have to close my eyes and try to will it away

a lot of the treehouse of horror moments creeped people out as a kid because they are creepy

one of the coolest aspects of those episodes is they play the horror straight while keeping the same pace of humor as the usual show

you can tell where their sensibilities start with the first one where they kind of forget to do the second thing lol
