Otherwise, yeah, I would absolutely not.

If it's a mental thing to get your game face on? Whatever, you do you, whatever gets you going in the morning. IDGAF if someone wants to buy a no bullshit cubicle for themselves and put it in their living room so that they've got the full work experience and can really zero in on the mindset.

It's when corporate is trying to tell me to do this dumb bullshit that I throw my hands in the air.

edit: to be clear, if it's in the building, fair game. Something something client expectations something whatever. If I'm on zoom? Cool, I can keep a button down next to my chair and throw that on over my house pants. But what the person described about them demanding corporate dress at home in a non-video setting? Piss off.

I'm sure corporate justification was 50/50 between "business casual is one of those magical, intangible office culture things that makes work better even though it is regressive and nobody wants it and it literally doesn't make anything better" and "if we let the WFHomies wear tshirts then eventually office workers will demand the same and enforcing this dress code is literally 1/3 of our job".

I need clarification here. "Metal shirt" like chainmaille or Megadeath? Because both are feasible.

God-willing I will never work a job with a dress code again.

We technically had one before Covid but I wore it down to an absolute nub by getting into management for a few years and just refusing to enforce it because I don’t ever wanna wear dress trousers and a button down or polo shirt either, and then the pandemic killed it dead.

The biggest restriction is no collegiate shirts other than for our university, and my managers manager doesn’t like us in shorts. But I rarely go into the office, and I’ve got no school spirit, so it’s mostly a moot point.

My tattoos probably make some folks uncomfortable, but forget them we have no written policy on that thankfully.

When I first started my last job, I accidentally left my change of pants at home after biking to work and was left in gym shorts. I was so embarrassed and apologetic and took leave to guy buy some pants nearby.

Years later I was thoroughly at my leisure and didn't give a poo poo. I would frequently stay in workout clothes in the afternoon after hitting up the gym at lunch. The joys of having a private office with door!

I once worked a contract for a bank where I would travel around from branch to branch, crawling around under desks all day replacing pc hard drives in situ. Despite the banks all being pretty clean, the area directly around the computers was apparently untouched by the cleaning crew. Covered in greasy dust, plus whatever mud and whatever had been tracked in on employees' shoes. Dress code for me was white shirt, suit and tie.

I should say the areas I was working in were in back rooms or under the counter so there really wasn't any risk of customers seeing me. It was just professionalism theater.

What I should have done was go to goodwill and buy the cheapest suit and some used shirts, but I was young and wanted to impress. Instead I bought some nice new white dress shirts and wore my one and only nice tailored suit every day. All told, I'm pretty sure I lost money on that job.

Current job doesn't have a dress code, but recently we got a mass email from HR mad that too many people are wearing hats in our zoom meetings. They didn't actually come out and say "no hats" but instead reminded us that we needed to be "professional and presentable" for meetings. So "Hats OK. No dress code" is actually "Hats OK? No, dress code!"

I briefly worked with a guy who regularly came to the office in a bright red suit with flowers embroidered down the sleeves, button down western shirts and cowboy boots until upper management said he couldn’t wear the boots anymore for who knows what dumbass reason.

If you’re gonna wear a suit to work that is the suit to wear.

My workplace has a rough business casual policy, though shorts are banned since some C-level dislikes them. Otherwise as long as they're clean and you're not needing to please clients when they come through you can roll up in a t-shirt and jeans, like our lead developer does.

When I go in I still stick to dark slacks and a nice shirt, or nice cardigan over a t-shirt if I wanna show off a concert I went to. At home it's clean pants and shirt since I have to be on video for meetings.

back in grad school I knew an absolute tool of a fellow TA who absolutely insisted on wearing a jacket and tie any time he was "working." Scare quotes because this wasn't even just when he was leading his recitation section, but sitting in on lecture.

So up front you've got this prof who's a younger dude wearing khakis and a very rumpled button-down thrown over a t-shirt, some days you can see the graphic under it. I think he kept that shirt in his office because he wasn't yet confident enough to just embrace t-shirt lecture.

In the very back row you've got the TA's all wearing some variation on the theme of "t-shirts and jeans/shorts/cargo pants/whatever." And then this dude, dressed like he's going to his grandpa's funeral.

Years and years later, when I had my own classes, there was this one undergrad who would loving always wear a button down and tie to class. He was a young republican type who would try to "well actually" me in lecture about how the CIA wasn't THAT bad in Latin America.

I worked as a cashier in a Giant Eagle (PA grocery store chain) and for some reason the men's dress code was white shirt, slacks, and a tie. It's ridiculous because every other supermarket would let you wear a tee shirt with the company vest or a polo. I did get to wear a bowtie though and everyone thought that was really cool.

Last time I obviously overdressed: remotely interviewing for this job and the first day on the job in the office.
Both occasions I wore slacks, a white shirt, and a skinny black tie, pls my Buddy Holly glasses in my absolute best 1960's Houston Control Center Steely Eyed Missile Man impression. :bravo:
Nobody said anything and I stopped after the first day. Now it's jeans and t-shirt or hoodie most of the time. This seems to vary a lot by group, though. There are plenty of people in slacks and shirt.
