now every gotham story is about how gotham is an ancient city with secret centuries old societies and ruling families and its street layout is actually a schematic for latent bat god energies or some poo poo. big improvement

I liked the Court of Owls first story but the problem is they just keep. coming. back. and it's worse every time.

Kinda like how nowadays it seems like all writers can do with the Joker is make him go on a killing spree and each one's worse than the last. Like it's barely creative any more. Where's the A material?

I preferred it's precursor Gates of Gotham. Court of Owls was/is a neat idea of the other power elite of Gotham doing nefarious poo poo.

But Snyder really only had that one gimmick of _____ has a secret history no one ever knew about and it was applied to Batman and then the Justice League in the greater DC Universe. At least the art through his whole run in Batman was pretty good.

Court of Owls I feel works best when it's just a bunch of rich people doing each other favors.

Snyder also finally broke the seal keeping Cassandra Cain locked away because Snyder was so big as the Bat-writer even DiDio couldn't stop him, so he'll have my thanks for that.

I didn't really like the Snyder run much. He also got handed the bag after Morrison had my favorite Batman run and the New 52 trying to navigate with Morrison's stuff being in a greyzone continuity.

Maybe because I read it all at my own pace, and I love romantic relationships in comics, but I really liked the King run. Warts and all, I liked the love story more than the Batman adventures. The double date with Clark and Lois is one of my favorite DC issues ever. I'm a King fan, he rights stuff I like, but I get why others don't like it.

I liked what was happening with Miracle Molly and the Unsane. I thought that was an interesting thread to follow but I haven't seen it since. I believe that was Tynion? It made me start looking into his indie stuff. I really missed his whole body of work, but at least I've got plenty to catch up on.

I love Zdarsky, but personally I feel like his Batman is meandering a bit, especially in contrast to his Daredevil which is one of my 1st reads on new comics day.

The Joker has cut his face off in the last few years and then got better? He's just a full on psycho who is there for misery porn or some same old poo poo. I think a dialed down Joker would be fun again. The Joker is never funny anymore. Nicholson and Hamill's Jokers had humor.

Has anyone ever done a Joker story that satirises Joker fans, or would that be too close to making GBS threads where they eat for DC?

I'm not saying he needs to be a Ceasar Romero goofball (one of my favourite Joker appearances is how scary his sniper terrorism and police station attack was in Gotham Central) but he's like a mid-tier Twisted Metal character 90% of the time these days and the other 10% seems to be "remember Killing Joke?"

Joker is a lot more terrifying when you don't know if that will be water or acid shooting from the flower on his jacket.

I think Gaiman had him perfect in Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader? Some random guy is scared the Joker will kill him and Joker asks why would he do that? It's not funny.

The Joker stealing some kid's report card is funnier than killing him, so we need more of that Joker.

You could argue the Jokerz in Batman Beyond approach that sort of mockery, but I assume the general policy is just to not acknowledge them

It was a nesting doll of clues each pointing toward the killer in new ways till they are exposed. Then it only made sense if they were all knowing already and could teleport.

He wrote the first 30-something issues of New 52 Flash that are dumb fun that build upon themselves to a fairly satisfying conclusion. Currently co-writing No/One for Image.
