yeah agreed, 1950s jets were basically the best. they were turning out a new prototype like every month and they all looked cool as hell

Good news! The F-5 and T-38 are essentially the same plane and they made thousands of both.

the sr-71 is so weird and so awesome

so much of it works the exact opposite of how all other planes work

- the fuel is specially formulated not to burn. to start the engines you basically have to throw a lit molotov cocktail into them
- the skin is not super smooth but rough and corrugated like cardboard
- the metal fuselage gets stronger (not weaker) with repeated flights
- the fuel efficiency goes up (not down) the faster you fly it

all done using jfk-era technology and design tools and materials

just incredible

they have a A-12 prototype at the intrepid, it's pretty great

-its joints are intentionally loose on the ground and it's dripping various liquids as it takes off, in flight thermal expansion seals the joints and it stops

-not only does fuel efficiency go up, the engine almost transforms into a ramjet at cruising speed, most of the ingested air is routed around the turbines and dumped directly into the afterburner

first step is to admit you have a problem

the ole twin mustang is cool as heck. Its most notable use was as an early radar-equipped night fighter, with a giant radar pod slung between the two fuselages. This variant was called the "long dong"

the air force also made an attempt to improve the firepower of the aircraft over the original 6x 50-cal machine guns: the installation of a gun pod directly underneath with an additional 8x M2s bringing the total to an absurd 14x 50 cal guns, all centrally mounted with no need to worry about convergence or anything.

it didn't solve any of the plane's actual problems though, so this version wasn't ever used

this was 1999, so partitioning was still a mostly manual affair and you had to choose what modules to include in your kernel

A lot of Linux-distributions was pretty easy to install back in 2000, provided you ran in to no issues... which was pretty likely back then

mystes
May 31, 2006

IIRC Debian used to ask like 50 questions in the installer and also I want to say that it also defaulted to a dumb threshold for prompts for packages so you would get like 500 trivial questions from individual packages too

I assume the debian installer is better now but that was one of the improvements that ubuntu made over debian at the time since the ubuntu installer just asks a few questions, all at once, before it starts installing

i remember installing red hat back then, the gui for installing it was similar to (and i remember thinking it was easier than) the one for windows

which really weren't that complex anyway. if you just paid attention to the text based portions it wasn't really that bad
