He was wearing an EM bracelet which means he was being taken seriously by the justice system and thus was probably brown, not a white supremacist.

E: police confirming three dead, including the shooter :(

At the presser the PM wouldn't discuss any info about the shooter other than to confirm that there was no apparent ideological or political motivation for it, i.e. it wasn't terrorism or white supremacy or whatever.

Andrew Coster confirmed at a presser just now that the guy worked at the site, and they strongly suspect the shooting was related to that. The two people he killed also worked at the site.

Tone of the media questions afterwards strongly suggest this is going to be the narrative:

Lots of stuff like "was it appropriate he was on home detention given his serious history of offending?", "do you have faith in the EM system?" etc.

Police had searched his property previously and he didn't have a firearms licence, so big question is who the gently caress gave him the gun.

Here's a fun article 'Staggering' rise in older Kiwis renting predicted it goes on to point out that "pensions were set at a level that assumed retirees owned their homes outright and did not have rent or a mortgage to pay". There is no cheap solution to this, so I can't see either major party seriously addressing it.

Good thing national are going to raise the retirement age, freeze super contributions and make people drain their KiwiSaver to pay overinflated bonds. We're headed for a bright future, folks!

  • Step one is to change the age of eligibility, while unpopular it makes whichever party is in power seem proactive.
  • Step two is to do either nothing, or to create policy at the end of term so the opposition appears at fault.
  • Step three is to blame people for not putting enough into Kiwisaver.
  • Step four
