Well, if we're limited to there being trees present that rules out anything as far north as the Faroe Islands. I'd pin it to like northern Scotland, I'm pretty sure there were a few big coalfields up that way.

Yeah, this is the best clue. We know exactly how far Winterhome is from London, but not how far London is from Winterhome, but based on the map it seems to be one contiguous landmass (though the scouts can travel over the frozen ocean).

Seedling Arks Project Report: Entry Five
As work continues on preparing the city for the incoming Storm, concerns have been raised among the team members, some of whom are concerned that by splitting our attention between two objectives we will end up compromising both. However, people on all sides of the issue have agreed that no new laws will better serve our purpose or purposes here than those which we already have.

Sir, some of our people are restless. They argue that with the storm closing in, we won't be able to succeed in our mission and help New Manchester at the same time.
They understand it's a difficult decision, but they want to know what your priority will be when we have to choose.

Our mission is more important than anything, but we have a moral obligation to do what we can to aid these people - especially considering what they endured to reach us for help. As project lead, I am willing to shoulder the responsibility for the Seedling Arks Project and the New Manchester aid efforts both - in success or in failure.

Scout unit one returns to city with some supplies in tow, and is stood down. Unit two will search for New Manchester along the trajectory our guest arrived from, make contact, and head straight back home as well.

Speaking of our guest, he is currently convalescing in the care house, but will not make any real progress in his recovery until we upgrade our medical capabilities. Our medical post is scheduled to be torn down once the infirmary is finished construction.

The tents in this camp are old and covered in patches. It seems to be deserted.

We found the bodies of the other New Manchester expedition members. Their supplies were completely insufficient for this weather. That one of them managed to reach our city from here beggars belief.

The other members of his scouting party lay frozen at their campsite, and our own scouts were unable to determine whether they starved or froze to death first. It must have been pure desperation or determination that let even a single person survive to reach us.

A shiny piece of metal is sticking out of the ice.

The only clue to their direction of origin is this metal fragment, which we believe to be a part of a broken vehicle.

The infirmary is complete, and the patient is finally showing signs of recovery now that he is being treated. We were able to talk some more with the man, finally getting a name out of him - David Johnson. We expect him to make a full recovery in only two days with our new regimen.
At the same time, our bunkhouses are being upgraded into proper houses, so that we can be best prepared for the storm. We have enough room that when Mr. Johnson is recovered he can stay with us until the storm blows over.

Some sort of machine buried under the ice. Our best guess is that it's a heavy cargo crawler.

This vehicle belonged to the members of an expedition from New Manchester. It was clearly too heavy for the ice it rode over. Using it here was pure suicide.

They may have chosen the wrong type of vehicle for the terrain, but we do understand now how the expedition made it as far as they did while so lightly equipped.

Our scouts can see both an observation tower and a ruined warehouse from their current location, but Mr. Johnson is able to tell us that it is the tower they should be heading towards next.

We are well on our way to achieving our other objectives for storm preparation, but in order to speed up our coal collection a coal thumper has been built, with it and two attendant gathering posts crewed by three automata in total. Not an entirely efficient allocation of resources, but our daily coal production is certainly higher now.

This is some kind of temporary observation point. We'll have a better view of what's ahead of us when we get to the top of it.

We can see New Manchester! Many strands of smoke rise can be seen rising from it, which means it's still inhabited. We have to reach them as soon as possible.

Smoke rises over a sprawling city. Many people must live there.

The scouts have finally located New Manchester itself, and are making their way over to establish contact as quickly as they can.

This city is far bigger than ours, yet it seems far less advanced and more crowded.

Later in the day, I receive the transmission that the scouts have reached the city.

A dimly glowing Generator stands in the middle of a shanty town. There are so many people here... too many. They look sick, underfed and most of them don't have a proper roof over their heads.
Nothing can save them from the storm. Except us.

It looks like New Manchester did not have enough resources for its massive population - comprised mostly of workers, not engineers - and so was only barely able to get everybody in tents. They did not have had the same focus on research and development as us, and so they have been stuck trying to scrape by with tools and techniques that were not at all adapted for our new climate. They are barely surviving in the current conditions, and none of them will be able to withstand the storm.

We've found New Manchester, but its people are lacking almost everything needed to survive. We can try to help them, but only automatons will be able to carry supplies across the windswept wasteland to them.
If we want to help them survive the storm, first they need construction materials - Wood and Steel - to build shelters. This is just the beginning. They will need much more, especially food and Coal.

The first order of business is to get them proper shelter. Our scouts were able to establish a rudimentary communications station between our Beacon and there, so we have begun slowly transmitting designs and plans to them so when our first supply shipment arrives they will be able to build the same kinds of insulated and steam-warmed houses that we have built for ourselves here.

Less than ten days before the storm arrives. There will be no more votes held - from now on we must focus solely on preparing our city and our sister city for survival.

Seedling Arks Project Report: Final Entry
The day began with heartening news.

Captain, we've managed to treat the messenger from New Manchester. He's made a full recovery.
"Thank you. If I'd been in New Manchester, I'd have died. We don't have the means to treat such deep frostbite." His city seems to be dangerously undeveloped.

Mr. Johnson is grateful and healthy enough that he asked to be put to work. Because so much of our work these days is either automated or highly specialized, the only place we were able to find for him was in the kitchen, but he has not complained.

In order to send shipments of sufficient size to New Manchester, we require our mechanical beast of burden to be able to navigate and make its way through the wastelands unhindered. This also means that with each successful delivery, New Manchester will have a new automaton on site to help with their labour.

The last scouts return to the city, bounty in tow, and are disbanded.

A sprawling city with very little chance of surviving the storm.

We still have visual contact with the city, and have sent reassurances that aid is on the way.

In order to ensure a lasting supply of lumber, a wall drill was built at the sole viable site in the city.

Our city is ready for the storm. Now all we can do is wait and hope we have done enough to survive.
The poor bastards in New Manchester, though...

Our affairs are squarely in order here, so we can focus our efforts on rendering aid to our sister city.

The first shipment is away!

With basic shelter secured, the most pressing need is food. Hunger has forced these people to do dire things... May God forgive them.
Gather enough Food Rations and have automatons carry them to New Manchester.

Our next priority is gathering enough rations to last the New Mancunians through the storm. Mr. Johnson in the cookhouse has been hard at work preparing standard rations, but we need an automaton in there producing soup now.

Sir, the concerned engineers are here again. They argue that sending supplies to New Manchester is endangering our mission.
"We came here ready to give our lives so that the earth can be reborn! We can't forfeit it all now! Please, show us that you understand the importance of our mission."

Of course, the opposing voices in our camp do have a point. I promised not to send more automata then are strictly necessary to ensure the survival of the Seedling Arks - six, is what we calculated. We currently have eleven in service.

The next shipment will require two automatons to be send to handle the amount of food New Manchester requires.

More steam cores are invested in our food production. We have two cities to feed, after all.

The engineers on extended shifts have come by again, asking to be returned to normal hours. With the work that humans are doing becoming increasingly theoretical rather than practical, I see no problem with granting their request.

They have asked for three days of regular, ten-hour shifts.

This does not affect the automatons' performance in any way, and soon we have enough food to send out our second shipment. This does mean our own food stores are now nearly empty, but we can quickly replenish them.

The supply of food we've sent should get them through the storm. But New Manchester won't survive without a sufficient Coal supply for their Generator.
We've estimated the amount they'll need and... it doesn't look good. Let's do what we can.

We have calculated that six thousand kilograms of coal will ensure adequate heating in New Manchester through the storm. This is in addition to the eight thousand that we require here to keep the Arks warm.

Sir, the engineers who opposed your decision to help New Manchester are here once again to see you.
"You promised to focus on our mission, and you stayed true to your word. We're sorry we doubted you. It seems we do have a chance of helping them after all. We'll do whatever it takes."

You have convinced people you can help New Manchester without endangering our mission.
They trust you completely and are willing to follow you as long as necessary.

Every person is now fully committed to ensuring the survival of our fellow humans. It will not be easy, but with some ingenuity we can make it happen. Our researchers are working harder than they ever did back in their cozy universities!

Sir, we found a letter to you. It's unsigned.
"Sir, I wholeheartedly support your decision to help New Manchester. I know of many others who do, but they admit to it only in private, shamed into silence by those who see compassion as weakness."

We all knew coming here that the Seedling Arks Project would be the most important mission of our lives. None of us ever suspected that we would find ourselves working on two such vitally important missions at the same time.

Captain, the man from New Manchester has come. He wants you to help the people of his city.
"You have enough Coal to send help to New Manchester. Without it, they may not survive the coming storm. Is there anything more valuable than human life?"

We have the coal to spare, but sending it over will require no fewer than four automata to carry the burden.

Once the storm has passed, the people of New Manchester will be able to stand on their own again. It may be that we end up permanent residents there, returning to Site 614 only as often as needed to ensure the continued operation of the automatons.

Part of ensuring this city is self-sustaining is ensuring the automata can build and repair each other without human supervision. We now have proof that it is indeed possible for an automaton to produce another fully functional automaton.

There are tears of gratitude in the eyes of the people of New Manchester when the final transport reaches their city.
We did what we could. Their fate is our of our hands now.

The final shipment is sent. We have done all that we can to prepare them for what is coming.

With New Manchester secured, we can focus on our mission again.
The doubtful engineers have come forward. "Sir, we may have disagreed with you, but we're prepared to put it behind us. For better or worse, we're ready for the final push to fulfill our mission."

Supplying New Manchester came at the expense of some of our own preparedness, but there is still enough time to re-supply ourselves. Everybody, Oxford and Cambridge alumni alike, is working together with common purpose.

One of the industrial hothouses is torn down once we're confident that we will have enough food to last through the storm. The steam cores we recover can be recycled into more automata.

You gave your people time to rest, maintaining normal working hours. People feel ready to work hard again.

The team members have earned a break, as a matter of fact. That is because our own efforts are no longer needed.

We've gathered enough supplies to survive the storm. Everything else has been taken care of.

The welfare of the Seedling Arks is out of our hands now. There are fifteen automatons who will now take over the work to ensure our survival, human and seedling alike. If we make it through the storm, the Project can be considered to have been a complete success.
We are ready.

We were chosen
Stewards of the future

But Winter
Forced us to choose

We found another city
Helpless in the cold

We decided to help
Lives were more important

We saved all the Arks

But more importantly
We saved New Manchester

We took our chances
And saved our humanity

Let that be our legacy.

So ends the second scenario of the game. You may have noticed the ending was a little bit abrupt - it actually sends you straight to the ending video as soon as you've fulfilled all of your objectives, no matter how much actual time left is on the clock (I still had over four days). We never find out whether Site 614 and New Manchester survive the storm, or not - we've just done all that we can to be as prepared as possible. I quite like this scenario as a palette cleanser after A New Home; it's very small and short in comparison, but with a lot of character as the one scenario that requires you to literally build your own work force, and a very interesting and potentially difficult choice in whether or not to aid New Manchester.
The next scenario we'll be tackling is The Refugees, which is a return to a similar scale as A New Home. Because of that, and for personal reasons, I'll be taking a small break before starting the next scenario. See you again soon!

At the end of the day having it end right away is absolutely fine here if you have done all the objectives, you only have so many guys, and your steam cores are not unlimited either. And Frankly for your city in particular the engineers are fully prepared to die themselves as long as the seedling arks are set up for which we did, and New Manchester should also make it with all the dang automatons sent to it.

Researching advanced production buildings (Steam Wall Drill, etc.) is a huge, huge deal. We're back! While the events of A New Home and The Arks were taking place, a group of refugees were experiencing a crisis of their own. Let's take a closer look.

The safety of the Generator was reserved for the wealthy. We seized it so we could build a city where people are equal. But can we accept everyone who comes to seek shelter?

We were condemned to die with the rest of the common folk when London was destroyed. But we rose up.
We commandeered the ships that were meant to carry the wealthy to safety and sailed north. Here we found a Generator and claimed it for ourselves. Now we must gather all our people in this new city before the lords arrive to rob us of our freedom again.

Site 014's Generator was completed according to specifications, but for reasons was not selected for resettlement. The snowdrifts have built up since the site was abandoned, vastly reducing the available space. We're gonna make it a bourgeoisie-free zone.

After the ships we stole from the lords got stuck in the frozen ocean, we head out in small groups towards the Generator. Most of our people are still on the trail. They have less than two weeks of supplies and the weather is getting worse every day. We must do everything we can to make sure they all get here safely.

Here you can see exactly how small our available space is. We've got 43 residents to start with, including 15 children (remember those?). We are expecting to house 250 refugees in total. Things will get cozy.

Since we have children again in this scenario, we have the full suite of Adaptation laws available for selection. In addition to those...

...we have Purpose available from the start. The bottom option is our old friend Neighbourhood Watch of Order fame, while the top option is new:

House of Prayer is the first Law available from the Faith tree, which is of course mutually exclusive with Order, if we were to pick either.
Since it seemed to work well last time, let's go with the Strawpoll method again. You know the drill, pick three options, the three highest picks will be implemented in order of popularity.

What will our first three laws be, to ensure the survival of the Refugees?

Excerpts from the Journal of the Deacon of Sanctuary - First Days
Today by the Grace of God we have arrived safely at our new Sanctuary. It is here that we will find Refuge from the Cold and from the vulgar Excesses of the Nobility alike. Already we have begun the Labour of collecting Wood and Steel.

A Vote was taken, and the Majority agreed that in Emergencies such as our own Situation small Sacrifices must be made for the Greater Good. We have but Eight and Twenty bodies old enough to work.

The Task of collecting and organizing these assorted Piles is Labourious indeed. I have instituted the Practice of singing Songs, which are made for the Edification and Enlightenment of our Souls, during the Hours in which we toil.

A Gathering Post would do even more to ease our Burdens.

A curious Assemblage of Devices is hidden among the Caches of Wood and Steel. The Engineers have informed me these are Steam Cores, a vital Artifice to ensure our Survival.

On the topics of Steam and Survival, we have successfully activated the Generator. Though its Creators did not intend its usage to be ours, our own Creator arranged the Circumstances which would pass it on to us. A Collection of Tents is being erected around the Base of the Generator.

Our second Vote ensured that we would not forget our Faith. Though we have had to leave our old Cathedrals behind, a small House of Prayer will keep our Spirits focused on the Holy Spirit.

The Edifices are quite demanding in terms of Resources, and will by Necessity be lower on our List of Priorities than we would prefer. Already one of our Number has fallen ill and requires Medicine, and we must also convert our Raw Food into Rations as soon as possible.

The first group is finally here. We were relieved to learn that the trail is still negotiable. They saw another group behind them who should arrive soon.

Praise the Lord, Fifteen of our Brethren have made their way back to us! It appears in the Tumult of our Journey our Flock has fractured into many small Groups, each of which is making their Way to our Settlement in their own Time.

Language please, Miss Dove!

Captain, a group of our people wants to talk to you. They urge you to build a Beacon.
"It was so difficult to find our way here. Our friends are still suffering on the trail, lost, alone and frightened. We have to help them."

In order to facilitate the Recovery of our scattered Populace, the Engineers have brought before me a Plan to construct a Beacon. The first step will be to build a Workshop, which will allow the Natural Philosophers among us to follow in the scientific Footsteps of the Jesuits.

A Medical Tent and Cookhouse having been built, our Resources can be immediately allocated towards a Workshop. The Houses of Prayer will need to wait a short Time longer.

Before the Beacon can be investigated, we must have the Materials in Place to build it.

The first of Two Prayer Houses is placed next to the Workshop, so as to remind everybody that Reason and Faith will keep us alive!

The latest Poll has shown inconclusive Results, and so a Recount will be implemented. There are two new Laws which have been added to the Ballot:

Evening Prayers will allow me to give special Sermons outside of the usual Services which will lighten our Spirits. This leads to The Temple and Faith Keepers.
Shrines are small Constructions which will raise the Hope and Efficiency of those working nearby. This will lead to House of Healing and Field Kitchens.

What will our next Laws be, to ensure our Survival?
