Regarde Aduck posted:Young gulls do this to other species. I've seen them doing the 'feed me' dance to a very unimpressed crow that just sat there staring at it. Young Red Tailed hawks do something similar. You can see them flying around in the late summer screaming their 'feed me' scream to any large bird that happens to be around. By this time, their parents are ignoring them. I've seen the one year mortality rate quoted anywhere between the mid-30 percent range to as high as 80%.

I'm nowhere near the sea but there's a good population of gulls that migrate inland every summer to have babies on the roof of this one particular shopping centre in town. There's just multiple gangs of teenagers hanging around the parking lot right now, with adults vaguely keeping an eye on them, and it's so incredibly loud. Everyone is screaming at once. And fighting over the right to sit in puddles. (I love it.)

Everywhere I go in my town, there's constant screaming/whining/cheeping from all the baby birds The rook babies have a very distinctive loud CAWWWW, the herring gulls have a sort of whiny eHeHeHeH, and the little blue tits, which seems to be in every single tree or bush, all say tchi-tchi. It's really nice, but the parents must be driven crazy.

Five minutes later I'm being mobbed, one is digging through my hair looking for any dropped seeds while another one tried to steal my watch.

They look like they've been dipped in mod podge and rolled around in some hay So many huge thunderstorms this year, I was worried for them. There was even a tornado today which isn't really common here. I'm glad I was able to get home early enough to catch the hatching. I thought it would be a slower process. I was also surprised to see mom discard the egg shell far away from the nest because based on my reading, they tend to just leave trash in the nest and just sorta crap all around it until it turns into a cup.

I just took this picture in my front yard (australian raven (the bird, not me)) and look how fancy he is. Look at that confident stride and those dinosaur feet. I wish him every success with his nest-building and hope he isn't just planning on poking sticks into electrical infrastructure.
