I like Graveyard Keeper, it's a pretty chill plate spinny game. There's zero time pressure and no losing progress. Guess I just like to gather things to make things to make more things to build workbenches to make even more things.

Punch Club 2 is good so far, it's pretty much Punch Club 1 with no decay and more systems.

Some of what makes Graveyard Keeper a slog is that it just has no interest in rewarding you, and in fact likes to set up milestones where you go through a miserable, useless experience instead.

Like, in Stardew Valley, you grind out work to fill in Community Center pieces that unlock new things you can do and pretties up the landscape and environment. Along the way you talk to people who have a variety of personalities and dispositions.

In Graveyard Keeper you grind out work to move the plot forward only for plot events to be “get hit by lightning and lose your money” and “help the Witchfinder General torture witches”. Along the way you talk to people who are invariably miserable assholes.

Maybe the DLC added something because while a lot of the npcs are a bit of an rear end in a top hat to start, the plot is all about you helping them come to terms with various traumas and curses and stuff and reconnect with each other.

Graveyard Keeper likes to pretend it's a plate spinner, but it will give you a plate to spin, and when you've spun it a couple times, it will say "Great!" then throw the plate on the ground, you're done with that plate now.

Even the central conceit of the game, burying bodies for money, becomes obsolete quite quickly, and the overall goal of using that to raise the level of the church is only something you do to advance a plot track. Same, later, you get access to an underground chamber and are told you can improve it by creating an unholy summoning chamber by building structures and placing them. So you build the structures (the ones you're allowed to), you place them (in the exact same spots that the game lets you), and then you finish the single cutscene for the place and then you never see it again.

Stuff like that.

I liked the idea of the game, I liked the style of the game, but it's just a really dull game that's trying to ride on the coattails of a genre that it just doesn't understand.

My main memory of Graveyard Keeper is:

I upgrade the church (resource expensive operation). Then the Bishop guy tells me that I need permission (which is expensive money wise) to use my upgraded church. So I lost access to church (important source of money) until I bought something expensive.

It would have been okay if the order was reversed so this really felt like game having laugh at my expense.

I was really confused about that as well. But it's actually extremely easy to keep mood where it needs to be by going to Silver's Gym, talking to Silver (the main guy right next to the ring) and having a practice fight against him. Do that every few days and your mood will stay up no problem. And it costs nothing to do and I believe (not sure) that it doesn't even take time.

Definitely something the game should've explained, I don't remember the tutorial elements even mentioning that gauge or how to manage it.

Punch Club 2 absolutely has its own form of stat drain. By half way through all your attacks put you into a form of debt that you have to pay off by training without any benefit. You can avoid this by using lovely basic attacks, but by that point every one of your enemies uses nothing but these expensive skills, and of course they don't care about the cost.

You also get a couple of timed jobs partway through. If you come to either of these jobs without full meters and consumables and more than half an hour late, you will fail. More than a few failures and I think you lose the job forever.

I just don't understand why they keep making these design decisions.

Nah, you very quickly get a powerup that makes your moves recharge super fast. So far for me it's been easy to keep both jobs topped up, win the fights and also do extra quests. You also get access to a free bus pass forever.
Happiness is also super easy to manage. I'm pretty sure it only affects stat gain during trainig, and it recharge quickly by watching tv / playing games.

There's an additional meter later on that determines how often you can use stronger moves. It unlocks once you open up additional skill trees.

Dodges and blocks cost energy, sometimes it's better to take some hits to the face to conserve it. Also, if you don't assign any defences, then it's impossible to get knocked out, take advantage of that. You should leave at least one attack slot empty as it will regen energy during your turn, and remember that you can change your setup and even style between rounds.

Yeah I do all that, but sometimes you really want to hit the bonuses for a style so I have to include a certain number of attacks even if I'm a bit low on energy. Just seems like the opponents have much more generous energy expenditure, but I'll adapt.

I've looked through this thread and the first pages of this forum and didn't see anything about Oblivion Override.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McZvLE-KMcM

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1952370/Oblivion_Override/

It's almost identical to Dead Cells with a few changes. Foremost, it's sci-fi and you're a robot. There's way less weapons but each one has a special attack and effects. Enemies give you nanites which you spend on one of three power ups. Once you pick one, it gives you three more to choose one of. In addition to those power ups, sometimes there will be a special attack as a choice and once picked, power ups for that specifically will appear.

The controls are very good and responsive. The game play feels finished but there's only three stages and three bosses right now. Personally, I think it's better than Dead Cells. There's already been a few updates so hoping this one sees final release soon.
