My last run I accidentally downloaded a map with no resources and just decided to roll with it as it added a fun challenge to the game. I had the charcoal factory mod to make up for the lack of coal, but it added a real incentive to get off of gas and go to as much rail and public transport as possible.

Really makes me think that not all maps should have every resource, or at least that more map makers would leave some out instead of just making them nigh-inacessable.

My last save went on hold at 48,640 people. That's two major cities, one minor city, and three villages, at April 19, 1979. Cosmonaut principles, but water management in particular disabled (I think everything else was enabled). 130m rubles and 42m USD. The challenge was completely gone and I was opting to wait for the next patch to drop. Still waiting for it to hit stable.

That’s usually when I lose interest in a save, but I’m a special case where I restart over the smallest things.

There should be coop maps mode so we could each build a town in a socialist goon country
Each making a town that could specialize and supply eachother

It would be neat to do a “five year plans” save game. Pass it off to the next person.

It’s the garbage trucks with the large container, not the “residential” garbage truck.

I tried switching my farming to using a distribution office to collect the crops and take them to the silo's and the trucks are all just chilling in the office after doing one or two loads. My crops are rotting in the fields.

This works usually so it could be a variety of issues. Fuel not in range+powered, full storages, numbers set wrong on distros, distros not powered.

Thank you . I was in 1936. I changed the game to 1962, bought a few, and changed it back to 1936. Seems to have worked.

Ahhh that explains the garbage death spiral in my 1920s game. Never even occurred to me that they were containers.

Which, annoyingly, holds less crap than the normal garbage truck.

Because you're limited by the size of the skip which doesn't change, I dunno if eventually you can get one that carries two skips at once.

You need to have the specific brainworms where the calendar date matters way too much, otherwise yeah, it’s just slower and certain things (renewables) feel anachronistic.

I’ve now set up a proper recycling center and it’s 90% a good mechanic

Tearing down big buildings is “fun” seeing all the garbage turn back into steel.

All they need to do is fix how mixed garbage is called the same thing pre sorted, sorted, and burned . This makes using the DOs opaque

Also the vehicle repair thing seems kind of half baked. It doesn’t really do much . I suppose it would be a logistical puzzle if you were doing autarky

Absolutely agreed on the recycling. It fits very well with the game and though it is yet another service you have to supply if you turn everything on difficulty-wise, it just meshes.

I think vehicle repair is maybe a little lame in that it’s kind of… dunno, like you said: maybe simple or kind of half baked, but I think if you really want a challenging mode, having to maintain and replace vehicles is a very good way to add challenge within the game’s existing systems. The game sorely needed more constant drains - the only rough part is when you’re playing early and not sustaining yourself.

There should be nato or eastern bloc quests to fulfill to keep the borders open. That would be a huge sink. Something like deliver 100 tanks to the eastern bloc. I don’t know what nato would be. Something like demolish your infrastructure

Import 200 tons of blue jeans.

commando in tophat

IMO what would be nice and turn out really bad would be dynamic prices, so e.g. if you keep importing 200 tons of blue jeans a month from nato, it would get more expensive (I don't know if this makes sense, maybe you're buying more than they can produce?). And if you're exporting infinite amounts of fuel, if gets cheaper since you're selling more than they need.

At any rate it doesn't make any sense that republic of 10k people can make infinite money from single oil refinery, or that it would produce so much as to lower the global prices

Arven

They could have it so that exporting more than a certain amount of oil/gas (or any resource, really) pisses off the Pact, but makes NATO happy.

There needs to be a luxury good that function the same as cars without the additional infrastructure, but the only reliable way to get that good is to trade with the West. Everything you do to gain further access to the luxury good pisses off the Soviets, so it's a constant balancing act of trying to keep both sides happy so you can keep your populace happy.

I thought that this is what happens if you rely on land border exports now? You have to use boats to reach the international market which will be more stable in price.

There's internal and external price pressures that kick in but it's the same as the recently mentioned balance problem that you're probably self sufficient before it matters and I've never seen anyone try to characterize it beyond eventually starting to struggle if you try to bankroll finished goods with a single sort of intermediate good export.

Huh, that's cool, I've never noticed it. Oil refinery erased millions of debt (export by rail) on previous and current save, so maybe it takes longer to kick in? Because I mostly lose motivation once money is just a number that only goes up.

I think the prices do fluctuate but it’s hard to drive things like fuel down low enough for it to not be worth it still.

I think mostly you will notice it if you're importing stuff, to process it, to export the products.

The margins will get progressively worse from both directions.

I think it's just that prices are primarily (only?) affected by the frequency of trades, so trucks affect it the most, trains much less, and the giant ships least of all. different material prices will change at different rates, with some that are basically calibrated to be unusable for import/export. for example don't try to be sneaky in the new beta by importing hazardous waste for free early money. even a few trucks will drive the price to near zero within a month.

even without player intervention the market tends towards equilibrium, ultimately forcing you to become self-sufficient

drat, I had the thought of making an empire powered/funded entirely by taking other nations garbage.

Palcontent

It doesn't go all the way to zero so it does remain profitable, just not a good early industry or anything. Considering the waste infrastructure generally has far more capacity than you could possibly use before you have 50k+ citizens, when you do build it you would want to supplement your own waste with imported. I say would because the biggest issue is that the customs house loads waste train wagons at an absolutely glacial pace. Like one ton per five seconds glacial. I really hope it's an oversight or that they'll speed it up once they realize importing waste isn't at all practical. Trucks load at a decent clip but even if you dedicate an entire customs house to them you still aren't moving significant volume since it's so low value.

Keep it between the buoys
The vehicle replacement tool is remarkably useful. I had a newer, better model of snowplow appear so I went into the menu for the first time and replaced all my plows with a few clicks. Old ones get sold or automatically drive to a scrapyard if you have one, new ones get bought or assigned from depots and vehicle storage, easy.

I also discovered that small garbage trucks can unload directly to big garbage skips if you set their dropoff to one of the "transfer for big garbage container" buildings. So your basic garbage service goes City Technical Service w/ small garbage trucks delivering to the local transfer, then a dedicated line or distribution office with large garbage trucks going to the border or your waste processing facility.
