(D15)Well that should be enough to push Kotonowaka through to Sekiwake regardless of the slot situation, 10-5 would've been a maybe but I think 11 is guaranteed. Two more tournaments like that and we might see Kotozakura

I've been on team Kotonowaka from his debut, and I love seeing him fight like this.

Hoshoryu vs. Hokutofuji for the cup! Also, every conditional kanto-sho prize winner got it. Very cool tournament.

And the mercy seat is awaiting,
And I think my head is burning,
And in a way I'm yearning,
To be done with all this measuring of proof.
An eye for an eye

And anyway I told the truth,
And I'm not afraid to die.

On the one hand apparently this is more or less how Hakuho did in his Makuuchi debut, so that's cool synergy. On the other, Chokeiai

That move by Hoshoryu on Hakuoho was so quick.

Hosh had a good tournament overall, but the last few days of quick, efficient takedowns have been a step above, in my opinion. I think if he keeps that level consistently he's not stopping at Ozeki. It's a shame Hokutofuji didn't win, though. I was rooting for him.

Looking a bit further down the banzuke and Takerufuji is still on a role he went 6-1 at Ms17 so won't get up to Juryo this time but next time should be well within the promotion zone. Could get to sekitori status before his first full year is out. Oginosho got his first yusho of any type in his 14 year career after going 7-0 in division 5. Daibasho managed to get his first KK in his second yusho, he went 4-3 in division 6, not that impressive but he is only 15.

I wasn't going to say it, but I hope he is. Lots of injuries, plus gaining a reputation for choking when he's on fire. He's had a great career and it'll be a shame if he never finishes it off with a yusho, but at the same time I wash hoping the end would come with less of a whimper..

But I mean that's just me being super pessimistic. Maybe September is the basho he pulls it together

Thinking about it more, at his rank/score at the moment he's still very comfortably in the top division, so maybe there won't actually be retirement talk until he's in danger of falling out of Makuuchi, which might still be years away.

He's also got the Ozeki grace period so he doesn't have to get Kabu sorted right away. And being BFF with the chosen one in JSA politics probably has its advantages.

Going from 5-0 to 7 straight losses would suggest something happened health wise. Hopefully it's recoverable.

Oh right I forgot about the 3 years thing, I keep getting mixed up and thinking you have to retire as Ozeki for it to count.

Yeah, 3 years for Ozeki and 5 years for Yokozuna, that's why Kakuryu still gets to be "Kakuryu Oyakata" right now, he has like 3~ more years left before he has to either get a Kabu or leave the sumo world (at least officially).

See the second to last paragraph on this page: http://oyakata.seisa.de/oya_howto.html

Just checking the Kabu holder list http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Kabu.aspx?sort=3 and it looks like in Nishonseki ichimon, there's one guy who's 67 and one that turns 67 in October, so even if Takayasu retires now, the old dude can still run out the clock and hand the title over when they hit mandatory retirement at 70 before Takayasu's grace period ends.

As ex-ozeki, he's probably in good shape to get the next available slot anyways (I'm assuming he won't have issues raising cash), but if not, I'm guessing that's where being buds with Kisenosato comes in and Kise can gently suggest that Takayasu would be a great successor.

Nice to see he'll be staying with us in the top division for at least a little longer, it wasn't looking good at the beginning but then he won his last 7 bouts.

I was worried to see him kyujo in the first place and while I am glad he came back and accomplished what he did, I hope it's not at the cost of greater injury.
