those steps are at 19th and sanchez, my bicycle commute took me past 17th and sanchez every day so in afternoons until my bicycle was stolen a few weeks ago, i'd occasionally divert by a couple blocks, park at the bottom of those steps, walk up to the top, and look at the city for 10 or 15 minutes, guess if my insurance claim works and i am able to afford a new bike to replace my stolen one i'll have a clearer view without all those beautiful trees in the way.

edit: also you'll run into jello biafra if you go to the top of these stairs often enough because he lives a block and a half away and will also go look at the city occasionally

I will not shut up about the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. I talk about them all the time and work them into every conversation I have. I built a shrine in my room for the yellow one who died because sadly no one noticed because she died around 9/11. Wanna see it?

Why would anyone emulate these people again

It's crazy. This wasn't far enough, so now they're all up by Lake Lanier. I love the diversity in western Gwinnett now and stop by H-Mart etc every time I'm over there, but the people there deserve better infrastructure than this. It's a nightmare to navigate even in a car.

quote:

And on a recent earnings call, when asked about the bike business, Risher said that “when people ride e-bikes they like them a lot,” but from his perspective he thinks “we haven't done the job we need to do to make sure that every time a person rides the bike, they get welcomed into the Lyft ecosystem, and frankly, welcome into the rideshare side of things. So, we'll do some thinking on how to do that better.” In other words, Lyft’s CEO thinks Lyft needs to do a better job getting people to take fewer e-bike trips and more taxi trips, which is exactly the opposite of what dense cities need.
there used to be a bunch of competition in this area. things started getting shittified imo when Uber got in and all the other competition started pulling out. it was very easy for me to plan multimodal trips with rental bike sections (and cost relatively little back in those days)

maybe it would be better if they sell off or spin off the bikeshare business though

The bike share business lost money though and is tough to make the economics work, especially because dockless ebikes have to be picked up in trucks and taken somewhere to charge.

There aren't a lot of reasons these bikes have to be electric tbh. The conventional bike-share bikes work wonderfully but with the state of capital in the USA and how our cities are run(art of the deal!) I think any shot at having an affordable and effective bike-share program is pretty unlikely.

This outcome just plays out over and over and over again and each time the bikes are literally scrapped

My conventional, docked bikeshare went from cheap enough that I had a membership and used it occasionally to ebike-only and more than twice the cost. When I did try to use the new ebike only fleet, I found that a station would have only 1 or sometimes no bikes that were charged, and the rest of them were 70lb boat anchors with a dead battery.

Then my city made it illegal for ebikes to be on the greenways / bike paths, and they demolished all of the bike share stations that were near parks or paths, gutting the network. What's left is expensive, and only located near places with zero bike infra.

the conventional limebikes were very heavy compared to a normal bike. they also didn't really have gears (maybe 2?) so going up a hill sucked.

Probably less space than a couple of parked cars though, right? The annoying thing to me is that everything gets shoved into walking/biking space rather than the street.

my best experience with bike-share bikes is Portland's Biketown bikes. They had a driveshaft(chainless) drivetrain with some kinda shimano nexus/alfine internally geared hub with a pretty great range. The bikes were super heavy but they had a granny gear that gave you enough of an advantage to get up hills easily. Also you were heavily incentivized to park it at a dock, or even you could get credit just moving bikes to their docks.

there's absolutely no way that driving all of the competition out of business by undercutting them and then abandoning the market could have been the plan all along
