Even among anti car social media I read, where people recognize that the current state or affairs is a murderous dead end, many of them think the solution is that they keep living on a four lane stroad and traveling forty miles a day but there’s a horse in the garage instead of a car.

Americans cannot imagine a better future because they cannot imagine a better today. The ability to imagine a better today has been deliberately bred out of them.

there was a post floating around a while ago where an american was asking why the coliseum didn’t seem to have much parking beside it… where did the ancient romans park their chariots?

There really isn't an answer for the car problem in the US outside of it just becoming so prohibitively expensive that the vast majority of the population can't afford to have one regardless of how hard anyone tries to financialize it

I was a pretty typical American drive-everywhere-all-the-time sort until 2002 when I lost my well-paying at the time job, went through a lovely breakup, lost my housing, and had to relocate to a lovely apartment in a "lovely" neighborhood. My "lovely" neighborhood had a tram line, a grocery store two blocks away, a laundromat three blocks away. I could ride the tram to my lovely minimum wage job and eventually I figured out "hey, it's pretty good to not need a car to get around when you're broke." My lovely apartment was $325 a month at the time for about 425 sf of living space and it was perfectly fine. Lived there and didn't have a car for about nine years. I was pretty poor by American standards but I could cover all my needs without having to worry about a car and the expense that brings, and I could cover rent. I could go out to the bar, go to the movies, I could afford a lovely PC to play video games. It wasn't bad at all.

The great majority of affluent Americans will never have that sort of experience in their life, or if they do they'll just keep trying to live their previous life while flipping credit cards and shrieking on TV about how Joe Biden took their kid's potato chips away. Public transit has gotten so bad here since 2002 that my experience had this happened to me in 2023 would be entirely different than it was then. There's no pathway to that kind of experience in most of the US anymore.

we don't care about any of those. the pigs will just murder any serious insurgents. we had a civil war and now the whole country's militia is federalized, plus real military bases in practically every state, it'll never happen again. we don't have dominant ethnic groups in specific regions like the balkan nations.

I did something similar and moved into a house. I still have good subway access and basically never use my car and even people in my neighborhood think it’s crazy that my car is basically new after owning it for years. They complain about the price of gas and I’m like “uh oh is it expensive now? huh?”

Most of them are boomers and about 30% CHUD and have lived here their whole lives. Between their cable, cell phones, and car habits some of them are dangerously broke. Which is hilarious when you hear that demographic poo poo talking young people on facebook.

They can’t imagine any lifestyle beyond driving all over the place and watching sitcoms all day.
