Thorne, professor of science fiction literature at the University of New Chicago posted:"DALA" paints a vivid portrait of a futuristic officer of the The Interstellar Defense Coalition (IDC) forced to confront his own humanity, but the heavy-handed moralizing ultimately detracts from what could have been a thought-provoking work of military science fiction. While the premise promises an insightful exploration into the ethics of warfare, the author's simplistic dichotomies between good and evil fail to do justice to the complex realities of war. Maximilian R. Thorne, professor of science fiction literature at the University of New Chicago posted:While "DALA" stumbled under the weight of its own moralizing, the sequel "DALI DAJI" finds author Vance Collins returning with a more nuanced take on the ethical complexities of warfare. Set years after the events of the first book, Collins deftly explores how the consequences of Daji's fateful decisions continue to ripple through the lives of those left behind. By eschewing simplistic judgments, this meditation on trauma and redemption adds poignant depth to the characters. Collins has matured into a subtler storyteller, proving he can find humanity amidst the fallout. Maximilian R. Thorne, professor of science fiction literature at the University of New Chicago posted:With "DAJD," the third entry in Vance Collins' brilliant sci-fi saga, he has crafted nothing short of a masterpiece. Blending taut action sequences with psychological depth, Collins reaches thrilling new heights. Protagonist Daji, now a grizzled veteran, leads a heart-pounding infiltration into the rotten core of the Interstellar Defense Coalition. Every set piece is more riveting than the last, combining white-knuckle suspense with profound insight into the corruption of power. By the exhilarating conclusion, Collins has exceeded all expectations, cementing this series as a pinnacle of military science fiction. This is not just my favorite sci-fi novel, but perhaps my favorite novel ever. Dr. Miriam Greene, professor of young adult literature at Wellington University posted:"KHL" is a charming coming-of-age tale wrapped in a creative sci-fi premise, as a young girl discovers her extraterrestrial origins and grapples with her identity in this poignant page-turner. While the story occasionally veers into cliché, debut author Jenna Park has crafted an overall endearing journey of self-discovery that both YA and sci-fi fans will enjoy. Roger Atkinson, book critic for The Daily Gazette posted:"Stal Sil." remarkably transforms a gimmicky premise into a profound exploration of artificial sentience. Author Petra Collins deftly avoids the obvious tropes, instead using the unique perspective of an artificial intelligence trapped in a sports car to examine weighty themes of purpose and free will. A thrillingly unpredictable tale that challenges our preconceived notions of humanity. Jacqueline Davis, sci-fi columnist for The Daily Standard posted:"Sunta Aima" delivers a gritty espionage tale set against the chilling backdrop of Cold War scientific experimentation. While the premise of genetically engineered super soldiers is well-trodden territory, debut author Vance Collins executes it with skill, weaving geopolitical intrigue with pulpy action. However, flat characters and predictable plot points prevent the story from reaching its full potential. Still, genre fans will find an enjoyable, if not particularly memorable, page-turner. Alicia Moss, book reviewer for The Mars Gazette posted:In his latest offering "DACT", Collins departs from the military sci-fi trappings of his smash hit "Daji" series, instead delivering an emotionally resonant survival tale. Stranded together on an isolated planet, a devoted father imparts hard-won wisdom to his daughter, preparing her for a harsh world even as he secretly succumbs to illness. Collins' talent for vivid world-building and complex characters shines through this simple yet impactful story about parental love and letting go. While longtime fans may be surprised by the change of pace, Collins proves he can deliver a poignant gut-punch of a novel when you least expect it. Cassandra Dunn, children's book reviewer for Luna Lit Magazine posted:"Smal" is an absolutely delightful romp, following the intergalactic adventures of a quick-witted hamster determined to find the best space snacks. Author Poppy Fields crafts a fun, breezy story that will capture the imagination of young readers, enhanced by Tracy Chin's gorgeous, vivid illustrations. While the plot may be simple, that's exactly what makes this book perfect for sharing quality time and giggles with your little ones. Fields has created a new children's classic featuring a cuddly protagonist who kids will adore. Logan Pierce, sci-fi columnist for The Daily Reader posted:"Crotco" sets out an intriguing premise about an AI-powered cybernetic dog, but completely squanders its potential with lackluster execution on every front. The technological specs read more like an engineering textbook than a novel, bogging down any semblance of a plot. Character development is non-existent, with the robotic canine protagonist possessing less personality than my real-life autovac. Even the action sequences fail to excite, thanks to impenetrable technobabble that leeches all thrills. Devoid of any redeeming qualities that make fiction enjoyable, this monotonous slog feels more like homework than reading for pleasure. Do yourself a favor and skip this cybernetic dud. Images made in MidJourney, variations of: "(year) Retro futuristic surreal sci fi paperback book cover, featuring (subject or protagonist) titled "(word)", in the style of syd mead --ar 9:16" and the text was made using https://claude.ai/ which is hilarious because the first prompt I gave it was "Can you role-play as a literary critic and give me a short sentence review of a book called "DALA"? It's a science fiction novel written in 1972 featuring an officer for a military that has to grapple with the morality of his position. The book doesn't actually exist, so make up whatever you'd like." and the claude.ai decided this critic thought the book kinda sucked all on its own, lmao. That then inspired me to make more books by the same author and play off the fact that the first book kinda sucked. KakerMix fucked around with this message at 09:35 on Jul 24, 2023 |

Just as her isolated life has settled into a rugged routine, everything changes with the arrival of an enigmatic ship. Collins ramps up the tension expertly, leading to an ambiguous, cliffhanger ending that leaves the heroine's fate thrillingly uncertain. Roman posted:Thanks! I figured it would take a good video to get some traction. How many attempts are you making to get good shots out of Gen2? Are you doing any additional prompting on top of the image? I'm finding that around half of what I toss in is unusable or bizarre in effect. It's a complete crapshoot as to whether an image generates a convincing / cool clip or something completely janky. The worst feeling is when the clip is almost cool, then it does some weird poo poo like a sudden warp or adding a minor element that's not wanted (headless mask below, suddenly it has a neck). I subbed for a month to Gen2, but with the limited credit system they have in place it feels terrible to use, given the high rate of 'failed' img2vid prompts. Something like Midjourney's unlimited 'slow mode' generations is a better implementation that doesn't feel as punishing when a generation is garbage. I didn't go for yearly because I'm afraid Midjourney will release motion before then and it will blow everyone else out of the water. it can take some time to get a good result. before i paid for unlimited i ran out of credits, and i'm actually kind of annoyed that the video with the few glitchy takes is getting the views when I have a more polished one almost ready. keep in mind it is possible to inpaint stuff out of video, though it takes time. and the hassle can be worth it when the actors randomly do something cool. https://twitter.com/RomanIsntOnline/status/1683874136488128513

Yeah, that value proposition isn't really worth it to me just casually messing around, especially with inconsistent results. The project I've been kicking around benefits more from traditional video editing (for now). I wish Gen2 had an unlimited mode at a lower pricing tier like Midjourney or GPT. I get a hell of a lot of use out of relax mode on MJ and the free /unlimited GPT models. Locking an unlimited mode behind $95 a month seems excessive unless someone's working on a serious / elaborate project like yours seems to be. I look forward to when this img2vid tech is cheaper to implement / more user friendly and/or viable on a local machine with similar results, seems promising so far at least.

Dang, I figured with AMD in windows the only option was the slow bad directml stuff, but with nod ai shark I manage to do a little over 8 it/s for 512x512 eulerA, that's not bad at all. It's way more limited though, it needs specially tuned models or something afaik, and there are fewer features. But if you don't wanna boot into linux it's an option I don't see brought up much. Most stuff on it I've read specifies needing some specific version of amd drivers or it won't work, but it worked on 23.7.1 no prob. It doesn't seem like it can go above 768x768 so for me I'll still go to linux and get everything I was used to having on my 1070ti.
