Yeah, I'm pretty sure given San Antonio's cops, the union threw him under the bus as expendable.

Is there something specific about San Antonio that makes it more likely for the union to throw him under the bus?

I don’t think so. He was not out of the probationary period yet and thus did not have full benefits.

Since I'm apparently in Cop News mode, 8th Circuit tells an Iowa cop to gently caress off and no QI for him after he pepper sprayed someone filming a protest.

Former officer who was used essentially as a sex slave and then made to live in hell as her story went viral has sued the city and police department.

The complaint is here.

I hope she takes them to the cleaners. I recall crab dad's story when he was a cadet. He was told that there was an anonymous report box and that he should report anyone acting in ways unbecoming police. he reported a lot of sexual harassment anonymously. Then he found out that the box wasn't anonymous at all, they read his complaints in front of everyone, told them he couldn't be trusted to protect them, and then subsequently made sure he could not get a job as a cop launching the best naval reserve career anyone could dream of.

Looks like the FBI and Army SOC had a whoopsie:

FBI and Army members raided the wrong hotel room during a training exercise and detained a guest inside

quote:

Members of the FBI and the US Army Special Operations Command who were conducting a training exercise in downtown Boston raided the wrong hotel room and detained the person inside before realizing their mistake, the FBI said in a statement to CNN.

The FBI said its Boston division was helping the military with a training exercise around 10 p.m. Tuesday “to simulate a situation their personnel might encounter in a deployed environment.”

The detainee in this case was apparently a Delta Airlines employee, no real news beyond that. At least they didn't shoot the person, I guess?

Less egregious than some of the others, but still pretty ugly considering there was a global pandemic that just killed a million Americans.

A woman with tuberculosis took a bus to a casino while an officer with a warrant for her arrest let her go

Woman has received numerous orders to isolate and be treated for TB, and has refused. She's put under surveillance, with a warrant out for her arrest, and the officer charged with doing so catches her on a bus to a casino and just...doesn't do anything about it. Most folks would at least be reprimanded, if not fired, for insubordination like this - especially when it's a public health threat.

Useless piece of poo poo pig shoots and kills a three year old Yellow Lab that was clearly acting in a friendly and non-aggressive matter, angering an entire neighborhood. The body cam audio doesn’t activate until after the shooting, but obviously it’s loving horrible.

Really trying to not be an internet tough guy here but I honestly don’t think I could trust myself to act rationally if something like that happened to my dogs. Those neighbors acted with a lot of restraint in not beating the absolute poo poo out of that cop right then and there. I hope that department’s cruisers start catching bricks through windshields until that cop is fired and jailed for animal cruelty.

i assume that police receive either formal training or informal advice to "not take any risks" with dogs and to shoot them as soon as they feel threatened, considering that the likely cost to the department is so low. and then chasing them down to finish them off must be, at least some of the time, an attempted act of mercy.

some people take more readily to the task of petcecution than others though.

https://www.criminallegalnews.org/news/2018/jun/16/doj-police-shooting-family-dogs-has-become-epidemic/ posted:

The DOJ estimates that around 25 to 30 dogs are killed by cops every day, with some numbers as high as 10,000 per year. The totals could, in fact, be higher, since most police agencies do not formally track officer-involved shootings involving animals.

In Detroit, cops killed at least 25 dogs in 2015 and 21 before the first half of 2016. According to police records, two detectives had killed at least 100 dogs between them over the course of their careers. Meanwhile Metro Atlanta cops kill on average 50 dogs per year, and a Buffalo, New York, news channel investigation found that police there killed 92 dogs over three years, with one officer having killed 26 himself.

The pet owner’s recourse to hold cops accountable for killing a family pet, though, is not easy. The law provides “immunity” for cops unless their actions were “plainly incompetent” or they violated the law, according to the courts. Dogs are considered “property” under the U.S. Constitution’s Fourth Amendment, so a cop killing someone’s dog is recognized as a “seizure” of the person’s property. In order for someone to show a constitutional violation when a cop kills his dog, a person must show that the cop’s actions were “unreasonable” given the situation. Absent a constitutional claim, a person could sue for damages because of the loss of property (the dog), but any damage award is usually limited to the “market value” of the dog, typically the purchase price. Some states, however, do offer limited damages for emotional distress for the loss of a dog, but not many. Still, cops are normally exempt from claims under those remedies.

[foxworthy voice] if you're responsible for 27% of the dog murders in your department, you might be a psychopath

No, they're just loving pieces of poo poo.

It's not that a person becomes a cop and then shoots dogs.

A person becomes a cop because they want to do poo poo like shoot someone's dog with impunity.

Seattle police had a mock tombstone in their break room with the name of a Black man killed by the force. The department says it has 'no reason to believe' it was meant to be offensive.

A police precinct had a mock tombstone of a man killed by police in its break room, the Seattle Times reported.

Video also shows a "Trump 2020" campaign flag was hanging in the break room.

The department told The Seattle Times it doesn't believe the tombstone was meant to be offensive.

Beneath a clenched fist [BLM symbol], it reads "Damarius Butts, 19 years" followed by the date Seattle Police shot and killed him: April 20, 2017.

I can't find a photo of it that isn't behind a paywall, but it's out there.

Oh...kay. That does explain the DC though, Water Bear Don't Care - IIRC, tardigrades are extremely resilient to most hazards and can be revived pretty reliably. Heat, cold, dry, wet, etc. I can come up with some ideas but it's pure speculation, how weird.

It's not like they're any better with people. The CDC and FBI have been soundly criticized for years for how the track police killings, with a study in 2021 finding that over 40 years 1980-2019 deaths from police violence were under-reported in the National Vital Statistics System by over 50%. Study info here, and the authors note that it didn't capture the full scope of police violence as it only accounted for deaths, not injuries caused by police violence.

In 2022 1 in 20 homicides in the US were police killing someone. Average of 1000 people per year over the last decade. So 10k dogs doesn't surprise me, we have a serious psychopath problem in our law enforcement.
