It'd probably be insane to try and post here cos its so long, but it's one of my favourites in spite of the sometimes janky art and tendency to have pacing issues when read at release-pace.

What was the name of that fantasy comic about the tall pale man who was an incarnation of death, or something? A guy died and he brought him back. It had really pretty art and I just cannot get the right combination of search terms to find it.

Fagtastic posted:I could bitch for days about Popper, and why I think his bizarre longevity has led to the obsession with P values, the replication crisis, and the general shitness of the journals publication industry and therefore the whole field, as well as stagnation in the field of statistics (look at what statistics gets to do in machine learning for example, compared to the endless P value farming biologists are inexplicably obsessed with). I'm not really a practicing statistician anymore but I do have a degree in it, and I don't know about stagnation. The later part of the 20th century and early part of the 21st had a bunch of things that seem pretty innovative to me, such as robust methods, regularization (ridge regression and various L1 methods), compressed sensing (I think this is at least statistics-adjacent), the generalized linear model, and of course the bootstrap. And maybe I'm reading Gelman's blog too much but I'm not unimpressed by probabilistic programming and all those fancy MCMC samplers. I'll never disagree that statistics as used in fields like biology is in a pretty dire state, but I'm going to blame most of that on statisticians doing a lousy job of education, and biology departments not doing a sufficient job of quantitative training. (And don't even get me started on biologists and schemes! https://www.dam.brown.edu/people/mumford/blog/2014/Grothendieck.html)

Statistics itself is lively as anything. It's our fault, I know, but I blame Popper for our lameness. Well, that plus the shameful little secret that biology attracts all the science people who suck at maths.

Last time on Nodwick... This next batch of Nodwicks are still getting their footing and might need a small info dump for folks not familiar with the older TTRPG space (particularly D&D pre-3rd edition). Henchmen?: Yes, henchmen were sort of a thing in the older games where the goal of the game was run into a dungeon, kill everything, and take everything that wasn't nailed down. This gameplay loop meant that players would often struggle to find ways to actually move several tons of gold and silver out from the depths of Grizbad the Unholy's Redoubt of Horrors. Enter the henchmen - a hireling who existed to hold onto things for you and help you transport treasure from the dungeon to your base of operations. However, as you can probably guess, when you gain the ability to "purchase" another human being (even one that is entirely imaginary), you tend to argue for things they should be able to do other than haul treasure. The hallway appears trapped? Well, why don't we send the "expendable" henchmen in to check it out? If he dies, we'll just buy a new one! Cursed item? Give it to the henchmen to figure out! Nodwick plays around with the classic trope of "what if the assumed dumb character was actually smart and humanized." He'll definitely gain some more character as the comic progresses, truly earning the namesake of the comic. Also, you can probably see why hirelings and other henchmen-esque characters are deemphasized in later editions of the game. Not only has the goal and mechanics of the game shifted away from "get the most treasure," but the idea of purchasing or contracting a character to treat in ethically dubious ways was starting to look like quite the faux pas. Don't worry, we'll see lots of that addressed in the comic. As an added extra, here is - I believe - the first one page spread that Nodwick got in Dragon magazine. When I said they lampooned adventures, Aaron Williams tended to go for the most well known and recognizable and make some jokes that players would get. Here, we've got the classic Ravenloft adventure. Don't worry, you don't need to know anything about the actual module to understand - players ostensibly had to defeat the evil vampire, Count Strahd von Zarovich. Vampire jokes are pretty much what you're getting here.

If I was gonna make a Timelets 'fancomic' that's what I think I'd do. Feels kinda weird to say since it definitely feels like a whimsical state of mind kind of project, idk now I'm kinda embarrassed haha. No, I love that!! I like it when people interact with my comics, that's what I'm here for. Thank you for loving Timelets. I'm mildly curious about Girl Genius but I've always been put off by the art style. The composition and rendering is very good, but the characters' faces kind of have a Precious Moments figurine/Cabbage Patch doll thing going on and to be honest it weirds me out. I probably wouldn't read it if left to my own devices, but I'll give it a shot if someone is willing to post it. It may be long-running but it's got to have a shorter run than Prince Valiant, right? Previously on Tales of the Beanworld, Proffy started telling the story of how she met the Fix-It Shop in her dreams. Turns out that our Proffy isn't the first Proffy, thus confirming that something that has been a theme since the beginning of the comic also occurs on a greater scale than just day-to-day life: Beanworld is a place that runs on repeating cycles, the most prominent example of which before this has been the food chain with sprout-butts and Chowraids. Certain things have also been explained multiple times, which while I do think it is partly because of the long gaps between issues, also works as an example of things repeating. Previously on Manly Guys Doing Manly Things, why couldn't hugs work both ways? 05/14/2018 - I’d say you’ll need to watch the Unico movie to get what’s going on here, but these are all the broad strokes quote:In the effort to find something to make jokes about that isn’t already a picked carcass in the internet Wasteland, I watched the Unico the Unicorn movie. 05/27/2018 - He’s got a type quote:Sorry the updates have been kind of erratic lately, I’m in the process of redecorating my house and with how thin I’ve been spread between work and the gym and a couple zine projects I’ve been working on all that already, there just aren’t enough hours in the day to keep all these plates spinning. 06/11/2018 - Don’t backsass the limitations of my mechanics, boy quote:I know it’s been a couple weeks since an update, but honestly, after eight years of doing this with no break the whole house of cards just kind of collapsed on me. I had no ideas, no energy, no time, I just hit a breaking point where I was sick of putting up unfunny filler comics every week and needed to take a break to sleep and play a videogame to make a videogame joke about hahaha. And just like that, Manly Guys Doing Manly Things comes to a close. Kelly Turnbull is still one of my favorite creators and this is still one of my favorite webcomics. Was fun to post and will probably start posting one of her fancomics next, but for now I will take a break to just enjoy the other comics in the thread (Plus it's nice to have a backup of the full archive in case the site ever goes down again )
