If you have a GUID for [category] and a GUID for [sub-category], you don't need to store [category_GUID]_[sub-category_GUID] to uniquely identify [sub-category]. It's making these queries unnecessarily hard to read. I promise you will not have a collision if you just use [sub-category].

why is "set a variable to the output of a findstr result" so difficult in the windows command prompt

i had to switch to powershell to make it work and now I have to use powershell which is unfortunate as I know it less than batch files

I don't love Powershell but it's leaps and bounds better than plain old Command Prompt which is like 30+ years old at this point. It's worth learning the basics. Some stuff is still easier to do by GUI, IMO, but Powershell is great for not having to go remote into a server or whatever, and it is a million times better for handling anything in bulk. Use it to automate tons of stuff and don't tell your boss that you're doing it since they will make you stop since they hate efficiency.

Try this: every time you know how to do something in a batch file, look up how to do it in PowerShell instead. Check out AD utilities in PS, as well as the wonder that is a foreach loop.

INSTEAD I AM GOING TO WHINE ABOUT IT IN OTHER THREADS SO MY OPINION CAN FEEL VALIDATED IN AN ECHO CHAMBER I LIKE

We're changing some licensing, 300 licenses in fact, because E1 now costs NFPs 1.20 a month and business basic is free.

Bosses boss is afraid of a script to change this for 300 users and insists we do it manually and to have our HD folks do it; I immediately told my boss that's dumb and I have a script for it that I've used before, and we can just say we did it manually.

Boss came back and said "nah we'll just do it and I'll tell him you scripted it under my direction, I'll eat any blow back"

At least we're on the same page on this lol

Laptop discourse ... try really hard to not give "old" (<3 month old) laptops to new employees. Tbh not even sure it has happened per se. But the "lightly used" ones will go to co-ops, or replacements for people that dumped coffee on theirs.

We have a ridiculously generous buy-back programme with our vendor for MacBooks, holding 40% value after two years. All the budgeting is based on that. But lol my team hates stickers on the laptop with a passion because if they etch the top surface it's basically a screen replacement for resale.

I want our "experience" team to provide laptop condoms and then let people do whatever the gently caress.

How do you disinfect returned laptops from people using them while pooping, or being sick, or any other number of terrible things?

I've never worked anywhere that didn't lease it's computers, so this talk about new laptops for hires seems like a huge hassle. We'd have to buy like 40% more computers every three years and stash a ton of them in storage for new hires, then end the lease with 25% of headcount worth in the loaner pool. Maybe some places are willing to put up with the hassle of multiple leases? We refresh the whole firm at once and do our best not to buy computers off-cycle.

That said, there are definitely some people that really crap up their laptops. We try to roll those into the loaner pool if we can't get them back to like-new.

I had a user show up on their first day waiting to use their own laptop and my initial reaction was “lol no” but in retrospect the only two sites they need to access is our CRM and OWA, neither of which are restricted to work laptops.

Guess I’m saying just make employees supply their own laptops for sanitary and cost savings.

Semantically, "you" is both singular and plural, though syntactically it is always plural. It always takes a verb form that originally marked the word as plural.

Also, there is no plural when the context is an argument with an individual rather than a group. Somfin shouldn't put words in my mouth.

Taking it easy, being green
Hey this is a huge stupid newbie question, but if I want to improve a system we have in operation and have the knowledge to do so, would it be strange to bring that to my Boss' attention even if that's not really a role I fill?

We've been vacillating between work and no work and the no-work is so mind numbing ((no phones beyond our security gates *at all* unless you're a special case like a manager or engineer)) I've started learning powershell to make little GUI tools so we can automate some things *just* to make the time tick a little faster. Because otherwise it's just reading documents that aren't really useful for my ADHD rear end to memorize without having the process there to perform.

Today I realized: Our IAM is a gigantic mess, I don't think we *have* an actual IT department, just Techs, and System Engineers? and I think one or two of the system engineers actually handles our domain access, and uh, There's basically zero accountability for who has access to whose identity. It's pure chaos. People put their passwords on their laptops clamshell and bring them to other sections of the building, and everyone's password is some variant of "XXXXX1234" (same 5 letters)

I haven't even told you the worst part about this, The nVidia division right now across *All* employees is about 8 people. We're supposed to get more this month as we move into our new section of the building. They don't issue a new laptop for like a month at my job, so I've been using someone else's while I perform repairs, and logging everything under their engineering code.

I think I might have hosed up but I want to learn as much as I can before I try to move on.

Thanks Ants

The "here's money to buy your own laptop for work" thing falls apart the moment it gets dropped, stolen, won't turn on one day. I want the company to provide me with a laptop and to be responsible for servicing it if it's needed. I'm not paying for a battery replacement, I'll help remotely diagnose it and have it available for a Dell tech to swap the parts out or whatever. If I'm on site earning four figures of income for the company each day and knock my laptop onto the floor then there needs to be an agreement that a new one is getting ordered quickly, not a slapfight about who is paying.

When I worked as a airplane mechanic for a gigantic aviation company we had to supply our own tools. I had a full set already but if I had to buy the list it was nearly $1000 worth of tools in 2005. That isn't super uncommon in that line of work.

Laptops should be a commodity. If it’s broken it should be reimaged. If the problem still occurs after reimaging the thing 2-3 times, replace it with a new one and get the old one serviced and use it as a spare.

About a decade ago I had a laptop the desktop team couldn’t fix besides reimaging it, but they couldn’t find the (hardware) issue causing it either. Policy stated there was a workaround so I just had to use that instead.

I spent a month or 2 doing no work and just repeatedly bothering the in house desktop support team with reimaing it. was the cheapest dell available, probably $500-600 retail at the time (they bought several hundred units per quarter, so actual price was likely lower). The desktop support manager just wouldn’t sign off on a new laptop since there was a workaround.

At the time I got the new one it cost the company more money than buying me 50 new laptops (at retail price). After that I stopped caring about my output entirely.

This is ultimately what I try to tell people when they want work functions on their own devices but there are lots of people out there who won't advocate for that.

Having worked closely with a legal department years ago made me rethink using my own device even for just email and docs. In the event of some dispute you could easily get your poo poo taken away and put on some legal hold for who knows how long.

End user computing is a commodity and it’s one of the most annoying things to even think about. Who cares. Put stickers on laptops. Log into VDI from your home computer. Access web apps from your phone. Aggressively recycle laptops. Issue a new laptop for every user. Make them use seven year old computers you keep stacked in a closet like an insane hoarder. It doesn’t matter. As long as people can get to your poo poo and do work who cares
