they had an attempt a couple years ago too didn’t they? as long the country is basically at war with most of its own territory it’s probably always gonna be at risk of military domination and dictatorship.

the current president was nearly deposed before he entered office two years ago, yeah. looks like this is a palace coup that failed to catch on with the wider military and may already be over at this point. Nigeria put out a pretty strong statement

It's pretty common wherever the US trains officers in Africa. Burkina Faso, and Mali are other countries were it has become pretty common.

I worked at a small base in Texas for a couple months in 2010 and remember seeing a bunch of Egyptian officers getting escorted around

Yeah the whole constitution attempt failed two times before in 2012 and 2017, it was giant wasted political work. Kinda good it finally passed. :france: It also make the state secular so the current fear is that the imans who were opposing it are probably going to call for protests.

To be honest, when you must clean after Vincent Bolloré, a corporate fascist aka "a conservative billionnaire" (according to the NYT) who just happen to back "proto-fascist" presidential candidates, it's always going to be hard.

These coup governments in general aren't really aligning with the US, even if done by US trained officers. In Mali the French left after a military coup and Wagner took on a bigger role. In Burkina Faso a coup also preceded French withdrawal and subsequent warmer relations with Russia.

Feels sort of like what happened with Haftar in Libya, where someone the US probably saw as an asset struck out on their own.

Seems like the US training isn't as successful at indoctrinating officers into pro-US worldviews anymore. Looking at the results it still seems pretty good at teaching the military how to seize control of the government.

With one hand he saves gebs. With the other he commits goblin genocide. A true neutral.

What kind of domestic policies have these military coup governments been doing over the years? I'm not really reading any news about it other than sounding alarm bells over french Africa turning to Russia if that's what even is happening.
