Partitio was instantly my favorite for that reason. Just having a guy who wants to take what Capitalism *can* be and doing the most with it is so fun to get invested in. I remember there were tons of people who got angry that "I'm going to get rid of the devil called poverty" wasn't *actually* a Socialist rallying cry though. Honestly, there are enough stories about that, so I was happy to see how Partitio would go about his more unique (according to media nowadays) brand of merchanting. There were definitely parts of his story I think could have been written a little tighter, but overall it did a good job of showing that there are different ways to go about Capitalism that isn't just "evil nasty moustache twirling deforestation monster."

Oh boy, smells delicious!

So you wouldn't really call it "beef and veggie stir-fry surprise," now would you?

So fill up on the name if nothin' else! Please?

Overwhelming Despair

We dig and dig, pull up all the silver we can sell, and it only gets us enough coin for table scraps. That contract I signed... Biggest mistake I ever made.

I can't believe I didn't notice that fine print when I signed the darned thing...

Then snatched the whole thing back once the silver started taking off!
......

I ended up pushin' myself so hard tryin' to turn a profit, I drove myself into the sickbed.

Fine words. When'd you get so eloquent, chickadee?

Hold on, Pops! I...I'll go buy you some more pharmaceuticals!

I'm sorry, son...

The past eight years have not been kind to the residents of Oresrush.

Oresrush, Dried Up

Partitio's crew is still around, but...

...they're all in bad spirits, just struggling to survive.

Fortunately, apothecaries will visit even the poorest regions.

...Hmm.

As he heads back to Papp...

Boss... Got any work for us?
None of us have had a job for days. We can't even afford a decent meal.
This town's done for... We've lost everything...

...
Hey, Boss? Got a job for me? Any job?

It's hard to make a livin' with that silver mine now. The landowner's laws are squeezin' us dry.
drat... What are we supposed to--

Shaddup, I'm takin' it! I've got mouths to feed too!
That's enough.

Boss, I...
......

Sorry, Harry. Sorry, Nikki. It's my fault you're sufferin'. If only I could make things better... If only I could look out for ya.

I never knew...what a devil poverty was...or how much pain it could bring...

Partitio clearly cares for his workers. Even in the worst of times, he's giving what little he can to keep them alive. It's this loyalty they have to each other that's gotten them through these terrible times.

If nothing else, at least they have each other. That said, that's not enough to fill their stomachs.

Giff. As if today couldn't get any worse.

The most important thing in life is figuring out whose side to take, bucko.

Miscreant's Melody

A merchant like you should understand the power of a flimsy piece of paper.
...What do you want, Giff?

A lotta competition in the silver trade lately. Ore pirces are going down, down, down. Hurts the boss's kindly ol' heart to do this, but times are tough.

Yeah! We're all strugglin' just to eat!
Hm? Getting rebellious, eh?

Though none of you can afford to buy lemons anymore, can you? Hah!

You know things are dire when Partitio and the gang are getting bullied around by Giff.

But, what else can they really do...?

-----

SILENCE

*cough* *hack*...

Nothing...nothing at all.
......

Why not just go for it? Do whatever it is you wanna do most?
......
You'll never lose if you never try, son.

...That settles it.

Papp is probably thinking that what Partitio wants to do most right now is to leave Oresrush and travel the world. And while he's kinda right, for now that comes second to one thing:

Kicking Giff's rear end.

-----

They're gonna squeeze us until we're dry as the desert sand...

Y-you mean it!?
I've been holdin' back ever since they took our deed away from us. We've all suffered in silence. Now, well...I've finally understood.

They don't care a whit 'bout what happens to us or our town.

Oresrush, Pioneer Town (Night)

This is our town! We'll fight for it!
Heh, thanks fellas.

At this point, we can choose to hire one of our posse to join us, if we desire.

They're kinda weak so I don't really bother.

But they're all in good spirits for the first time in a long, long time, ready to kick some landowner rear end.

To find Giff, we have to go back to where the mine is, but then continue to the east.

Along the way, I pick up Collect, since Partitio clearly needs the money.

There's this nice little minecart bridge with a beautiful view in the distance. Well, it'd probably be beautiful if it weren't so blurry.

Eventually, we reach Giff's Manse.

Den of Darkness

Well, someone's been well off the past eight years...

There's a few of Giff's hired thugs roaming about, but they're no match for Partitio.

Along the way, Partitio decides to take a bit of what is owed him. That shield and helmet are good upgrades, if nothing else.

Looks like we've reached where Giff and his cronies are.

Video: Contract Rewritten

Scheming

Heh, you said it, Giff!

Hm? Look who it is. I'm moved, I am. Came to give me what you owe me early?
Heh. Somethin' like that.

Every fortune's made from a pile of these: the little guys.

Hmph. What a joke.
We've made up our minds, Giff. We're takin' our town back.

What'd you say!?

The landowner slipped it in at a later date, all quiet-like.

Thanks to you, we've lived fat off the hog! Earned ourselves a mine and a buncha fool miners for next to nothing.

......

In Pursuit of Happiness

You tricked my pops and stole everythin' from us.
Yeah, well, too bad. This world, see?

......

Get ready, Giff.

Video: Boss - Giff

Critical Clash I

Partitio's fighting Giff along with a couple of his goons.

This crew doesn't hit too hard, but all these light attacks will add up, so better to go on the offensive when you can and take out the thugs first.

Giff can give buffs to his cronies. This one boosts speed.

Meanwhile, the goons can hit twice and also debuff Partitio's physical attack.

Giff has a powerful attack that's also woefully inaccurate. In fact, I'm not sure it can even hit at all this early in the fight.

The strategy is simply to whittle down one thug at a time, and use liberal amounts of Rest when necessary.

One down.

Giff can also try throwing money at the problem, in this case boosting the P.Atk of the remaining toadie.

Though he's still no match for Partitio.

At this point, Giff will actually hit with his big attack if allowed to.

So, of course, I don't.

Tch... Can't believe trash like you is giving me trouble...

Get over here and finish this fool!
Heh. Now you call for help?

On the Mark hits hard when it does hit. Of course, the fool also did this right as Partitio unlocked his Latent Ability.

Partitio's Latent is Hoot and Holler, and it simply maxes out his BP. This is immensely useful for a variety of situations and is arguably in the top tier of latent abilities.

But first, time to get paid.

Then, we pay it forward.

And finally, payback.

SILENCE

W-wait! Spare my life!

Whoa there, silver...
So this's where you've been hidin' all the coin you swiped from us!
We can rebuild our town with this!
You won't blame me, right? I was just following orders...

I...I can't do that! No one's ever met 'em.

Neither me nor Pops ever had a face-to-face.

You can't make me talk! It'll be my hide if I do!

......

What...?

So, the man who has been taxing the residents of Oresrush so heavily, the one that sent the town to the brink of poverty...is the same man who helped build this town. He falsified the contract so he could squeeze every leaf out of the townspeople he once knew so well, including his former business partner, with no remorse.

The man's got a ruthless mind for business. This was his plan all along.
You're lying... This has to be some mistake... I'm sure of it.

-----

Oresrush, Pioneer Town

Life's returnin' to our little town.

We're gonna work you hard until you pay off your debt, y'hear?

Oof... Ah, excuse me, Mr. Partitio, sir!

Yeah, thanks to you. I'm too busy to be dead, hah!

It sure is. Heh. Oh, I almost forgot. I made arrangements to get the materials you wanted.
Ooh, you're a lifesaver!

Hey, Partitio...

Huh? We're talkin' now, ain't we?
Just be quiet and follow me for a spell, will ya?

-----

We started from nothin' and had our fair share of ups and downs...
Yeah, you can say that again.

I don't give a hoot about Roque no more, son. He left us in the lurch. I don't ever wanna see his face again.

You're gonna be something, if I reckon right. Something too big for this little town to contain even if it wanted to.
Pops...

Boss!
Partitio!
Boss!

That's why...I want you to hit that dusty trail already. Get along, little chickadee.
This town's my home. I grew up here.

Ever since...Mister Roque took off and left us.
......
I don't regret stayin' here, not for an instant.

Boss...

But somewhere out there, I know there's folks sufferin' just as much as we did, or worse.

Being a merchant ain't just 'bout makin' bundles of leaves. It's the reason why that matters.

Partitio, the Merchant

Pops...

Go on! Help others like you helped us! Bring prosperity to all those troubled folks out there!

Get along now, Partitio. We'll see to the town while you're gone.
Yeah! We'll keep it safe and sound!
Don't worry 'bout us, Boss!
Boss! Take care out there!

Heh, if you all say so, I got no choice, now do I?

And with that, we are finished with Partitio's Chapter 1.

Which means it's time to select our next party member! Voting will once again be two or three-ish days, as I show off more stuff.

Next time, we'll take a tour of Oresrush, then finally tackle a couple of Side Stories!

This was one of the parts I felt could have been a little better written. I get that Partitio didn't want to leave his home, but the main point of business and capitalism is, if doing one thing isn't getting you the money to do something, you go and find something else. His posse can certainly handle themselves in a fight; they could have easily become caravan runners, being bodyguards for merchants and go from town to town. If Partitio bought up *all* of the workers in the area, then Roque would have no choice but to offer more money as the men refused to work with him; either that or force Giff and his posse to get their hands dirty, which would keep *him* out of that mansion since he would be the worker rather than the tax collector.

There are times that it feels like they're telling us Partitio is the smartest, most genius merchant, but they're not showing us that. I get that they needed him to experience poverty, but having him wait around for eight years without even attempting to start being an entrepreneur felt like he was coasting through life. It bothered me a little bit, and didn't help to show how to "win" at capitalism without just beating up the competition. Once again, I get the story needed to go this way, and I get that this is an RPG, where beating up the competition is the name of the game. It just felt like Partitio could have been a wee more proactive in the 8 year time skip, and have it mentioned offhand that his business attempts were getting quashed or something.

But Partitio's theme is by far the best part of this whole OST, just like Alfyn's was OT1's. What can I say, I'm a sucker for some good sax.

It's hard to use capitalism and business to set up a new solution when you don't even have the money to properly feed yourself. Still, I do agree that the set-up of Partitio opens the door for more unique quest resolutions than typical RPG beat-up-the-bad-guy stuff.

Also, that Rest ability is amazing! Compared to Temenos's boss fight, which had a lot more careful resource management, Partitio basically had to play poorly to lose that boss fight. I imagine that later bosses will make it harder to pull that off - especially since it's only for him - but the toolbox is already impressive.

ApplesandOranges

Thankee kindly.
The Chapter 1 in OT2s are good because it really lets you experience playing as that character/job. Compare that to OT1, where your starting character has the hardest Chapter 1s and then as you get more party members the subsequent ones get easier.

And yeah, Rest makes Partitio's a cakewalk. There are a few other Chapter 1s that are much more difficult.

Also gotta say, as much as I love Partitio's sprite with the hat, it's a shame you can never take it off again (in his base job, at least).

Partitio's Chapter 1 also feels substantially longer, though that may be me imagining it, but with the extended childhood flashback at least, it certainly adds a lot more atmosphere. Feels like the developers really wanted you to love him.

That's exactly my problem with Chapter 1. I remember people saying that Partitio is *akchually* the best and coolest socialist ever. Like, when the moral of the story you're pointing out is "if you don't have capital, just beat up the people who do" and attribute it to your capitalism guy, no one is going to believe that capitalism is the way to solve things.

So I asked whether I need to read the Octopath 1 LP to understand this, but then I went ahead and binged it anyway. That was a truly great LP, Mega64!

So now I have questions/speculations about this game, based on the first one. I'll spoiler them just to be safe, I don't know whether it's okay to bring up Octopath 1 stuff like this.

So the big bad of game 1 was the very dark god that the twelve gods sealed away. And it turned out that all the 8 main plots all were connected to the attempt to free said dark god.

Now we have Temenos' story starting with a fight of Aelfric against Galdera. The pontiff gets murdered, and four flames representing the gods get toppled, which is probably extra significant since you could fight 4 of the twelve gods in Octopath 1.

This seems super significant to me, and I would for now say this looks a lot like big Main Plot energy.

Meanwhile, Partitio struggles with poverty.

Now, I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out the guy betraying Partitio and his father is involved in another attempt to free Galdera. Perhaps he paid off these obviously evil temple guard people?

In any case, it seems like we made a good choice when we decided to go with Temenos first.

Not quite the message they're trying to convey there. It's more like, "If you're under the thumb of people who are cheating you out of your wages and lining their own pockets, then you need to rise up and get what's owed to you." Partitio's story is about money and the myriad ways that people can use it, whether greedily or fairly, and this is essentially a worker revolt. He's not stealing stuff they didn't work for, but instead distributing the wealth from the mine to the people who actually put in the labor to get it.

An important part of every union strike is the ability to discourage scabs and fend off the abuses of the bosses as they send in bully boys.

Sometimes, historically, by breaking knees.

I kind of interpret Partitio as more a socialist than a capitalist, but honestly the setting is at a technological and societal point where the distinction is largely academic.

Partitio's storyline involves the writers dipping a toe into some weird waters. you do not get a lot of RPGs trying to make "boy the early industrial era involved a bunch of terrifying exploitation" a plot point, mostly because it is a complexly nuanced nightmare and you do not want to spend your time trying to pick that nightmare apart.

Victoria 3 gamifies the whole mess: industrialists are the only power capable of standing up to the aristocratic landowners for a very, very long time. aristocrats, rightly, accuse the industrialists of being rapacious exploitative monsters who will feed the whole world into their factories if they think they can get a buck off it, and industrialists, rightly, accuse the aristocrats of being inbred fossils who would sooner see half their children dead than be taxed a single penny in order to build a school. the third player is usually the church. you are playing a JRPG, you know about the kind of problems the Church has back now, just replace the weird demon monster with too many limbs they're usually secretly worshipping with an old guy saying "yeah I just want to preserve the privileges my job's had for the last five hundred years."

this is not a dynamic that produces a lot of good guys!

the bits of Partitio's story that work best are the ones where he comes off as a folk hero. this is the kind of bad poo poo that happens back now. well, the story of Partitio says this is how HE fixed it, and gol durnit, if it was good enough for ol' yellowjacket it's good enough for us.

Oresrush, Pioneer Town (Night)

I was gonna do Oresrush as its own update, but it's kinda small and there's not much to do, so I'm just gonna start lumping in the smaller cities into Side Story updates because why not.

Also I'm gonna start at night this time so I can get info first.

Seems big events happen every eight years with the Yellowil family. Anyway, Papp's definitely come a long way.

A lot of these fellas are too tough to beat info out of, so we'll have to come back to them.

I take in horses who've lost their masters or are injured in war, and see they're well cared for. But it's no easy task. You need to understand the equine heart to truly care for them. If you meet anyone with those skills, I'd be grateful if you could introduce them to me.

I have the feeling this will come up for a later Side Story.

Oof.

At least this ring is a nice +200 Max HP. I throw it on Partitio.

Sometimes you don't need to Coerce someone to learn about them. She's clearly not one to mess with.

Giff seems to be taking the working life better than expected.

There's a northern part of town where the Foundry is.

I can't risk you damagin' my, eh, lawfully procured goods.

We'll have to come back to this lovely fella once we can knock his butt out.

That's basically all of Oresrush for night. Let's see how lively it is during the day!

Oresrush, Pioneer Town

The people here aren't too exciting during the day either.

I buy a few cheap concoction ingredients though. I'm holding off on bigger shopping sprees for now, plus I get the feeling we won't be needing to do too much shopping...

Of course, a lot of these folk are day-only so we can't glean info from them right now. This fella does have a decent spear upgrade though.

I'm really curious what this woman's deal is. She's so chipper, and seems to know Partitio well.

Unsurprisingly there's a lot of incidental dialogue for certain path actions, such as Purchase.

Anyway, that's roughly it for Oresrush. I'm sure we'll be back later to catch up on some things, but for now let's get another Side Story out of the way.

I've tried all my favorite gags already, and she didn't so much as giggle! I'm sure one of my best friends'll have something that'll have her slappin' her knee... But I can't ask 'em! It'll be embarrassin' to admit I ain't funny enough! Hmm... Wonder if there's a good joke just layin' 'round here?

So our mission today is to help Joe woo somebody by collecting jokes for him.

As he said, his friends might be a good source of comedy, so let's check up on them.

Oresrush, Pioneer Town (Night)

I DEMAND YOUR JOKE.

See that girl over there? Lately, I've had my eye on her. So I decided to become a thief and steal her pretty little heart.

I, uh, don't know how this will help, but OK. Let's see if we can improve on this...

CONFESS YOUR COMEDY.

I didn't have enough leaves for a night on the town, so I thought I'd sell some ol' junk. I go up to my wife, and say, "Hey, darlin'! Do you have any useless ol' things you wanna get rid of?"

Ahahahaha! My wife, she's a riot, I tell you! She knew I was just lookin' for some spare change to waste on partyin', so she let me have it!

Harry seems to really love this joke for some reason. Again, I have no clue how this will help Joe, but, uh...

...surely the best was saved for last?

ENTERTAIN ME, OR ELSE.

I once knew a man who couldn't refuse any job, no matter how demeanin'. So one day, I asked him, "Who can't you just shake your head and say no?"

...HA HA HA HA! Hilarious, right?

Oh dear. This is what we have to work with. Clearly Temenos didn't beat them hard enough.

No? Oh, sorry 'bout that, then. I guess it's just Joe who's desperate for a giggle.

Honestly, I lucked out in Coercing her, as she is pretty strong.

And here's Joe, for good measure.

Oresrush, Pioneer Town

Anyway, we've clearly failed in our mission. But if Joe is as smooth as he thinks he is, maybe he can salvage all of this into something usable.

Ahaha! Those three always knew how to make me laugh! I loved all of those stories!

-----

This is my last laugh, promise! I combined four people's worth of fun and made a real hooter!

...And? Your point? That doesn't make a lick of...

The more I think 'bout it, the less sense it--dahahaha! It's so absurd, it's somehow funny!

...I will say, Joe probably did the best he could with that material. Whether he's an aburdist comedic genius or brilliantly inept, I don't think I'll ever know.

It's not a silly laugh! It's the loveliest laugh I've ever heard!
...Thanks.

That said, Joe seems a legit good guy, even if his humor is kinda out there.

H-hey! What're you fellas doin' here!?

You did it, Joe! You came up with a knee-slapper!

Well, I think our work here is done.

The reward isn't major, but it's a decent chunk of spending money and a nice stat boost. And also we got two people together through the magic of comedy, and isn't that reward enough?

Then again, I think it was real cute how she blushed afterwards. Hehe.

Just the other day, he did the strangest thing with his eyelids... Dyahaha, DAHAHAHAHA!

And guess what? Lately, it's goin' real well!

And so everyone learned a valuable lesson. I guess.

Anyway, Throné ran away with this one, so we'll tackle her soon. But next time, we'll deal with another side story first.

Ahahahaha! My wife, she's a riot, I tell you! She knew I was just lookin' for some spare change to waste on partyin', so she let me have it!

Just the other day, I see Graham Crossford. I go over to him and I say "You know, Graham, they're doing amazing things with plastic surgery nowadays."

He says to me "That's great, buddy. Let me know how it turns out for ya."

Cute little side story. Was this only doable with Temenos in the party?

Any character with the power to acquire information from NPCs can do it. There's overlap in effects (as we've seen already with Temenos and Partitio both being able to recruit NPCs), but the methods will differ. For instance, Temenos can only Guide if he's at a high enough level, while Partitio can hire anyone with enough cash, but the really powerful effects might be too expensive for the moment.

So basically, if we had a different character with an interrogation-style ability, they would have been able to get the same jokes and accomplish the sidequest.

I took the octopath less travelered,

And it made one-eighth the difference.

Upon checking the world map after recruiting Partitio, you get access to three side quests specific to Partitio. They're all in towns we can't really get to right now due to the high level monsters, but they're a nice way to develop him and unlock some cool things later on. But that'll be on the backburner for now.

Flamechurch, Sacred Light

Since we have Partitio, we can go back to Flamechurch and tackle this side story.

Unfortunately, the path to the cathedral is poorly lit and dangerous for the unprepared, crawling as it is with petryifying creatures.

If only some patron would pick up some candles and put them at my disposal...

All we have to do is collect three candles from the various clerics in town. Simple enough.

Also this guy seems alright, at least.

Sure, we can just buy these and get it over with, but why do that right now?

First, let's take a trip to the Cathedral.

Fun fact, once we finish this side story these encounters go away forever. Since we can't fast travel to the cathedral, that will solve one minor annoyance.

I scour for a good person to hire to help me get discounts, and this is the best I could find in Flamechurch or Oresrush. 10% ain't much, but it's something.

Though honestly, the 10% discount is heavily outweighed by the hire cost, and the fact the cleric's main skill is redundant when our main character is also a cleric.

But if anyone asks, I'm doing this for the sake of the LP.

As I said in a previous update, these effects can vary. Some helpers give discounts at inns, some boost the amount of leaves you get when selling stuff, some boost the amount you gain from Collect, some discount Hired Help, and some even have a 1% chance to give you the item for free.

The best part is Partitio celebrating with a cleric on saving ten leaves on a beast liver.

I take this opportunity to buy status-healing herbs and cheap concoction ingredients, as they're crazy cheap and I can get some NPC dialogue to show off.

One of the clerics is at the cathedral entrance itself, so we had to come up here anyway. At least we can immediately fast travel back to Flamechurch!

Jam is the "Elixir" of OT, fully restoring your HP/SP and/or BP and/or Latent Gauge. There's several types of Jams, with this one just for BP/Latent. These can be incredibly useful late-game, especially once you start using a certain Divine Skill with them (among other ways...).

Of course, sometimes the items themselves tell a story, like how this librarian cleric is a caffeine addict.

And some items are just weird. This seems dumb, reducing two stats significantly with no upsides, but there will actually be a use for this!

Unsurprisingly, the local nutjob has some rather odd items for sale.

I'm sure we'll be back later to pick up that other item. That symbol to the left basically means "Item to complete a side story with". Easier to save buying them for when I'm actually doing the side stories so I can better show how to actually complete them.

More cheap shopping.

That's three candles! Let's turn them in and finish this one.

Perfect. This should be plenty to keep the peace. Once we put these candles in place, the pilgrimage will be covered by their protection!

At least we made back most of the money I invested for this side story.

I'm even considering making the pilgrimage myself. I haven't paid my respects there for quite some time.

Indeed, there are no longer encounters on this small path.

It's a minor thing, but hey, sometimes the small things are what's best.

That said, enough of this filler. Next time, we'll recruit Throné and get to know both her and the sprawling city of New Delsta.

This had better not involve 255 battles to uncurse

After a bit of experimentation, turns out that the grey "loop" arrow (the default way audio files open on your site) auto-loops the audio file. Clicking it so that it's blue turns off the loop.

Change both of these? Don't auto-loop and have the blue icon indicate the loop is on?

...

As per Partido's actual story:

1. What's his actual motivation and path? Obviously it's going to involve finding Roque and stoning him, but that's not the motivation he declared. Why is he joining our party \ having us join him?

2. Having the same guy as a mid-boss and final boss for the chapter is deeply narratively unsatisfying. No new dynamics, no particular worries about beating the guy we've already beaten before.

Learning about the contract or doing anything clever would have been better than just beating a random guy and making everything better.

I don't like it when you're watching me eat.
It seems a little odd to me that we spend $2500 on candles, to give them to a quest giver, who gives us $5000 as a reward. It would make a little more sense if we had to go buy the candles and then place them ourselves on the path, fighting monsters along the way. It really feels like what, exactly, did we bring to this quest? The dude had money, the clerics were freely selling the candles to anyone with money, the dude is not bed ridden, or already has someone else lined up to place the candles. It's an odd take on RPG NPCs are ineffective.

Alternatively:
Someone who is good with adventuring help. My pilgrim's path is overrun with random encounters.

Spend money on candles

No.
