The world congress poo poo is pretty bad flavor-wise and not executed well at all but I also don't really mind it because it is trivially easy to manipulate. Once you recognize the voting patterns the computer has you can win most votes so long as you have enough points to spend. I'm pretty turtle-y by nature so that's never a problem. It's pretty much always a backup wincon, I'll usually have double digit diplo victory points by the time the contests and "award 2 diplo points" votes start happening in the later game so pivoting to diplomacy is nearly always an option.

But I get people who really hate it, because it really is a poo poo mechanic all around.

One time I was in a meeting designing software, for a single facility, that kept track of which station a drill is currently at. Everyone, even the smart people, wanted this data stored in AWS and accessible via iphone and android mobile apps.

That's what I imagine the meetings coming up with the world council in VI felt like. I feel bad for my counterpart who had to endure them.

When the game first released, someone went through and googled "[name] quote" for a bunch of the techs and civics. The top result was almost always the one used in the game.

Yeah, is not a big problem, it was much worse in Civ 5 with every congress banning another luxury and all.

But its also not fun and a very dumb mechanic

The concept of the UN getting more powerful over time and eventually deciding who is in charge of the world/universe is a little bit of the 90s trapped forever in the amber of 4x game design mechanics.

And one from some rando blog. They knew it was from a blog, they just liked the funny quote. The fact that it was one of the first results on Google though is hilarious. Absolutely screams "intern that doesn't give a poo poo". And management just had quotes_(draft).txt printed out and handed directly to the audio studio for a famous person to commit to mp3 with absolutely no vetting.

I don't mind a funny quote but it's far far better when it comes from somebody famous. If Einstein had complained about the lack of WiFi on chichen itza that would have been hysterical. But Ned Nobody from Ned's Travel Blog doesn't carry that weight of comedy.

Rewinding a bit: Something that civ6 did great and we don't talk about enough and I'd like to see in the next title is Grievances. Just the whole thing of being able to take a city off some rear end in a top hat who wardecc'd you (or has otherwise been a PITA) is so very gratifying.

also the reverse was good, where baiting out a wardec that loses you nothing to take over a whole country isn't actually a thing people condone

Yea well leaving thorny IRL politics aside, it's a step in the right direction to having some to & fro with AI diplomacy in a video game. Wholesale stealing Amplitude's diplo system would be good, too!

I feel like the favour for promises/grievances thing could use some work, like surfacing that there’s even an option to ignore when stuff like promise to move troops/declare surprise war is thrown at you. 30 diplo for like several hundred grievances and the hatred of every other civ is also very annoying when in a religion game because every single action you do vaguely near a civ with that demand up dings it and someone will inevitably have the DF for it.

Civ 6 diplomacy has a lot I love. The grievances system is good, yeah, though it could be clearer to the player that just because you got wardecced doesn’t mean everyone is going to be okay when you annihilating them off the map.

Even though the implementation was janky, I do miss the civ 5 ideology system for shuffling up alliances and enemies late game. In all the other civs, including 6, you know who your rivals are going to be at end game by the time your people are casting their first metals. Civ 5 shook all that up, which I found fun.

I feel like if you combined the Stellaris Galactic Community where you get diplomatic “weight” to enact thing with Civ 6 diplomatic favor (adds weight) and grievances (lessens your weight) you’d get something cool

Steam has this little update/advert in the library to "Celebrate Julius Ceacer's birthday in Civ6!"... except the content still hasn't been added to the linux version (sad trombone noises).

I've always had a "slam-buy linux titles I care about to show them it's a market that pays for itself", but like, come on man. Tragically, it's not the first title that dropped multiplatform support after release and the sales where made. Well ok, I can still play the game, so it's not fully dropped. Just unsupported.

Lol, I had the dumbest 100 turn fuckup that ended up alright. So I'm playing Japan with Hojo Tokimune for a super high adjacency game. I spawn on a big coastal desert near Uluru and decide to go for Hermetic Order and get rewarded with a very dense group of Ley Lines near my capital, so I go for a Desert Folklore into Work Ethic religion game. Put all of my resources into getting a few desert cities going with terrible desert growth and am spared an early conquest when Scythia runs her entire army down trying and failing to take an allied city state due to bad terrain and strategic placement of my neutral military units.

I'm just trying to play it safe until I reach the second Secret Society level and unlock Chorus and my massive faith income starts getting turned Gold/Culture/Science.

Do you see where I hosed up yet? Yeah, I didn't until I put that second promotion on my secret society and my yields didn't go up massively :saddowns:

Luckily, I also hit a golden age and was able to poo poo out a 7 settlers thanks to Magnus and Monumentality, so I was able to just pivot into a standard super wide game with a lot of campuses and do a Science victory. But drat, I was so close to just rage restarting when I realized my fuckup

Chorus is a very useful ability that gives a whole smattering of bonus yields based on your faith income.

It is also exclusive to the Voidsingers secret society.

Just had a blast of a game on non-TSL earth with Phoenicia. Spawned in the eastern US and began assembling a massive Appalachian/Caribbean thalassocratic state with colonies in the British isles, France, and Indonesia. Weirdly Seondeok stayed in her lovely spawn location in the Yukon and Lautaro kept to Argentina/Chile and didn't get too mad at me for setting up cities in Colombia and Peru. I was worried Kupe might try to settle the west coast but his only cities were in NZ, central Alaska, and I guess that island that's supposed to be Sao Tome. Shifted my capital to the Yucatan peninsula for the insane yields and then accidentally got a culture victory on my way to science vic.

Currently playing a game as Mansa Musa which should end up being my highest-ever score. Ideal starting location—huge desert area with several oases and floodplains—and grabbed desert folklore and work ethic for pantheon/religious belief. Have totally negated MM’s production penalty, and can buy just about anything with faith or gold. Had back-to-back monumentality golden ages to spam settlers, then vaulted from a dark into a heroic age now. At 1,500 points in 1600, I’m thinking another thousand is very doable before the game ends. Never reached August Caesar tier before.

:wrong: Hermetic Order is great if you are playing a civ that has desert or plains preference, since you'll most likely spawn in an area with no mountain adjacency. And Ley Lines happen to spawn in areas with no other features, so it can turn a crappy continent into a powerhouse. Japan with Hermetic Order can get some absolutely game breaking adjacency bonuses.

100% of the time I take hermetic I throw myself under the bus founding cities in lovely places to get those adjacency bonuses, then half a lifetime later the second tier finally drops and I'm like... this building sucks, this was in no way worth it.

edit: I mean, it drat well struggles to be a positive sometimes with awkward city placement, when meanwhile the other societies have +1 econ slot, unkillable super-unit, and auto-win at religion.

Mansa Musa in a huge desert with Ley Lines surrounding a natural wonder is bonkers. Sure, you can get steamrolled in the first few eras.... but after that it's gravy

The three roles of APCs:
Transports.
Supply trucks.
Distractions.

One of my favourite multiplayer victories came just after Secret Societies came out, I picked Hermetic Order as the Dutch, and got some lovely leyline spawns next to rivers that helped power me forward.

They even got a buff since then (major adjacency bonus from leylines rather than standard) and I still think they're kinda underpowered compared with the other options.

I got this title for the dumbest fucking possible take on sea shanties. Specifically, I derailed the meme thread because sailors in the 18th century weren't woke enough for me, and you shouldn't sing sea shanties. In fact, don't have any fun ever.
Island plates map, iirc. Maybe a couple of the map types do that. Most of the map types are extremely hosed in various ways, with that one being the most obvious; I stick to continents and islands mostly for that reason.

Playing as Ambiorix at the moment.

He can snowball pretty amazingly. Starting unit is more powerful than Barbs so Barbs and getting stomped by an overzealous civ is unlikely (despite the bigger production cost). On top of that, you can get a Industrial Zone super early. You can't get adjacency bonuses from any of your zones, but ones you get all your Industrial Zones up and running, soon you start making GBS threads out wonders like they're normal buildings.

So you start off a bit slower, but end up snowballing so hard...
