This journal article (https://www.academia.edu/45535121/Wild_Colonial_Boy_Errol_Flynn_s_Rape_Trial_Pacific_Pasts_and_the_Making_of_Hollywood) provides the evidence from his own diaries:

quote:

According to My Wicked Wicked Ways, Flynn wasted little time commencing sexual relationships on arriving in New Guinea. When he took up a job operating a copra plantation in the hinterland of Kavieng, New Ireland, he supposedly found Maihiati while she was hiding in bushes after a raid from a rival tribe. Flynn wrote, ‘I beheld a pathetic creature, a girl, sitting there shaking, expecting to be killed. She was absolutely exhausted, petrified, and as she looked up at me there was a sort of supplication in her eyes, as if she anticipated death instantly’. He wanted her to return to Kavieng, he claimed, whereupon she had a suicidal ‘fit’. So Flynn permitted her to stay and be trained in the cookhouse where ‘this child became like a little puppy. She found my thatched house a haven, and I thought, Why not? Besides, she was so attractive’.

And another case:

quote:

After his return to this colonial world, Flynn had his last ‘romance’ during his time as a tobacco planter on the Laloki River, north of Port Moresby in the Territory of Papua. Laloki would become a mythic place for Flynn throughout the rest of his life; he would try to recreate it in the Jamaican estate he bought after his trial, or conjure it imaginatively. Part of Laloki’s charm was Tupersalai, the daughter of his ‘Boss Boy’, Allaman. From first seeing her, Flynn wrote, ‘I had to buy her. I had to have her … I had to have this downcast-eyed little woman or girl, whichever, for there is no such thing as age in New Guinea’. He bought her for two pigs, one fuse of English shillings and some seashell money. ‘She was absolutely beautiful, but at first sulky’, Flynn would recall. ‘I could see that she resented me very much. She had been sold into sexual slavery to me, for I knew that that was what it amounted to’, he acknowledged

Sounds bad IMO. In other news, episode 1 of season 3 of How To... with John Wilson (HBO) is pretty great. Nothing as insane as the heights of craziness in season 2 but this is just the first episode and there are plenty of laughs already. Highly recommended, and you can watch seasons 1 and 2 pretty fast if you haven't seen them, since the episodes are all short.

Y'know how shithead conservatives love to lump pedos in with lgbtq groups and communities?

Back in the 60's-70's quite a few gay and lesbian rights groups agreed. Pedophiles were an explicit part of the coalition. I think the last group kicked them out in the late 80's?

I guess a lot of people genuinely did not understand how damaging child sexual abuse can be.

It’s hard to understand now, but with the rapid changes in sexual mores after the 1950s many progressive thinkers viewed pedophilia as a legitimate sexual orientation that had wrongly been tarred as aberrant. This is a good—and horrifying—example of what this kind of thinking led to:

That was pretty much the only enjoyable part of the film, along with the gorgeous animation. But we were bored to tears watching it. When we left the theater, a couple people asked what we thought, and we were honest, it was boring.

"considered progressive at the time" is probably a better description

The 60s/70s were a bad time, for example Sweden had commercially sold magazines that contained child porn, which was legal at the time, which means the Swedish national library is forced to keep an archive of those magazines. At least they've started restricting who can read those magazines now.

Yes, exactly. I didn’t mean to suggest that these groups were progressive by today’s standards; merely that with the waves of progressive movements in the 60s/70s, when sexuality was being fundamentally reevaluated, there was a window in which a sort of anything-goes liberality emerged that lumped pedophilia (and in some cases bestiality) in with homosexuality, transgender identity, BDSM, etc.

Just watched it on the plane. Can confirm: it was boring.

Makes me hesitant to watch the new TMNT movie, which also has good reviews. Wonder if that means it is equally generic. I enjoyed all the lovely TMNT movies with bad reviews just fine.

(It was funny that Chris Pratt got all the initial casting hate when he was the only one making an effort in this movie. Everyone else was just talking normally!)

Yeah I hate all the "but it's meant for kids!" Arguments about how boring it is. As if we don't have like 30 straight years of solid animated flicks for all ages.

And also I'm really confused as to why they didn't make an effort to at least appeal to the original base.

That poo poo was formative for us in our 40s and I couldn't have been more bored out of my skull.

I watched it again last night and fell loving asleep.

Interestingly I was listening to the behind the scenes about the original movie and Nintendo sold it for $8m less than their original asking price because they thought those filmmakers had the best pitch and wanted something different.

It was way raunchier and darker all the way to near release when they had to secure more funding from Disney by way of Buena Vista. Then they had to cut a lot at the 11th hour.

Man I guess I'm just a sucker for animal drama, I loved GotG3, not quite as much as 1 but definitely more than 2. I'm a huge fan of the WE3 comic so that helps.

The only real complaint I have is that Adam Warlock seemed very tacked on, which from reading Gunn's commentary on the movie is 100% what happened

Yeah, that's how the holiday social was, too. I was hoping for something less... I don't know, aggressive?

I think that's why people liked Watership-Down-meets-Shawshank-Redemption so much: it was the exact opposite.

I don't think the movie successfully managed the balance of extremes it seemed to be going for.

It's bad but it's way better than any of the other stuff that marvel has been putting out. It was also weirdly disturbing and hard to watch in a way a PG 13 marvel movie shouldn't with the level of cruelty towards animals.

Goons gonna goon I guess, always jumping on a contrarian band wagon. Secret Invasion did indeed suck. But GOTG3 was the brightest part of the MCU since Endgame, and a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy. Also, they've been calling each other assholes and screaming at each other since the very first time they met in the first movie, it sounds like your memory of the movies isn't very accurate if you think their dynamic changed for the worse.
