e: Its my one big ole criticism with podcast as praxis. Surprise surprise - a vast majority of these people (assuming they cross a certain threshold of fame) end up just catering to the podcast itself, usually getting hosed up backstage in the process. It becomes a business. And they dont even pay well. At least the larger big corpo events I work pay more.

Both #1 and #3 have multiple obvious issues (and #2 probably has similar issues):
- Extremely high rates of prostate screening are not harmless, because they frequently find issues (cancer or otherwise) where treatment is more harmful than inaction. As a result, our high screening rates are actually often harmful and discouraged by many doctors, because a procedure like removing the prostate is often more harmful than whatever the issue is (but the patient might still want it done because CANCER, plus the doctor might worry about liability issues on the off-chance something goes wrong after it's technically diagnosed). Screening after 70 is particularly questionable, because even if someone has prostate cancer, it's not likely to be what kills them.
- US has higher cancer rates for most cancer types (or at least of detected cancers). This almost certainly fucks with the statistic, since it likely introduces more treatable cases relative to untreatable ones (most cancer is treatable, and it stands to reason that the stuff that goes undetected until a screening is usually relatively minor and more treatable).
- US has fewer really old people than Europe (largely because of our lovely healthcare system lol).

“I can only say probably,” Trump said when asked if he expects to face Biden in November 2024 in a rematch in the general election. “I mean, I watch him walking out of a helicopter. I watch him—just watch him. He can’t walk up a flight. He hasn’t gone down going down a flight but going up a flight he seems to have a problem. He can’t go up a flight of stairs. I think he’ll—I don’t know. Physically and mentally, I think his mental is worse than his physical if you want to know the truth.”

I was on break during one of these shows I worked, and was striking up convos with the guests (people who pay to see the show) outside. I was fronting this line of question, trying to agitate on the efficacy of this whole thing. The general reply I got was "well you know, its nice to just hear stuff I like."

I mean, this is drat near verbatim. By the time I got out of the bar/venue side of my craft, I realized the entire thing is just church. Which is fine if you just want some moment of spiritual fulfillment and joy, but Just dont lie to yourself in thinking its the beginning of a sincere movement. It isnt. I can type a whole essay on the church angle.

There are rare times when people on stage, and these were usually guests brought in, would actually advocate for specific movements/groups to join and programs to help out with. Most couldnt even be bothered to tell you to join DSA or whatever org du jour. At my least cynical I'd hope these places enabled a couple of strangers to meet and then go off to "do something". Most times though the same faces would show up and just get hammered and hootnholler. You were correct in feeling detached.

Tsitsikovas posted:

good on em, this is the way it aught to be. Its just entertainment. I'd give props to John stewart in the 00s for insisting hes just a dopey comedian but then he did that whole rally for sanity or whatever that was supposed to be. so. yknow. sometimes this poo poo gets to people's heads lol. The power of being on stage and having hundreds of people really enjoy everything youre saying is very, very potent. Again, church. Or more specifically, poo poo like the five star movement.

I think its worth analyzing and criticizing considering how much fame and celebrity is politics these days. Plenty of historical examples too, yes, but given what it means "to be political" today, its something worth reiterating. The dems entire MO is pushing various cults of personality. Whatever material things are proffered (or half assedly given lip service to) dont matter because theyll just keep contorting the facts until we get to their desired truths (eg biden is great, eggs are luxe, go gently caress yourself and vote). The line between "this is fun" and "this is real politics" is very fine, so just know which side of the line youre working in. As a consumer and as a producer.

The church angle is interesting, thank you.

What the hell happened in Chinese agriculture from 2000-2010? Is this like a stats methodology or data thing, or did all their ag collapse and then 10 years later just rebounded overnight as though nothing happened?
