Popular history tends to hand-wave away how much of a close-run thing WWI was right up until America infused the Western Front with a couple million more men to throw away, and even then the armistice was signed without the Entente ever marching on Germany (with some fairly strong repercussions later on) because asking the armies to keep on fighting for however many months it took to break across the Rhine would have been a strain on societal cohesion and army morale
