Jeremy Renner is always just kind of there and never really brings anything to any movie I've seen. His bit part in The Assassinaton of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is the only time where it seemed like he was acting a little.

I thought he was pretty good in Hurt Locker but yes he is otherwise the human equivalent of beige wallpaper

French Connection, To Live and Die in L.A., and Killer Joe are also 5 star goats. For lesser known ones, Rampage is pretty wild.

Do not trust in hope- it will betray you! Only faith and hatred sustain.

Huh apparently he finished directing a remake of the Caine Mutiny, which on the one hand has Kiefer Sutherland as Queeg and Lance Reddick (rip) as the lawyer, but on the other updates the setting to the modern war on terror which is gonna make it either completely different or incredibly stupid

indigi posted:

there are a lot of shows and movies that make use of gratuitous and excessive needle drops lately. it's especially noticeable in stuff that isn't set in a certain time and/or place that use popular songs to make up for a weak script and press the audience's nostalgia button to trick us into liking it. but even when a movie is located very specifically it can feel intrusive and out of place, like Air or GotG2 (which isn't set in the 80s, but it's an important [arguably the only] part of characterization for Starlord)

I have two recent examples of media that also does this, but I think it works: the first is the Apple series Afterparty, which is set at a class of 2006 high school reunion and has several scenes flashing back to a high school party in 2006. the music is kind of necessary to these parties, it'd be weird for there to be no music. so while I could see someone arguing they go to that well too much, I feel like it's an effective tool to establish the world and ground the plot

the other example is Transformers Beast Wars, it exclusively uses early 90s NYC rap which has an unbreakable hold on my heart and it fuckin bangs every time idc idc kick their rear end Prime

e: I guess they use a new track at the end but it's Nas so spiritually it counts

If you didn't cite Air, I was gonna say Air did this a lot. They just had shots of office parks that could have been at any time, so they just throw in a song to give it a sense of place and time. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood felt like a boomer mood piece because they just had him cruising along in his car listening to 60s rock.

College Slice
I thought a "needle drop" was when a show did some type of surprise revelation and it momentarily got super quiet and then you had one of those "You probably wonder how I got here" type scenes. Have I been taught all wrong?

Needle drops as discussed ITT are usually really jarring ones, like Sound of Silence or Hallelujah in Watchmen. Popular music in movies can often be used to great effect, like Sound of Silence in The Graduate or Hallelujah in Shrek

Here's to the new us.
Most needle drops are bad because they're just pulling from Top 40 hits and cramming them in there. I just finished watching Ghosted (which is a thoroughly mediocre movie) and it was just flinging the most random poo poo in there, like My Sharona over a fight scene in a bus.
