The media remote is okay-looking, and I may pick it up, but I like remotes with dedicated audio and subtitle buttons. I guess the pop up menu works fine for most use cases though and at least it has dedicated pause buttons and what-have-you but it feels a little silly since on first glance it doesn't do anything the normal controller doesn't do outside of app buttons I won't use.

What the gently caress is even the point of making a remote if you need to use the pop up. We had this poo poo sorted out with the PS3 17 years ago. Cheap assholes

Sorry, I'm quite busy at the moment.
R.I.P. to a real one.

quote:

If I want to watch the old version or the new version of The Exorcist, they are both on DVD.

William Friedkin: But I cleaned both versions up. There is no version of that on DVD that hasn't been cleaned. Or adapted to the new medium. Whether it be DVD or Blu-ray. The only lousy versions of it are the old VHS copies. Because VHS loses color. The magnetic tape fades. We don't know how long these DVDs or Blu-rays will last.

According to Oliver Stone, they are only supposed to last ten years.

William Friedkin: How the gently caress does he know?

I don't know. But I think that's pretty funny. Seriously, ten years is what he said.

William Friedkin: He is full of poo poo. Has anyone been able to prove that yet? Where's the proof?

I have DVD's that are ten years old now. I have DVDs from 1999 or 98. They still work just fine.

William Friedkin: I'm sure they do if you have a good play back machine and a reasonably good television set. Or a good monitor. How does he know they last ten years?

I think at the time he said that, he didn't want people to buy Alexander on DVD.

William Friedkin: gently caress him and Alexander. Guess how long a print of Alexander lasts? I bet you can't see a good print of it now. You can't see a good print of anything. Even the revival houses don't get a new print made from digital. They run the best print that exists. The other night I watched one of my favorite films. I don't know if you ever heard of it. Its called Diabolique. H.G. Clouzot directed it. I watched that. It was a Criterion release. Fantastic! It is a black and white movie. The blacks are blacker. The whites are whiter. All of the scenes are richer. The sound is better. It has been cleaned up. And digitized. You hear details you never heard before. It's a pleasure to watch. And you're not watching it through a curtain of dirt and scratches, and noise. I love the new medium. Especially Blu-ray. I don't know what's next.

It's 3D in the homes.

William Friedkin: gently caress 3D! The Blu-ray is the real cinematech of world cinema. That's how it's being preserved. All of these guys that are trying to preserve 35mm negatives? They are wasting their time. There are better ways to see and project this stuff now. It's called digital. Everything that is made today is made that way. In a few years, I don't know how many, I'm not a prognosticator like Oliver Stone, who I happen to like, by the way...But an announcement like, "It's only going to last ten years!" He doesn't know his rear end from left field. Nobody does. We don't know how long this stuff will last. But we know that before it goes out of style, there will be some new thing to replace it. There will be some little disc the size of a quarter that will give you the best looking image imaginable.

Netflix on-line. It hooks into your game consol, and you can call up thousands and thousands of movies instantly.

William Friedkin: Right! I have that now. Pay-Per-View.

You can even get Pay-Per-View HD.

William Friedkin: It is Pay-Per-View HD. We have it on a huge screen. I run that on a movie screen that I have. We run 35 still. We run new films in 35. But most of the time I sit there in front of a big screen, and I look at the films that I love from the past. And I see and hear them better than I ever was able to in the past.

Honestly this might be too specific but is there a player out there that can do 4K UHD with full backwards compatibility to DVD, even burned ones, and has a fully-featured remote? I'm not even needing the best of the best video or audio as long as it plays nice. Preference would be one that doesn't require an Internet connection or streaming apps as well but who knows if that exists nowadays.

Growing up I owned the first three Homestar Runner Strong Bad Email DVDs as well as a bunch of anime and being able to easily toggle subs, angles/easter eggs, and audio tracks was magical and I'm just looking for something modern that can do that without having to mess with OSDs or pop-up menus if possible. I was looking at the LG UBK80 because again I don't need anything that'll set the world in fire but even that remote looks paltry.

I was also talking about it all the time, spreading the word, and nagged Dickeye (FREE DICKEYE) until she played it during one of her streams which a whole bunch of the regulars here saw. So I'm pretty sure if I'm not the whole reason it became a favorite here I certainly have a lot to do with it. I was actually delighted when people started seeing and talking about it. I never would have dreamed the original cut would be located and released on blu-ray, much less UHD.

Casimir Radon posted:

You have to remember that one of the hooks with was that they found and restored all the R-rated material that had been cut out at the last minute, and hadn’t been seen before.

The movie itself was only released once on VHS and the uncut version was only released on tape as well in Germany with a dub. The PG-13 version was already an odd curio because it was quite obviously edited from a more mature (using the word loosely) film and marketed as a kid's movie. Even in the its edited version I would hardly say it's for kids. And of course the numerous cuts made a bunch of poo poo in the movie seem nonsensical. So that backstory alone made it worth watching. Having seen the intended version of the movie it becomes clear that they knew exactly what they were making and it actually goes from being a hilariously bizarre mess to an genuinely good campy horror comedy.

Surviving the Game when?

I hate to be That Guy but archivists largely agree that film is a better medium to use for archival purposes because it can last indefinitely if stored and handled properly. Digital storage can be an issue because the technology progresses very quickly and now you have old storage formats that are not compatible with new tech. Basically imagine someone giving you files on a floppy disc and all you have is a brand new Mac Book. The digital files can also become corrupted. A major concern of archivists is actually that most films today are shot and projected digitally thus making it impossible (or at least very difficult) to store physical copies of.

I think Friedkin was talking about color prints. My understanding of archiving is that they exclusively use black and white film, which is a totally different process from color and is very robust. Color movies are stored on three separate copies using filters (I don’t know if they literally use red/green/blue but you get the idea).

That’s not exactly something you can just pull out of the can and just start projecting.

I didn't know that. Either way, digital archiving is hardly perfect. Seems better as a short term rather than a long term solution.

Yeah, for sure, with digital studio backups for movies you need “live” backups that are constantly upgraded to newer file formats. You don’t want to get stuck with a movie that can only be opened by an ancient version of an editing package (which you probably can’t get running anyway since licensing all seems to be subscription based now). However, every time you upgrade versions something might break in the file…

The rule for archiving in general is many copies, many formats, more is better. You want redundancy in case anything happens to a storage location or a media format loses support or whatever.

The Sting UHD has been out for a few years now.

It's an interesting one. At times it looks great, but the movie has so many of those goofy optical transition shots that you end up with quite a lot of softer shots at the end of a scene or the beginning of a new one as the optical effects kick in.

I rewatched it a few weeks ago and honestly it's way better than I expected/remembered. The character themselves is rarely if ever shown in a offensive way except for one point where some characters are being monsters to him and one where Jackie Chan's character slaps the hell out of Sammo, both of which are not shown as good things. So, not great in a few moments but I think it's an alright portrayal that mostly focuses on how Sammo's character isn't a burden, he's family, and I think I'd lean towards it being a decent to good portrayal of a developmentally disabled character overall. I think the worst thing he's called is fatso.

One of my cinematography mentors worked with Owen once long ago, and--upon telling him what Owen said about the new French Connection transfer--said something along the lines of "Yeah, that sounds like Owen.
