some interesting and unfortunate crossover... a Turkish company is not paying its workers in Tanzania

quote:

enr250 (world's top 250 international contractors-2022) list indicates that yapı merkezi, which is turkey's 3rd largest construction company, had a grave incident in its railway project in tanzania.

while tanzanian workers are receiving their salaries on time, turkish workers haven't been paid since january. there are around 1600 turkish workers in total. additionally, about 700 workers who resigned haven't been compensated. in total, there are around 2300 victims. the same company's other overseas sites pay on time.

those who leave the job face deductions ranging from $1600 to $5000 (for ticket expenses, translation expenses, visa fees, etc.). on top of that, those who resign are not paid for months. the precondition for an out-of-court settlement through mediation was unlawfully removed. the company's headquarters aren't responding to calls. they've closed comments on posts on their social media accounts like linkedin and twitter. the consulate isn't taking any action. due to these conditions, employees can't even resign.

the workers can't endure any longer; many can't bring bread to their home, buy diapers for their children, or care for their sick. their homes are on the brink of falling apart. none of these are exaggerations; I am there myself.

we want our voices to be heard. when it was announced that there would be no salary in august, a work stoppage protest began. all workers united. our demand is to get 4 months of salary within august and regular salaries afterward. we're willing to let two months' wages remain unpaid. in response to our demands, the initial statement said that one month's salary would be paid in two installments in august, but the subsequent months are uncertain.

when organizations and media outlets like tip emek, dev yapı-iş union, halk tv, ulusal tv, and various social media accounts began supporting our protest and raising our voices, the company offered to pay two months' salary in august and the remaining salaries up to december. however, whether they will pay salaries from august to december is still uncertain.

the same company, when salaries were delayed by two months at the togg construction site and the issue was publicized, falsely advertised as if they had solved a problem that stemmed from a subcontractor (in the mentioned news, you'll see that you can't comment on the twitter post). when it comes to people like us, who are 5000km away and can't make their voices heard, they pile on the pressure.

of course, there are sanctions against those participating in the protests and spreading the word on social media. in the first protest video, the boss personally called and informed a speaking colleague that he was fired. likely, after they learn I wrote this on ekşi, they'll call and fire me too. but it's okay. let the voices of our remaining colleagues be heard.

we won't step back until we receive 4 months of salary, but it's crucial for us to stay in the spotlight until we get our rights. that's why we ask for your support. please help us. social media is our most potent weapon. we know this, but we don't always get a chance to access it from here. to amplify our voices, we need you. support on twitter with #yapimerkezi, repost the company's posts on linkedin and comment, send emails to the consulate: embassy.daressalaam@mfa.gov.tr, help to keep this topic trending.

thank you all in advance.
together, towards better days!

"Western" intervention will lead to widespread west Africa destabilization. The pillaging and plundering by France and the USA must continue at any cost. Any cost. Tens of millions more refugees will go to Europe.

It will be hailed as restoring the democratic order, which is basically a synonym for restoring profitability to certain USA friendly private monetary interests.

It will all seem eerily familiar. Cue twilight zone music, fade to black.

UK announces deal with Turkey to tackle illegal migration

www.turkishminute.com posted:

The UK has announced a deal with Turkey to enhance cooperation on tackling illegal migration, which includes a new operational “center of excellence” to be established by the Turkish National Police, Agence France-Presse reported.

London announced the plan late Tuesday as part of its attempts to reduce illegal migration to the UK, a key political issue.

The new UK-backed center will “enrich existing expertise in both countries with respect to activities aimed at disrupting criminal networks organizing illegal journeys”, according to a statement from the interior ministry.

The UK will also deploy more officers in Turkey to disrupt the criminal gangs who run the illegal migration routes.

The two countries reiterated their commitment to work together to tackle the problem and to strengthen cooperation with countries of origin and transit.

The UK government is under particular pressure to stop migrants making illegal crossings of the Channel.

“As I’ve made clear, we must do everything we can to smash the people smuggling gangs and stop the boats,” said interior minister Suella Braverman as her department announced the deal.

“Our partnership with Turkey, a close friend and ally, will enable our law enforcement agencies to work together on this international problem and tackle the small boat supply chain,” she added.

The new plan will feature heavily at the upcoming UK-Turkey Migration Dialogue meeting, due to take place in London later this year.

https://www.sowetanlive.co.za/news/south-africa/2023-08-10-watch-british-doctor-one-of-five-killed-since-taxi-strike-started-in-cape-town/

Minibus taxis, seen in the article above, make up the bulk of transportation in south Africa, thanks to apartheid spatial planning.

The city of Cape town amended a bylaw that allowed them to start impounding taxi's (which are managed by private companies). The taxi drivers were not happy about this, so they started striking. And when they strike, they mean it. The majority of Cape town workers live in poor townships and cannot get to work for the past week now.

The city of Cape town has responded by shouting Law And Order and impounding taxi's some more.

Places are running out of groceries and medicine here so I hope reason prevails.

this is interesting. has the world bank cited its values while dealing with a country before?
World Bank Halts New Lending to Uganda Over Anti-LGBTQ Law

www.usnews.com posted:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The World Bank said on Tuesday it would halt new lending to the Ugandan government after concluding that its anti-LGBTQ law, which has been condemned by many countries and the United Nations, contradicts the bank's values.

In response, the East African country dismissed the move as unjust and hypocritical.

A World Bank team traveled to Uganda immediately after the law was enacted in May and determined that additional measures were needed to ensure projects were being implemented in line with the bank's environmental and social standards.

"No new public financing to Uganda will be presented to our Board of Executive Directors until the efficacy of the additional measures has been tested," the bank said in a statement, adding that such measures were now under discussion with Ugandan authorities.

"Uganda's Anti-Homosexuality Act fundamentally contradicts the World Bank Group's values. We believe our vision to eradicate poverty on a livable planet can only succeed if it includes everyone irrespective of race, gender, or sexuality," the bank said.

"We remain committed to helping all Ugandans - without exception - escape poverty, access vital services, and improve their lives."

World Bank President Ajay Banga, who took office in June after the Ugandan law was enacted, has come under pressure to respond to the Ugandan law. On June 15, 170 civic groups urged Banga to take "specific, concrete and timely actions" in response to the Uganda anti-LGBTQ law, including suspending future lending.

Uganda's state minister for foreign affairs, Okello Oryem accused the bank of hypocrisy, saying they were lending to countries in the Middle East and Asia that have the same or harsher laws on homosexuality.

"There are many Middle East countries who do not tolerate homosexuals, they actually hang and execute homosexuals, in the United States of America many states have passed laws that are either against or restrict activities of homosexuality ... so why pick on Uganda?" he said.

"The World Bank has been put under pressure by the usual imperialists."

The World Bank had provided $5.4 billion in International Development Association financing to Uganda by the end of 2022, including many health and education projects that could be affected by the new law.

The existing portfolio will continue to disburse funds, even as new lending is put on hold, a World Bank source said.

Private sector projects backed by the International Finance Corporation and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) would proceed only "on a selective basis," the bank said in a separate note to staff seen by Reuters.

It said the IFC and MIGA would also implement additional measures to "ensure inclusion and non-discrimination as needed."

God dammit, I have to watch this, because I saw some of it happen myself.

I got Phumzile Van Damme (former member of the opposition party) to follow me on twitter. She seemed to respond well to anti-colonial and anti-racist takes, despite her strong lib tendency. Then she founded this "anti-misinformation" think tank.

https://www.timeslive.co.za/news/so...n-on-fake-news/

A bit later in 2022/23, she suddenly started focusing heavily on Russian influence and misinformation in Africa. I would prod her about the the fact that she doesn't seem to do the same for European and American Imperialism in Africa. Shortly thereafter, she went to Washington and got an award from Anthony Blinken and attended an event with Hillary. I made a tweet about how disappointed I was, that her sudden focus on Russia made a lot of sense now, and she blocked me immediately.

I gotta say, it sucks to see the USA scoop up your local influential people and dig their claws in. It feels suddenly very real, and very surreal, and scary. Colour revolutions happen "over there", not in my own country.

But of course, eventually that's no longer true.
