I showed my blu ray on a 85” TV and cannot stress how true this sentiment is. Some of the later far back shots are ok but the giant wasps and closer stuff looked terrible. I think the B&W helped, almost gave it a classic creature feature camp vibe, but I shudder to imagine how awful the color version would have looked.

More definition is not our friend in this case, I may downgrade to DVD.

On the plus that's the last thing that movie is about all things considered and the least important in a sense. I rewatched the ending just now, and it made me remember while I thought it was kinda over the top, I appreciated it had the balls to do it and lionsgate stuff isn't priced badly, even if this is a 4 disc set according to the cover art. Fine FRANK, you win, I'll buy it.

It helps the cgi for sure but I think overall the movie just looks better in black and white. Plus that's how Darabont wanted it released in theaters but the studio said no.

I believe the North American rights to The Hitcher are with Warner Bros., so that could come from them directly, Warner Archive, or more likely Scream Factory.

Worth noting the 4K restoration was done by 3-D Film Archive several years ago for theatrical DCP and Blu-ray, including a restoration of the original 3-track stereo soundtrack. The Blu-ray will have both 2D and 3D versions, while the UHD is obviously 2D only.

I like it, it looks like some goosebumps poo poo. The standard cover is still cooler, but I already have a few of these best buy exclusive slipcover lionsgate releases so what's one more.

If you just get the standard, so far all the lionsgate stuff has dropped to 16ish from 20+ if you wait a little. See: belly, res dogs..I don't think this movie is super popular, I can see it hitting sales to move units.

e: also bluray.com says it's a 2k upscale, which doesn't make sense to me, it was shot on 35mm. So they are just uprezzing the 2k DI? Kinda hoping they'd scan the negative and just upscale the VFX elements, but that requires actual effort.

the uk steel for the blu is kinda rad:

Honestly, knowing it's an upscale I would wait on reviews if you already have the blu..assuming the blu was a good transfer. Lionsgate has been good so far, but I don't think this is one of those things where you're going to see a huge difference outside of the bigger color/contrast dynamic range of HDR. I don't own any version of this, and it's not exactly known for groundbreaking cinematography or anything, so I'm good with it but YMMV

Yea The Mist is a movie that I'd like to add to my collection at some point just because it's a neat monster flick with some good characters and solid acting. But I wouldn't expect it to have the wow factor that we look for when we're debating whether to double dip and upgrade a blu to UHD. If it had more practical effects then maybe it would but those 2007 effects definitely seem like they'd hold it back from being top tier UHD.

So it's one of those conversations where the decision is totally different depending on whether you already own the blu ray. Because I'm sure the UHD will be the best version of the film to own but maybe not by such a wide margin that it's worth $20 to upgrade. We'll see.

Last I checked the blu-ray was going for silly money. So even if this new disc doesn't have some wow factor that makes it worth a double dip it's good for anyone who didn't manage to get a copy before. Though I suppose they're about to be cheap now.

The OG poster is under that weird rear end slipcover, so just toss that in the trash. 50/50 most people don't even get a copy with one down the line anyway and ever have to see that thing.

Yea my Shout Factory From Beyond blu ray was worth a few hundred bucks before that Vinegar Syndrome UHD came out. I guess I should've sold it before the market cratered but I just didn't want to not have a copy of From Beyond on hand so I never did.

I just can't imagine why anyone would pay that much for a movie. Any movie. Collector's markets are really loving dumb. I have the first issue Shout Vincent Price set and that was up to about 200 bucks before they reissued it but I didn't want to see mine when I still had the window and knew they were reissuing it. The first release has these cool intro/outros one most of the movies that Vincent Price did for a PBS station in the 80s. They couldn't secure the rights the second time around so the newer set doesn't have that. I've noticed that more and more anything that isn't owned by Disney just pops up from some other label a bit later after one of them puts it out of print. So barring Fox titles I don't really pay these things much mind. I really regret not picking up Freaked when that was readily available.

I think it just wasn't that obvious, even as recently as 7 or 8 years ago, that all of these relatively obscure B-movies would be on a constant rotation of being picked up by small labels for blu ray/UHD releases. Like when Shout Factory put out From Beyond in 2013, it kinda felt like that might be it for From Beyond. There didn't seem to be any other release coming on the horizon, the Shout Factory blu went out of print, and Shout Factory was really the only label out there that seemed likely to release something like From Beyond.

JERRY! HELLO!

Yeah I won't pay an outrageous price for something that's OOP, nowadays. Though I did snag Dutch on blu ray a few years ago for 35$, and checking eBay it goes for more than double that. I ain't selling though. Love that movie.

No one is re-releasing a 1991 Ed O'Neill road comedy, so I was okay with spending a bit more on it.

The most I ever paid for a movie was for the Euro Phantom of the Paradise blu-ray which was just under 50 bucks shipped from France. It was going OOP and at the time it looked like no one was going to pick that up (as Basebf555) noted about ye olden days. That was the only release of it to date. Then less than a year later Shout announced their edition. Womp Womp. Other than that my top shelf has been 35 bucks if it's a single movie and even then it's rare. I find a lot of good poo poo at Savers believe it or not and I generally stick to sales. Back when FYE was still a thing they frequently had a lot of cool genre films for under 15 bucks. It just takes patience and keeping your eyes open to get OOP stuff cheap. I got Near Dark for two bucks in a video game store. And great deal of in print stuff is pretty cheap new or used.

I recently watched Days of Heaven for the first time, *then* learned the Criterion was OOP. I waffled about buying it OOP for "my collection" but then I just bought the Paramount blu-ray for $11 from Barnes and Noble. It's got to get a proper 4K release at some point, right? That would at least be one I wouldn't have to feel guilty about upgrading... 😁

Days of Heaven definitely seems like an obvious choice for a Criterion UHD.

It occurs to me that Malick in general hasn't really been a part of the UHD conversation up to this point. I wonder if he's one of those directors who just doesn't have interest in the format, because on the face of it he seems like a great candidate for it. Badlands, Days of Heaven, The Thin Red Line and The New World would all be exciting UHDs.

Don't worry guys, I just bought a used DVD copy of Oldboy and a new copy of Wild Zero, so the US-region Arrow release of the former and the long-awaited boutique edition of the latter are going to be out any day now.

I think my most deranged "yeah I'll probably pick this up at some point" is a region 1 DVD of I'm A Cyborg But That's Ok. I don't have it yet but I stare at it on my wishlist every so often despite the $60 used price tag.

When I get my region free player I may just import since I think a Blu-Ray from the UK exists and just get a nice custom case or something.

I've beat this drum before but it really drives me crazy how the early 2000s were such a good time for getting recent Asian movies on DVD in America, and none of the new boutique bluray labels fill that niche. So many fantastic movies from the 90s and 2000s trapped on out of print DVDs, and god knows how many great new movies that don't get anything.

Right?? That's something that struck me as I put together my "get a physical of all my favorite movies" project. I was amazed that Death Note and The Last Name got a dual pack BD release but I know that's only because they were based on manga. Wild Zero is still in print but it's only on DVD, I'm A Cyborg But That's Ok doesn't have a region 1 BD and the DVD is out of print. Oldboy has the UK Arrow release but only the Tartan Asia Extreme DVD if you want region 1. Ace Attorney never got a US physical at all so I had to make that one custom. There's a huge untapped market for some great movies that just isn't really being served. I'd kill for Tokyo Tribe in a format that isn't a $144 Blu Ray, or any official release of Antiporno.
