I strongly doubt anyone is going to get paid again, and if they do, it’ll be once again at Elon’s whims, no actual metrics will be used. In fact I strongly suspect any metrics thrown around Twitter/X are entirely fabricated, either by Elon himself or by three levels below him on the Yes Men ladder.

At this point the only thing Twitter can be benefitted by is ad revenue, which they won’t get by embeds here.

Like don’t get me wrong I’m all for reducing Twitter’s influence at this point but this is the Twitter thread.

Do I have this right? Twitter has to pay for the traffic outwards but doesn't get to claim it for ad revenue because no ads can be served?

On the subject of Tesla jobs I actually had a job offer from them ten years ago. I didn't take it as the salary was mediocre and even back then, Musk companies were renowned for being awful places to work specifically because of him, but I do know a few people who did take offers and lasted exactly one year (which is how long it takes for your first "Tesla RSUs" to vest). One mentioned Musk personally threatening to fire them daily for that year.

You view the site which counts as unregretted user-seconds and elmo then sells ads based on that metric

This weird saga has really changed my perspective on centralized social media. I used to feel like all the fediverse stuff was noble in its intentions but too cumbersome and impractical to scale up. Now I think it's the only sensible structure for social media.

Rate limits and account walling, fear tactics regarding brand impersonation, usernames being confiscated, unwanted associations with the changing culture and content ... it's all shown that whether you're an indie artist or a megacorp, you're not truly in control of your presence on someone else's platform.

And I'm totally guilty of falling into the thinking that in order to protect my brand, I needed to secure every variant of name on every major site. I'm happy to have been broken of that. It's freeing to accept that you don't need to be everywhere, and that impersonators on a platform you don't even care to use simply aren't worth worrying about.

That's my personal solution for as long as the current landscape remains. But I do have hope for the way that decentralization and federation could revamp account creation and verification across social media. Let domain names serve as the first and last arbiters of who's who on the internet, with brands carrying theirs everywhere they go, and implicitly verifying their absence everywhere they don't go.

Of all the ways I expected Twitter to die —

- Catastrophic and unrecoverable crash within weeks of Elon taking over
- Slow degradation of features or service until it becomes unusable
- Total overhaul of the site according to Elon's whims such that it no longer resembles Twitter in any way

I don't think "he lets CSAM and Nazis take the gently caress over and cheers them on and everybody with a conscience leaves" would have been one of my top guesses

If you can tell that a note changes, goes up/down after the previous one, then you arnt tone deaf. You don't need to be able to identify the note, just 'has this note changed'

This feels like overly literal rules-lawyering about what does and does not technically constitute tone deafness. You know what people mean when they say it.

I tend to say exactly what kru said to people who say "I'm tone deaf" because it's always the thing they say after "I've always wanted to play [instrument] but.."

There are very few people who are actually tone deaf, and probably the same number of people who are born with intrinsic (no instructions needed) music ability.

The rest is just education & practice. That's it. That's no magic to it.

TBH I'm blindly replying to your comment without scrolling up to understand the context :imunfunny:

My sister says she's tone deaf but it's actually a complete and utter lack of rhythm to the point that see couldn't even finish the Rock Band Basic Drums tutorial. Yet she can play a recorder song albeit slowly and still knows if she's played the wrong note (Do schools still shove learning Recorders at kids?).
She's not the only person I know that says they're 'tone deaf' but it's just they don't know how to play an instrument or have jank rhythm.

it's one of the major ways humans preserve information and, in particular ,preserve it in a way that can be tested for accuracy of recall. several people who know a similar piece can get together and communally recite it to re-establish accuracy. interestingly that's essentially the same way that oral traditions or cultures without writing preserve information for thousands of years. human capacity for accurate recall is honestly incredible when cultivated.
