I'm really looking forward to hearing how this turns out. 1989 is so much heavier on Obvious Production Choices than the albums she's re-recorded so far, and both Wildest Dreams tv and This Love tv sounded fairly different from the originals. Maybe Bad Blood tv will be tolerable??

My secret dream is that GUTS pulls a Melodrama where it’s head and shoulders above its predecessor but for whatever reason leaves the mainstream just enough that Olivia never gets to the Arena Tour tier and keeps doing shows in places I like for as long as she makes music

Although imo Sour is better than Pure Heroine

I'm just amazed at how fast Olivia got to authenticity. Miley and Selena had to spend a few years making safe-rear end teen pop albums that worked as brand extensions of Hannah Montana/Wizards of Waverly Place before they could really start doing interesting things (Miley by getting naked and twerking, Selena by leaning into the Latin angle). Olivia straight up got to put an F-bomb in her first major hit, right out of the gate.

She pulled a Hailee Steinfeld, whose first major hit was about masturbation.

I listened to Flamboyant by Dorian Electra for the first time and I love the vocal effects. Could anyone recommend artists that use that same type of effect? I'm out of my element here so I don't know how to articulate myself well.

Something like this :). E: At 2:00 is specifically what I'm thinking of. I wouldn't want a whole song/album like that ha, but I'm really interested in more pop music that has a warped/flangey(???) sound.

Carly shook her glass, willing the ice to melt. "You still haven't told me what the mission is."

She leaned forward. "We are going to assassinate the bad men of Hollywood."

Caroline Polachek, The Japanese House, and mother Imogen Heap herself make use of heavy vocal processing effects not just as an aesthetic choice but as a regular instrument unto itself.

WOW!!! I rarely listen to pop (for no particular reason) and Caroline's newest album gave me an "I forgot how much I love music" moment. Thank you for the recommendation! I'll check out those other two tomorrow and start trolling through this thread for other artists and links.

I usually only listen to full albums and not songs. Are there any staple albums that have come out in the last 5-8 years I should check out to keep this pop ball rolling? I didn't realize how much I've been missing out on an entire genre.

A bit more hardcore but I would recommend SOPHIE's album, who basically inspired Caroline and all these other people back in the day. RIP

There have been 7 Lana Del Rey albums in the past 8 years, all but 2 of them double lps.

Norman loving Rockwell is the LDR album to listen to, then Chemtrails Over The Country Club if you still want to listen to her afterward.

Here's some more stuff I love, I've put some vague genretags but "genre" is iffy bullshit so YMMV anyway:

Future Nostalgia - Dua Lipa (disco pop)
Dedicated - Carly Rae Jepsen (dance pop/disco pop) (actually just go listen to everything she's done from E MO TION onward)
St Vincent - Masseduction (electropop)
Grimes - Art Angels (electropop) (if you can overlook her personality I swear the music is good)
Robyn - Honey (electropop/dancepop)
Lady Gaga - Chromatica (electropop/dancepop)
Marina - Froot (electropop/dancepop)
Paramore - After Laughter (pop rock/synthpop)
Kesha - Rainbow (pop rock)
Muna - Muna (indie pop)
100 gecs - 10,000 gecs (hyperpop/experimental pop)
Beyoncé - Lemonade (R&B)
Kacey Musgraves - Golden Hour (country pop)

I'm stopping myself here (I went back and added like four more albums after typing that) but I've only scrolled through like a third of my spotify library so let us know what you're enjoying and we can find more, I've got a bunch more I could throw out from the more distant stuff towards the bottom of my list.

guts is bad because I can only hear two songs and therefore it's only 40% as good as any other album on the list.

Should've mentioned SOUR though you're 100% correct.
