This is ridiculous; it's such an obvious target, you think the Russians would at some point move it. Keeping the bridge in the same place makes it an easy target.

Cities famously act as, well, cities, during war, even during siege. People have to act as people, including entertainment, or the morale effects cascade. One role of city administration during war is to prevent those detrimental morale effects. It is an affirmation to continue to embrace normal life, and in effect, is a brave finger to the enemy. Take a look at Russian Telegram trying to impute Kiev nightlife to some kind of corruption - it pisses the enemy off when he is ignored by the people he is trying to crush.

Russia indiscriminately strikes civilians while the beaches are closed, so we shouldn't open the beaches, because then Russia will indiscriminately strike civilians.

Yeah, the Battle off Samar is such insane poo poo that if they made a Hollywood movie about it, people would complain about Hollywood making up outrageous stuff that could never happen in real life*. James Hornfisher's (the same guy who wrote the excellent Neptune's Inferno) The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors goes in depth to the craziness and is a great read I would definitely recommend to anyone.

There's a scene where a Japanese plane is attempting to ram the Enterprise, when a deck engineer jumps into the rear gunner seat of a landed Dauntless and manages to shoot the Japanese plane down. People complained about that being dumb made up poo poo, which is a gross disservice to Bruno Gaido who literally did that in real life.

The Battle off Samar also involved some of the few (maybe the only? I forget) times in which there were gun duels between aircraft carriers and heavy ships such as cruisers and battleships.

It's also the only time a carrier won one of those duels, as the escort carrier USS White Plains claimed several hits on the heavy cruiser Chokai with their five inch deck gun. It was believed for a long time that one of those hits had caused the Chokai's long lance torpedoes to detonate, though when I looked this up to make sure I remembered it correctly apparently recent scholarship and the discovery of Chokai's wreck suggest that the hit that disabled it and left it stuck as the rest of the Japanese force retreated came from an aircraft bomb.

I mean honestly I would think that a military is how you say weak if it doesn't have blockade units. I mean haven't you ever heard of the United States Army using blockade units in Iraq I mean they literally had to keep the soldier from getting back on the boats

i wonder if people will try to aggressively play down their involvement this time. you can barely talk about the eastern front of WW2 without some slavering weirdo jumping out of the woodwork to yell about how unforgiveable it is that call of duty and similar games show commissars shooting soldiers, that just never happened, they just threatened arrest and enforced order just like military police in the west. actually they were a very legitimate and normal way a very legitimate and normal army operates.

now there are assloads of first-hand reports from victims of the neutype commissars and most the time they have wounds received from those psychopaths to prove it.

HMS Formidable also fires on Italian surface ships at the battle of Cape Matapan, although she's told to bugger off and leave it to the battleships early on.

Gaido and his pilot were captured by the Japanese after his plane was shot down. On 15 June 1942, Gaido and his pilot Frank O'Flaherty were weighted and thrown overboard from the Japanese destroyer Makigumo to drown after being tortured.

Around late last year, or early this year, when news of the blocking brigades started to pop up they were either saying the reports of blocking brigades are fake or playing it off as minor isolated incidents. There were some minor attempts to whitewash the OG blocking brigades in WWII as well.

What surprised me is that the reaction in the DnD thread, which is fairly pro-Ukrainian, was largely the same at the time.

Not sure how either thread thinks about it now.

HonorableTB

The blocking brigades are absolutely real and I've seen quite a few telegram videos of their work, both from videos produced by mobiks who experienced it and trying to get relief as well as from captured POWs explaining what would happen. The blocking detachments have also been recorded by Mavic 3 drone shooting down retreating Russians a few months ago in a wooded treeline.

Blocking detachments existed prior to the Soviet Union, in the tsar's days the blockers were ironically Zaproizhzhian Cossacks most of the time. Cossacks were the tsar's secret police (okhrana) and enforcers and this translated directly to ethnic Russians manning the blocking brigades in the USSR as an extension of Russian ethnic preference by the - you guessed it - primarily ethnic Russian soviet elite. Stalin was Georgian and got away with it because, well, he was Stalin. Would YOU give him poo poo for being Georgian? By contrast Khrushchev was subjected to the usual mild jabs and stereotypes attributed to Ukrainians, and it played into the decision to ultimately remove him from power and replace him with Brezhnev

This is just another form of a practice that has been in the Russian army for at least 400 years in some form
