That’s not any worse than the Buick V6 and V8 had. Theirs was more vertical, and on the front cover, but the oil pump is external. Source: had a Buick 3.8. Front dress is identical to the V8 - 300 ci all the way up to the 455. Actually, I think the 215 is the same, too. Should be - the 300 is just a larger cast iron version of the aluminum 215 (which became the Rover 3.5L V8.) Buick’s engines have been around. The 3.8L belonged to Jeep for a while.

Nissan KA24Es have an external pump too. Not sure about the DE.

yeah isn't that normal? AMC V8 has an external oil pump, ford Y-block has one, that's half the engines that i own, and all of the running ones except the bike. plus all the buick motors you see around, like darchangel said.

The more you know, I don't think I've seen an external oil pump on anything post-1930s.

Well, realistically, the SBC and LS engines are most commonly used for hot rodding purposes, and neither have an external oil pump. Neither do the Ford modular engines. Not sure about the SBF, and BBF. Mazda rotary does not have an external pump, either. edit: I don't know about "normal", but external isn't uncommon, I guess.

Not sure about the SBF, and BBF. i looked at the windsor and FE before i posted, to see if they shared any dna with the Y-block, and both of those are internal. yeah it's not the most common, but it's not weirdo abnormal stuff, was my point.

I've long wondered what would happen to the guy who stitches together a bunch of old license plates into a sheet and then uses it as their tailgate. What would the e-toll, red light or cop plate scanners do? I'd looked into license plate laws in my home state, and there's nothing in there about displaying novelty plates.. you just have to have your own on the back mounted +5" off the pavement, lit, and not swinging.

Mine is still OK, although the bit that had damage repaired all the clearcoat is peeling off, but that's on the body shop's lovely paint system. Of course I don't live in the rust belt. They only made the protege5 for three years though, so there just weren't that many to begin with.

I owned one 14 years ago, and I'm tempted to leave a note on their windshield asking them to get in touch with me if they ever want to sell it.

Heh, I like that. No law against license plates on a person... edit: one of Junkyard Digs' project cars has a bunch of old license plates used as patches on the outside of the car. I imagine that will perform a similar service.

The Door Frame posted:Is what happened to all of the protege5's? I thought a big contributor to their demise was when they perforated the already painted body to put pins in to hold the badging, and didn’t do anything to protect it. The rust would come in and rust out the back liftgate in half.
