Yup. minimum of 1500 kills and also holding one spot 25 minutes for an optional objective, but it’s “until the last Protoss falls”.

Do you think this is funny?
I liked the arcade-like quality of the next mission's premise, idk.

Also this mission blows but I thought it was cute that those drones were using an Infested Command Center as a place to drop off harvested resources!

Basically, except there isn’t some boss monster that eventually comes in to stomp all over your sandcastle, it’s just a ramping up of enemy forces until it’s effectively an endless tide of them.

It's worth noting that by the time it reaches that point, you've long since fulfilled the objectives, and you're just going for stylepoints and possibly achievements now.

absolutely, yeah. WOL before I got to these missions had me going ??? and  in various parts, but afterwards it was pretty much straight hateplaying to see just how bad it would get.

the answer for me was pretty drat bad, and I never bothered with the next two campaigns. nor have I bought a blizzard product since. so while it's unfair to blame just this specific moment for bliz literally losing a customer probably forever, there's absolutely an element of truth to it.

this whole bit is truly astonishing, in a way.

If you think it's "wasting your time", I'm guessing you just don't like the entire basic concept of the mission (totally fair, it's not everybody's cup of tea).

Because for anybody who likes the basic concept of the mission and is trying to do their best to live up to it, you're likely to last well beyond the targets for both objectives unless you're way over your head on difficulty level. The challenge isn't in simply meeting the objectives, it's seeing just how much beyond that you can go.

It is wasting my time because for significant part of the mission, I am supply capped and there is no real threat. There is unironically 10ish minutes of the mission where there is nothing to do, except wait for unit unlocks.

(might not actually be true on Brutal)

Nah it's basically true on Brutal too. Keep an eye out for Overseers and nothing will get past your walls of Dark Templar. Then all you need to do is snipe Brood Lords and keep building Photon Cannons.

Once you've met the objective, the fastest way to win is to pull all your units into your main base and destroy all your structures, then have your units attack each other. It's pretty silly.

Moebius mod tried to salvage at least some fun by giving us a possibility to do a suicide psionic nuke at the end of the mission, killing literally everything on map, us included which is at least a little bit more fun than watch zerg and hybrids killing you.

Intermission 10

Just one research upgrade this time.

>Watch news.

I... okay then?

>Talk to Tosh.

It's all gone wrong. Everything's... twisted, and there's something out there that's set to destroy us all.

Zerg... protoss. These are strong races. How terrible - how powerful - is something that plays with their fates?

>Talk to Horner.

Zeratul was looking for more clues about the end of the universe — but this time he was on Aiur.

He was trying to find out why the Overmind made the Queen of Blades in the first place.

And that's straight up wrong. Zeratul had no idea Kerrigan was relevant until Tassadar's ghost told him.

She's the one that's going to destroy the universe?

No, that's just it - I think she's the only one that can save it.

I mean c'mon, since when could they warp in guys just anywhere? I thought they needed some kinda gateway at least!

Not just anywhere, they need a pylon or another power source close by. Still, they've been working to improve their tech just like us.

>Use Armory Console.

While we hit the last mission timelock last time, we have one last upgrade timelock in the Base tab. This is yet another reason to shotgun the protoss missions as soon as they unlock, as they eat a full third of the missions needed to reach this.

And boy are they a doozy. Up first is the ability to negate burning buildings. You know, the main drawback to terran buildings? Yeah, that's gone now.

And Orbital Commands give access to both to Scanner Sweep and an ability that can call down a drone that massively boosts mineral income.

Suffice to say, both of these are priority purchases once I'm making money again.

>Examine Zerg Tank.

>Use Research Console.

For the second-last zerg research I can pick between more energy on my casters.

And regeneration on all my mech units.

Seems like a simple split, right? Do you want a more micro-heavy specialist army or do you just make a big mech deathball and steamroll the map?

Eeeeeeeeeeeexcept Bio-Steel's regen is a measly 0.6 HP per second so it's actually useless. As a point of reference: Hellions would take two and a half minutes to go from critical to full. Siege Breakers would take five minutes.

All the missions here are the same.

And we have the final protoss mission.

Quem Deus Vult Perdere, Prius Dementat.
Here's the thing...

Prophecy can be done well.

Hackneyed tropes can be done well.

Even retcons can be done well.

E.g. The Sith Lords. A lot of it is a mix of Star Wars and Planescape Torment. It retcons what was going on with Revan.

But you have to have someone who actually knows how to write. Maybe respects the material. Takes the time to actually think about the story rather than just look for the easiest way to resolve lingering plot threads.

What's frustrating about the writing is that it's lazy. It is so lazy, and awful, and inconsistent. No-one took any effort, which is a shame because as great as the gameplay of the first game was (accidentally, as I've understood it), it was the writing that made it memorable.

Y'know what it reminds me of? The Thundercats reboot. It was so bad. Characterization shifted from episode to episode. Entire episodes where nothing happens, and then episodes where the story lurches forward. I'm so glad it ended after a season, because it needed to be put out of its misery.

So my theory about the crime against humanity that is the "twist" revealed at the end of the mission is that it was salvaged from Warcraft. Take what is said but replace "Overmind" with "Lich King," "Kerrigan" with "Arthas," and "mysterious darkness imposing its power on the Overmind" with "Demons" or "Dreadlords" and you get something that actually makes sense based on the trajectory of Warcraft 3. So I'm guessing it was meant to be the big twist of Warcraft 4 but then WoW happened and it became unfeasible but they just really liked the idea of "What if the evil monster was the only hope for salvation" so they tried to just import it wholesale into StarCraft and man does it not work at all.

The problem with that idea is that they'd already put that in WoW. IIRC, the final raid of Wrath of the Lich King (which came out in 2008, while Wings of Liberty released in 2010) had you kill Arthas, only for everyone to realize that the Scourge would now run amok, causing untold devastation, so someone else puts on the helmet to become the next Lich King and attempt to withstand the (say it with me) Corruption! to try to keep all the undead on a leash. It is admittedly subtly different in that you can't just make another Kerrigan immediately so you have to not kill her in the first place, but it still smacks of being obsessed with an idea and using it over and over again, rather than "oooh, we couldn't use this idea so we'll stuff it somewhere else."

E: To say nothing about "well yeah we suck, but any other option would be way worse you guys, trust me" being something of a rallying cry for people who are so terrible even they know they're shitbirds, which considering all the stuff that came out of Acti-Blizz seems like a rather appropriate idea to be floating around there, and perhaps even mandated to be included in stories to get people used to the idea.
