armpit_enjoyer posted:Ah, "the societal value of a job is in inverse proportion to its salary" principle strikes again whenever there's a shortage of teachers (or whatever else), this discussion happens: "teachers need to feel valued, or no one will want to be a teacher" "how about increasing their salary by €400 per month?" "nah, lets instead do a pr campaign about how important teachers are" so teachers will still make poo poo, but at least there will be posters at bus stops and full page ads in national papers telling them theire very important and doing a great job and then they get fired because theyre all on short term contracts and their school got its budget decreased for having low scores because its in a minority neighborhood and none of the parents can spring for external test prep and homework coaching

there is an incredible example of this going on in the UK right now. Doctors have had a real time pay cut of roughly 35% over the last 10 years, consultants less so but still a cut. Nurses get paid less than they'd get for working in a supermarket, so there is a flood of medical professionals quitting plus early retirements etc. this gives a knock on effect of there being fewer people to train the next set of students because who wants to deal with that, but also there's a reduction in applications for some areas anyway because you come out with 100k in debt. and even better than that, there is also a finite number of places to study medicine/nursing as defined by the government and they refuse to fund more so we have increasing demand for medical professionals, reduced supply and loss of current supply, and uncompetitive wages vs other sectors. sounds like a perfect market driven problem with a market solution right? skilled labour commands a premium in the market so to maintain it you need to bring wages up to par, or increase the supply to account for attrition, or more likely both. apparently the very idea of this is hard left socialism, as is people withdrawing their labour by quitting to go work in supermarkets for more money, or striking to make a point. if it's computer touching though, this is all fine though (lol at the idea of a computer toucher strike though) bonus: the inflation used as an excuse for not raising wages is externally driven and wages in other sectors have continued to rise anyway! lol, lmao indeed Powerful Two-Hander fucked around with this message at 11:30 on Aug 14, 2023 |

The same thing is happening in Poland, combined with legal threats for doctors who induce abortions in case of life-threatening pregnancies (or those who don't report miscarriages to the police). Instead of actually addressing the big problem, our benevolent rulers have decided the best thing to do is start deregulating the medical profession by introducing "medical training" in vocational schools. For context, vocational schools are one of the three branches of secondary education in Poland. Once you're out of high school, you choose if you go to a regular high school (liceum), which prepares you for university; a technical secondary school (technikum), which prepares you for a vocational university or a polytechnic; or a vocational school, which prepares you for a specific job, like a plumber or electrician. This means that very soon, my doctor won't be someone who actually put in years of medical school, but a pimply faced youth with doubtful medical knowledge. What a world, eh?

sending people away with paracetamol is to some extent just necessary though. also just pay people to go through med school, admit everyone competent who wants to go, and then pay doctors a good but not great salary and you'd have any number of doctors you want. just to note that it is technically if not practically possible. you can reliably expect facebook to do some cool things whereby they are their usual assholes with respect to other companies. they broke the pay cartel in the valley, for example. so being a gigantic rear end in a top hat to anyone who wants to become a tech major on the back of very commoditizable llm is in character

A friend who is a big tech optimist (like, bought a Google Glass the day it came out) has been trying to move further into doing development work with the help of LLMs. Sometimes trying to get them to produce code for him, sometimes asking them questions like they're his own personal StackOverflow. He's been posting some of his results and it has greatly reinforced my sense of job security. I don't remember who said it, but "LLMs will only replace the coders who think it will be possible to replace coders with LLMs" sums it up perfectly.

the last time i was on a hiring committee we all did the mandatory DEI training to make sure our hiring decisions would not be racist there was an open discussion at the end between all the hiring committee members from various departments and the college deans. subject: "how do we retain these valuable diverse faculty members we've just spent a year acquiring, because they keep leaving" literally everyone was just like "pay them more" but this made the deans quite cross. "no, how can we make sure that they feel welcome and provide support for them, more money is not on the table" well the reason they keep leaving is because the ivies etc just poach them. every university in the country is currently having a reckoning over its faculty demographics, so everyone is trying to hire from the small pool of phds who are visible minorities. the rich universities have found that they can save a lot of effort by letting the public institutions filter out the desirable candidates, then offer them double or triple the money to move. brown university stood up an entire ethnic studies department basically overnight this way. just grabbed half a dozen young professors from state institutions all at once. but when we point this out, "we can't pay people more. how about some kind of affinity group where they can all have pizza on fridays?" sure the starting salary for an assistant prof is 30% below the low-income line in san francisco. and someone from a disadvantaged background who got a phd almost certainly has much greater financial strain in their life than the white dude whose parents paid for college. plus they might have to be supporting family back home, etc. but more money simply isn't an option aaaaaaaaaaaa Sagebrush fucked around with this message at 16:52 on Aug 14, 2023 |
