I know what’s coming, guys could you PLEASE be inventive in your excuses why you had to go to expensive schools instead of:

-community college

-apprenticing a trade

-becoming a cook

-using free online resources to learn a skill

-using a public library since credentials are bullshit

-engaging in (non military)public service for loan forgiveness

-just not going to college because you don’t want to participate in the workforce with that credential because it’s bullshit.

…and you want a real alternative yada yada and how Reagan and Neoliberalism destroyed public education since 1980 and if you only lived in Europe (meaning FRANCE not Montenegro or Bulgaria) you would go for free.

A simple solution would be to make college and trade school completely tuition free for those who want to go. But the system would rather drat people to decades of penury to maintain an underclass that is desperate enough to take whatever exploitative job they find.

“what a financial moron” I say about a person without knowing anything about their income level or investment portfolio or tax strategy.

“take your student loan payment money and dump it into the stock market, ASSET CLASSES ARE SKYROCKETING”

I applied for college when I was 16. I grew up in a military family and wasn't raised to question authority. Every adult in my life told me I should go to college, so I believed them. I hope my perspective is useful.

Agreed! If only there was somebody who proposed that and whose wife works at a Community College, kinda reminds me of someone…

Anyways it largely depends on the state.

In New Jersey, if you make less than $65k the state covers your tuition for community college and then if you want to transfer to a four year school afterwards the state will carry over that money for your 3rd and 4th years.

Current student loans and higher education in general in America is predatory, and getting debt relief for those debts is good even if some people feel slighted by it. I don't think anyone thought Biden was actually gonna do it but they lit a little fire and that gave us the crumbs we did get.

You have food loans from private lenders at 8%? poo poo, stop going to Wegmans!

Around 60% of Americans didn’t go to college.

Going out on a limb to suggest at least three (and possibly more) of those (checks notes) 200 million people were able to find gainful employment where they can buy food.

Look, pick a lane. Either a college degree is a bullshit credential where even PhD scientists are all actually bumbling morons in the real world who don’t understand basic finance OR it’s an essential credential that should be free since everyone needs it and it benefits society.

I certainly did when I was broke.

USDA says 34 million people are food insecure, that seems like a reasonable proxy for “needs to borrow or steal or get help” for food. Another 8 million live in “very food insecure” households a/k/a having sleep for dinner.

So let’s round up and say 50 million have some kind of struggle for food.

That’s a sad and shockingly large number. Out of 332 million Americans. 1 out of 6 people is a lot.

What I have learned from you all is that the solution is a check for $2000 issued three years ago and wiping your personal loans for Oberlin (which your dad forced you to attend at gunpoint).

Problem solved, if not for loving Joe Biden getting in the way.
