A month ago there was a huge row over at Bluesky because apparently some Nazi signed up and was able to just set his username to the n-word. The filters that were already in place just didn't prevent that.

There were a lot of people very angry about that, and it took way too long for the Bluesky team to respond to that.

I think it's easy to fall into a mindset of thinking you need to replace X/Twitter. Why does it need to be replaced at all? Maybe the correct thing to do is just lance it off and replace it with grass touching, or reading a book etc.

It shouldn’t need to be replaced, but if people use Threads/BlueSky as a form of harm reduction because their Twitter/X addiction is severe enough they can’t quit without an alternative, I can understand it.

Captain Hygiene posted:

Because it provided easy access to a lot of content I appreciated, and a good way to quickly get important information in things like severe weather outbreaks where standard websites can't necessarily keep up as well? It's a mix of important and merely fun stuff, sure, but I think it's kinda silly to just dismiss it and tell people they shouldn't miss it.

Not being facetious: have their been any empirical studies on how lower-latency social media has reduced the damage/mortality caused by severe weather events compared to before?

Steadiman posted:

I'll add that both BlueSky, and even Threads, users seem to be pretty pro-active in preventing the nazis to get a foot in the door and it's creating a surprisingly positive, and more importantly safe, environment for a lot of people.

They haven’t began the aggressive monetisation (enshittification) process yet. I’m not saying they are bad now, but that we have pretty good reason to assume they will be bad. Just like how in the early days of substance use, the benefits tend to outweigh the negatives.

To set the record straight here, Jack Dorsey originally established Bluesky as an internal Twitter project, it was then spun off into its own company and Jack remains on the Board of Directors. So it's safe to say he's pretty heavily involved in Bluesky even if he isn't running it.

I haven't seen that directly, but there have been studies indicating that it is a viable method for increasing public awareness and discussion in those types of events.

I'm always late to the Bluesky invites. Does anyone have one they could PM me? I used to enjoy browsing Twitter a lot in my downtime before it became overrun by just the most awful people imaginable and it seems like Bluesky is what I'm looking for.

If he does remove blocking, then that is probably the thing that actually gets me to leave. Still on the waiting list for bluesky but whatever.

EDIT: I wouldn't object to an invite, if anyone is giving them out :v:

EDIT2: Nevermind, got one from someone who I was following :v:

Has anybody on the waiting list gotten in through that, or is it just invites from other people?

Either he really believes you should be exposed to the unfiltered opinions of total assholes like himself, or maybe there was a lot of whining from chuds about getting their expose limited. But no matter what, holy poo poo what a particularly dumb move on his part. And this is a man who does nothing but makes dumb moves.

The biggest problem I have with Bluesky is that every day there seems to be an insane amount of forums drama that I can't comprehend involving long vagueposting and exhausting performative identity politics. But honestly, it keeps the Nazis out, so it's all good.

And if he does that, then it kills the site even further. If Parler, Gab, etc., have taught us anything, it's that the chuds need to have an other there for them to fight and bully. If it's just their own private circle-jerk, they get bored, and fast. Of course the chuds don't really understand this, and neither does Musk as he continues to bend over backwards for them.

That seems as pointless as the ignore list here since anyone lovely enough for me put on my ignore list immediately gets 20 replies quoting them whenever they post anyway.

Halisnacks posted:

BlueSky will become another X in the long-run because it has what alt-right chuds and Nazis want: an audience of libs and leftists to trigger. It’s not as much fun to be in a pure echo chamber compared to (thinking you’re) owning your posting enemies.

This is also part of the reason X will die; once the community becomes less ideologically diverse people will find it less entertaining. Some libs/leftists have a high threshold for tolerating an ambient level of transphobia, white supremacy, and apparently even CSAM, though, so X’s death might be a protracted one.

Because we’ve now seen this movie before, I’m not interested in joining BlueSky. Why build a habit on something fleetingly good when you know exactly how it will develop (badly).

So far people have attempted this and got zero traction, gotten bored and moved on. The culture is different on that kind of thing mainly due to the block button functioning differently. Quote dunks are not good for engagement, if you are quoting somebody I blocked I just don't see your post. If I want to check out something someone I blocked said, it's very difficult. When you block someone they go in the ether like they never existed.

So right wing provocateurs have showed up, and largely been just completely blocked and ignored, then left because they weren't having fun.
