I think my issue with it is that crabs and lobsters, even though they're basically just the spiders and cockroaches of the ocean, are big enough that you aren't expected to eat the exoskeleton. If grasshoppers grew big enough to cut open and carve out the meat, that would be a lot more palatable to me. I do not want to crunch down on wings and legs and all that poo poo. Even shrimp get peeled first.

I'm not sure I could bring myself to eat an insect, but I do find soft shell crabs delicious. Raw oysters too but that's not exactly the same thing.

I've had soft shell crab only once and taste-wise it was fine but the texture was horrendous and it's what spurred my realization that it's specifically the exoskeleton that stops me from wanting to eat insects. It's not even really looking at what's on my plate and seeing the whole dead creature. Sometimes when I'm stoned I watch Youtube videos about professional butchers carving up pork or beef or fish starting from the entire intact animal and I find those very soothing. I like knowing where my food comes from and the idea of eating something that was once alive doesn't bother me. The feeling of crunching down on a shell or exoskeleton (or even bones like with really small fish that you can eat whole) that I'm expected to chew up and swallow is just appalling though. If we're all eating crickets in the future, I'm gonna need to have them blended up or powderized or anything else that gets rid of the cronch.

The problem isn’t the idea of the whole animal in concept — look how many pages the sardine thread has — it’s the texture of the grasshopper or cricket imo. Lot more people in the US and western Europe eat escargot, which is also a whole bug(?) but a totally different texture.
I consider the texture of grasshoppers a big plus. They’re all crunchy and brittle and I would definitely have a much harder time eating them if they were all gooey on the inside.

Yes.

Also, they prefer "free added protein", not "mice".

Well, that aligns with the vibes I was getting. Which was, like, "normal" kinda vibes.
I pay for two mice and drop them into the soup arena. They have an animosity towards each other that runs deep, and once out of the cages they tear into each other. The soup is like an oil slick, coating their fur and making it difficult for either rodent to find purchase. The first scarlet drops start to color the milky liquid, a sign that the bout is nearly over. When one mouse is motionless, I pluck it out and toss it away. I only eat winners.
