Kids heal incredibly quickly from that sort of thing, but a good ortho is still worth it.

I've never done one before but my last banger that blew up was full of them - they weren't done quite right to be honest, they weren't exactly square and it made taking the head on and off really hard.

I'd like to see it done and try it myself on a less high risk application

Really glad you and yours like them so much - I have to get the Eh stickers re-made, you sold me out on those. they also came with a hangtag for your dash - before I literally would just print them on heavy card stock, cut them out manually on a paper cutter and include a piece of red thread in the envelope - They are only about the size of a biz card, so if I can find someone to make a tag style double sided card with a hole...

I just added this one

Fromm the USS US wiki article:

quote:

In 2003, Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) purchased the ship at auction from Cantor's estate, after his death. NCL's intent was to fully restore the ship to a service role in their newly announced American-flagged Hawaiian passenger service called NCL America. United States was one of the few ships eligible to enter such service because of the Passenger Service Act, which requires that any vessel engaged in domestic commerce be built and flagged in the U.S. and operated by a predominantly American crew.[45] NCL began an extensive technical review in late 2003, after which they stated that the ship was in sound condition. The cruise line cataloged over 100 boxes of the ship's blueprints.[46] In August 2004, NCL commenced feasibility studies regarding a new build-out of the vessel; and in May 2006, Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay, chairman of Malaysia-based Star Cruises (the owner of NCL), stated that United States would be coming back as the fourth ship for NCL after refurbishment.[47] Meanwhile, the Windmill Point restaurant, which had contained some of the original furniture from the ship, closed in 2007. The furniture was donated to the Mariners' Museum and Christopher Newport University, both in Newport News, Virginia.[48]

When NCL America first began operation in Hawaii, it operated the ships Pride of America, Pride of Aloha, and Pride of Hawaii, rather than United States. NCL America later withdrew Pride of Aloha and Pride of Hawaii from its Hawaiian service. In February 2009, it was reported that United States would "soon be listed for sale"

Man so close... that would have been probably the only cruise I'd ever entertain going on - to ride on a restored Blue Riband liner...

Also sucks that the original fittings were removed and sold off -

look at this rad photo...

in just looking at some "today" images of the interior, I'd imagine that that would just be astronomically expensive to rebuild.

it also came with 2 elusive Stromberg 81 carbs - just the cores of these carbs are worth about what I paid for this whole setup. one of them is complete and buildable, the other seems to be complete except butterfly flaps in the bottom section of the carb - it also seems that the bottom section is not the same as the others - its the red painted one..

anyway - theres not a lot of info about these motors out there - for instance, this intake fits, but it overhangs the block a little bit... and this hole in it is for a fuel pump and a oil fill - but this block has an oil fill tube that leads directly in to the block - different years? who knows! also the new intake doesn't have a vac port to run the advance.. so we'll figure that out.

its also a bit chewed in that area, but no biggie...

Sadly, both of these buildings are slated for demo... their back sides meet up to a cemetery, so the neighbors are quiet. Both tenants were issued a 90 day vacate order last week so the place I was going to was having a sale - this place on the other hand, the tenant is screwed.. The United States is incredible. 38 knots in trials, supposedly 42 knots once in service, which was confirmed as the design top speed when those documents were declassified. For comparison that's about the same top speed as Boeing's 929 hydrofoil ferries.

It was built with a significant chunk of government money and used the same boiler and steam turbine tech as the US fleet carriers of the time. At 240,000 horsepower it has the most powerful engines ever fitted to a civilian ship, only beaten by the aforementioned fleet carriers. The US government saw the utility of ocean liners as troop transports in WW2 and in exchange for contributing a significant chunk of the funding to the project got to dictate several design aspects they wanted in a troop ship. The United States could have moved 20,000 troops to Europe in under 5 days had the Soviets ever pushed the Fulda Gap.

Unlike the Queen Mary the United States still has her boilers and engines installed, so restoration is possible, however unlikely.

That was pretty common for a certain Era of ocean liners.

There's a few British ships that were built for the same purpose, and even had guns outfitted on them during wartime.

Mind you, they didn't work very well, but they did do a good job as troop transports.

Yeah there are some pretty great stories about some of the liners' service in war time. The Queen Mary was so fast she did all her runs unescorted because nothing could keep up with her, and the Olympic (Titanic's badass sister) killed a uboat in WW1 by ramming it.

I spend about an hour every night cleaning and working on this thing - last few days I've really been working on cleaning those carbs - I had to do the old modification trick on one to delete the choke - I'm going to take some photos tonight

the rear carb already got the treatment, but the front one is new to me, so it has to get the works - will explain later.

my neighbor is a private pilot and does a lot of cool formation flying on the weekend, he recently got some bad rear end lens and he caught me slipping out the other day

in my quest for having a collection of oddball engines, I find some oddball air cleaners as well - these are "Botteger" style air cleaners that were used on the early stovebolt powered vettes - because they are on a vette, they come with vette people, but these things look awesome on flatheads.

from a bit of research, I see that there was a guy selling these in 2017, but I haven't seen any postings after that about them. seems he made them a bit different than the originals, which look like this

so I figured.. I want to make some, slightly changed, without branding and sell them!

my philosophy for what I'm selling these days on my etsy is very simple, make stuff that I want, buy one for myself and offer more of them to other people - seems to be working ok - since I've last posted, I've been working on a few more designs for that too.

here's a look at my disjointed design process

I love that you guys love them so much - I have a few new things coming down the pipe - one I'm a tadbit worried about releasing because previous attempts at parody of the same organization have been met with some harsh stuff - but its really funny and I like it so I may have to go underground to get it to people.

I do have one more "stinker" that I'm going to release for sure tho, I just have to wait until I get the sticker version of it in my hand.

Also my wife turned me on to some fun stuff from some of her suppliers - its all dead stock 1950s gag poo poo - like the stuff you'd find in the back of a comic book, more research has to be done - I did however release the Champagne racing stickers:

https://www.etsy.com/listing/153281...p_home_active_1

I was talking to a guy that sells super high end speed parts, he let me know he has an NOS cam - an original grind by Clay Smith in the 50s specificically for these motors - they are widely known as great street/strip cams - The Clay Smith M3

so that .010 was a bit ominous to me, typically that means undersized bearings - and a possible trip to the machine shop...

- so it dawned on me that I never bothered to actually look at the cam that was in the engine - if it was stock or hot...

That says Winfield R-11-S

Winfield is a familiar name in early speed -

so in a quick conversation with the guru of the "60" this is a pretty bad rear end cam, less streetable but big power..

From what I understand - there were very few people interested in this engine as a hot street engine, it was purely racing, some of these cars didn't even have water pumps and would run them until boil over, typically in the last few minutes of a race.

mekilljoydammit
Jan 28, 2016

Me have motors that scream to 10,000rpm. Me have more cars than Pick and Pull
The cam cards don't look markedly different between the R-11-S and the M3 from where I'm sitting.

I was downtown near little Tokyo today and saw this pretty cool setup cruising around

So I dont know if you guys heard, but LA got hit with a HURRICANE and an EARTHQUAKE on the same day...

https://i.imgur.com/2UWZUpE.mp4

when the earthquake struck I had literally just walked to my kids room and saw him rocking in a hamper basket and thought he was just playing - in runs wife "DID YOU FEEL THAT" - nope...

so I made a shirt about it..

"tooken" from the shirt my dad got me from the gas station after the 94 earthquake..

(not my shirt but I had one just like it)

- anyway..

I've had so much fun the last few weeks driving the roadster almost daily that I've been neglecting my buick -

I'm still a bit gunshy about the vapor lock thing - it just wasn't getting any better so I got a phonallic spacer for the carb - no small task considering the odd nature of it, but some ebay seller literally made this one for me after I hit him up requesting the "buick pattern" "big" carter - fit perfect and for 50 bucks, cheap insurance - also note that I've been running that old glass bowl fuel filter, I thought that may be the culprit and was ready to replace it with this:

but I really dont want to get stuck again so I decided to look in to that a bit more - as with most v8's this one has an port coming from the exhaust side that goes up in to the intake manifold to heat the plenum for cold weather crap - we're in so cal - no cold weather here, but I placed that glass bowl directly above the super hot port, my friend annoyingly pointed that out to me as I was just finishing up with my spacer install

so away with it..

not pictured: a metal in-line filter in the back by the tank - will maybe test later this week, but now I'm thinking about blocking off that exhaust port for some sick HP gains - which is a fill manifold R&R and if I do that, I'm 100% going to get buck wild with teh paint and engine detail which I'm really not ready for right now, especially in this heat. Theres a guy making a set of intake manifold gaskets that blocks the plate off. I also took the time to cover the remaining fuel line in that asphalt loom stuff, used a lot on early fords, looks cool and does the job, just very obnoxious to touch and handle.

breaking out the old fitting drawer

and finally gave me the chance to use my $1 blue point double flaring tool - worked great.

hope this works...

Kiddo's leg has healed enough for him to get back on the bike

one of our favoite things to do is ride to the corner grocery store, which is an awesome 1940s neighborhood market - they hit a streak of luck and haven't been taken out yet because at some point in the 90s, it was bought by one of the employees in the butcher shop part of it, he has been there for 40 years and has made the butcher shop one of the best around, people come from far and wide, every weekend they fire up the smoker and make some of the best bbq around, we'll ride up there and get some ribs and treats and come back and eat on the front porch

my training has really paid off because he can spot them way better than I can "DAD STOP THERES AN OLD CAR IN THIS GARAGE"

in other news, I got offered this awesome light, but I'm dumb and only took a picture of the label and not the whole thing

its an awesome 20s/30s fluorescent - it is missing some fluted and frosted glass panels, but I know where to get replacements for it so we good.

got the daily a much needed detail
